Animals Bearded Dragon Update
The bearded dragon abandoned in Discovery park survived the night, he’s with the Seattle Animal Shelter at 15th NW and Armory. They told me he would receive care and be adopted out. The woman who took him loves beardies and told me they’d take care of him.
If he becomes available I highly recommend someone adopt him, he’s very sweet. I have him two warm baths, he likes to be handled and he turns to face you when you talk to him.

He “turns his face when you talk to him” 🥹🥹🥹
Even I’m not guaranteed to do that. Thank you for saving him. And for restoring faith in humanity. 💜

the happenstance of "discovering" him at Discovery Park is kinda neat. Maybe they name him Disco?

I’m so glad you saved him. I saw the OP and was seriously considering hopping in my car and driving up to Discovery Park, but was concerned it would be dark by the time I got there. I wasn’t sure I’d be able to find him.
I had a beardie years ago and they have a lot of personality!

Seeing the original thread made me so sad and I'm really happy to see he's doing alright. I had a bearded dragon growing up & he was such a weird sweet little baby.

He was so white yesterday poor babyyyyyyyy! You are a saint.

We honestly weren't sure he was still alive when we found him. I'm so grateful for you (and your neighbor with all the good beardie knowledge and snacks)! Thank you, thank you again.

Yes, his color was not good when you saw him, I was afraid he might be dead or close, he looks so much better today

i want to take this thread as another opportunity to remind people that the reptile rescue in downtown tacoma is open to visit for free. They are desperate for volunteers, donations, and even for people to share their mission on social media. If you wanna help guys like this little guy, keep them in mind!

Bless you, this whole scenario was able to give me a much needed positive outcome. Seeing the community rally for this little guy was very heartwarming.
You saved a life just by acting on compassion, and that's no small thing. 🫶🏼

Not sure how I ended up on the original post and now this follow up (I'm not subscribed to this subreddit or even from Seattle but I did visit a few months ago lol), but I'm grateful to have seen these posts. Thank you for rescuing this little guy, OP. Breaks my heart that someone dumped him. Years ago my gf had a beardy who I ended up taking care of because she couldn't with her depression. She took him when we broke up, and I miss him all the time.
Hope whoever adopts him gives him the home he deserves!

So happy to see this. I lost my beardie a few years ago after 12 years with him. Been thinking of getting another. They really are so personable.

u/spikedays Apr 04 '26
Thank you for rescuing this beardie and giving him a chance. Sadly, there are a lot of beardies that are purchased as babies and once they're grown, people lose interest or can't afford the cost of keeping one. Vet bills, lighting and tank setups, plus feeding them live bugs are costly.
I've rescued all 3 of my bearded dragons off Seattle Craigslist and wish I could adopt this one as well but I have no room. My first rescue will be turning 11 in October and we rescued him when he was 9 months old. If you properly take care of them, they will live an amazing long life.

u/dogwholovesscience Apr 04 '26
I got mine off craigslist too. He was purchased as a pet for a kid who lost interest. The grandparents were doing their best to take care of him. Im surprised amd glad he survived to adulthood and didnt develop MBD as so many do when purchased young. He was aggressive initially (aka nervous with people from not being handled and constantly tank bound) but eventually, with hand feeding, patience and lots of fresh veggies and insects, was easy to handle and loved being out. This post caught my eye because the dragon here looks so similar, and my guy loved crawling up and sun bathing on his stick. I had him for 11 years and was constantly surprised by how much personality he had and how smart he was as he was my first reptile. Great pets but takes lots of care and dedication for sure!

I'm really glad to see this update. Sucks that this little creature had to endure irresponsible pet ownership.
5
u/Belugha89 Apr 04 '26
He’s looking so much better! A high possibility that an owner mistakenly buried it thinking it had passed. Beardies go into a deep brumation(hibernation) and it’s highly difficult to confirm if they’re actually dead without a vet visit. It’s extremely common and recommended that you don’t burry them unless it’s confirmed for this exact reason.
2
u/calior Apr 04 '26
When our beardie was dying over the summer we had a few times where we were sure he was gone and called a cremation place to come pick him up only for him to move his head around. He finally did end up passing at the exotic vet and the vet required that he be kept there for a few days to make sure he was really gone because beardies are great at not moving.

u/Lost-Gas-416 Apr 04 '26
The beardie could have flat out escaped. some people take their beardies outside and he could have ran off. That would be quite the story for him to tell to the other beardies though. I remember i had a beardie when i was growing up and my dad and i had him outside sunbathing and he just booked it. we had to run to catch him. he almost got away. i think that may have been the last time we took him outside lmfao.
1
u/Gobbelcoque Apr 05 '26
Warm baths are a beardie's best friend. Idk what it is, but it makes them poop 100% of the time. Makes cleaning up easy. And it's funny watching them inflate so they float.
They're all such sweet things. The only one I ever met that was mean was abused so viciously that humans deserved tk get bit (someone used scissors and cut off the spines along the side of the belly. It was horrifying)
