Disco - The Discovery Park Dragon! 🪩

We adopted the beardie found in Discovery Park! As recommended, we have named them Disco! 🪩

Disco came home very dehydrated and malnourished. We gave them a warm bath on arrival, in which they were drinking up the water like crazy! We treated their tail and chin lump with a petsafe antiseptic and will do so everyday unless it seems to get worse (vet visit). They are currently getting used to their new enclosure after eating quite a bit of XL dubia roaches and have access to fresh greens and water, all supplemented with

calcium to help with their condition.

They already seem like a perfect addition to our petfriendly household! 💕

He might not have been dumped! People do take them out to parks or leave them in enclosures in their backyards to sun and they go from absolute motionless logs to high speed escape artists extremely fast. Even if you’re doing the right thing and have them in a harness, they can move faster than you’d think, can get spooked by how even people they know look in the sun (uv light makes humans look different outside) or by a bird and take off to hide. They also have one brain cell among the entire species and I swear try to off themselves by finding the darkest, coldest, most hidden place in any given room to go absolutely motionless in.

I mean yeah he could have been dumped, but he could also have just been lost. Neither is great but escaped beardies are also a thing.

My godfather lost a tortoise this way. It dug under the burried two by 6 that was part of its outdoor enclosure and wandered around Kenmore for like a month. He had flyers up and eventually someone found him and brought him home. He was extremely worried and upset.

I have not ever had a tortoise. No one in the neighborhood had one. I have absolutely no no idea.

I had a three toed box turtle that escaped during a summer outing in our lawn (an acre field of tall grass)

I wrote him off in the fall. Next summer, I was mowing the field and he came waddling out the tall grass looking sassy.

Samething happened with my grandpa and his two turtles. He put them in an enclosure outside so he could clean their tank and when he looked back over they were gone

Growing up we found a red eared slider in our backyard. We lived in Phoenix AZ, so finding a turtle native to Mississippi was a surprise. It lived in our bathtub til we tracked down the owner about a half mile away. It spent days in his outdoor pond in the summer. No idea how it got that far and into our backyard.

I found a softshell turtle on the sidewalk as a kid. always wondered how it got there. I didn't live near a creep k or anything. we kept it in a small tank. if I knew what I know now I would have given it a large enclosure or returned it to nature. but I was a child in the 80s and really had no say in the matter, and certainly didn't know better.

We tried walking ours once but the birds freaked him out so much that we figured the stress isn't worth the enrichment. Better to find indoor enrichment.

Yeah I used to have a beardie and I made the mistake of setting him down on the floor once, and he ran across the house and hid under the fridge before I even blinked

I have the spots we let ours roam pretty well plugged up and easy to access if we need to check behind something, and my old man beardie is mostly just lazy. And he will still bide his time patiently until he can find a way to slide down into a Situation. It’s actually kind of impressive

We let ours run around the bedroom but try to seal it up first. Sometimes he gets under the bed and is stubborn but it's not too much work to get under and pull him back out. Otherwise shoulder riding is his favorite.

I love how this little beardie’s story has brought so many people together and inspired hope. I thought it would be cool if someone made a t-shirt with Disco on it or “Hot Disco Summer” and some of the proceeds go to Seattle Humane that took him in before he was adopted. Maybe with your artwork on it? Just an idea, not sure how many people would be interested in this.

This is just for clarification, both organizations are wonderful and do great work -- from the posts in this sub it was Seattle Animal Shelter that took in Disco, not Seattle Humane. Seattle Humane only handles mammals (dogs, cats, "critters" such as guinea pigs & rabbits). Seattle Animal Shelter has a broader scope and can care for reptiles & birds. Both are fantastic resources!

Every day, it seems like a new horror pops up…and when it feels like all hope is lost…things like this happen. I saw the original post of this poor dumped/lost lil lizard…and now…this. I've been following the posts as well and knew I had to take this one in. We recently lost our lil beardie girl to severe health issues about three weeks ago, leaving an empty enclosure ready for Disco!

Fun fact….when I first moved to Seattle in 2012, my then wife and I rented a room in a big shared housing situation in South Park. The owners had an orange bearded dragon that would run around the house just doing its thing. Our Lhasa and maltipoo loved it. We did too. It was the first thing I thought of when I saw the original post. I can’t say how many ways this act of kindness touches me and I’m guessing others. Disco has won against some stacked odds and that, again, fills my heart. 2026 HOT DISCO SUMMER indeed!!!

Beardies are generally very friendly. It’s quite hard to find a mean one and their teeth are virtually useless against human skin. Dubia roaches on the other hand….
