They could never make me hate Russ

You can never make me hate anybody from that squad. Those dudes gave me and my family some of the best memories.

31

u/andrewembassy Jan 18 '26

Frankly, I feel like he lost something essential when he started to be “cool”

10

u/Shoddy-Brilliant563 Jan 19 '26

It’s sad him marrying Ciara made everyone turn on him. Because Brady went through a similar transformation when he married Giselle.

4

u/emeraldempirehd8 Jan 19 '26

Didn't golden tate bang Russell's first wife and then he forced the team to trade him? He shortly married Ciara after, but forcing a trade would create bad will.

5

u/johnnyslick Jan 19 '26

I think the issue was that Tate knew who his first wife was cheating on him with but he didn’t say anything, not that he was actually the cheater, but I could be wrong.

7

u/kfbr392_x Jan 19 '26

I believe it was Percy Harvin. I met this dude at a sports bar in the area Percy is from in Virginia. I was wearing a Hawks jersey and this dude came and sat next to me because of the jersey. He started telling me that Percy cheated with Russ's ex and he and Percy are good friends. Then he busted out his phone and had lots of pictures of them hanging out together. The pictures were not the typical fan meets celebrity selfies.

7

u/kfbr392_x Jan 19 '26

Hence the black eye. IIRC Golden Tate's wife and Russell Wilson's wife were/are good friends.

1

u/lacatro1 Jan 19 '26

It was Percy, not Golden.

1

u/West_Masterpiece9423 Jan 19 '26

That’s my wife, she says after Ciara he went downhill.

3

u/Powerful_Rub_4051 Jan 19 '26

Forever and always bro

1

u/RalfStein7 Jan 19 '26

That’s totally it! He’s our cornball!!

u/OblottenEndmills Jan 18 '26

Ngl I've been a huge Russ hater since he left, but this single tweet really helped me get over my shit a bit.

60

u/RabidBlackSquirrel Jan 18 '26

I was a hater when him being bad benefited the team (draft pick positions). Now that those picks are all settled, he's aight by me.

8

u/KlumsyNinja42 Jan 18 '26

I’m right there with you. This is the general sentiment I’ve seen with fans also.

40

u/Blametheorangejuice Jan 18 '26

He's already apparently made nice with Pete. If he hangs out with Schneider and they both seem to get along, then all will be forgiven.

3

u/Shoddy-Brilliant563 Jan 19 '26

I don’t think he’ll ever fully get along with Schneider, and I don’t think him and Pete were ever angry at each other.

47

u/goodolarchie Jan 18 '26

He ego'd his way out of the city, I think he can humble his way back in. There's no way you can dislike the guy who brought us so many accolades for long.

10

u/VegasNightSx Jan 18 '26

Schneider might be a harder lift. I remember when Wilson thought he should be involved in the draft.

2

u/West_Masterpiece9423 Jan 19 '26

Plus JS was actively pushing drafting Allen & Mahomes. Can see why that might piss off Russ.

2

u/Shoddy-Brilliant563 Jan 19 '26

I don’t think he has any more of an “ego” than most QBs. Other QBs just hide it better. Like he isn’t more arrogant than Rodgers, Brady, or most legacy QBs in my opinion. It all depends on how you look at his demands,

I’ve always looked at the Broncos trade differently. I understood why Russ would want out after years of carrying the team. Schneider and Pete had some pretty bad drafts after 2014. I think Russ just didn’t understand his strengths and weaknesses. If he was smart, he would have chosen a better situation than the Broncos. His ego perhaps made him think he could go anywhere, in any system and succeed.

1

u/Funny_Childhood1772 Jan 20 '26

The problem with the 12-14 teams, was they were a great team of good players, none, with the exception of Lynch, were game breakers on their own.  After '14, the demand by their stars  to be paid like elite game breakers, cost the team to spend the least amount of money where it was needed the most, O-line and on quality d-line backups.  Sure they did alright, still won West titles, and still won playoff games, but greed cost them an opportunity to be a team with several SB rings over their career, rather than just one.  IIRC, the only player to leave for more money and win another ring, was Bennett.

6

u/Wohn-Jayne Jan 18 '26

Same. I still wish him no professional success away from the Hawks, but this was healing.

1

u/1_aggresive_goose Jan 18 '26

Same here but I think it's too late to matter for him.

32

u/WoodDRebal Jan 18 '26

Russ almost made us hate Russ. In large part the fan base blindly followed him and thought he was perfect. 8 out of 10 of us would have picked him over Pete. The let Russ cook movement was people failing to see he had success from the coaching around him Knowing his weaknesses and elevating his strengths. Wilson's Ego was inflating and he was creating serious rifts in the locker room. The power structure wasn't working because there was two people that wanted to be in charge, One coach / one player. The best thing that ever happened to Russell to bring back some humility was being traded away and having everything fall apart around him. He knows now he isn't What makes a franchise. He can reflect how good things were. I was almost completely out on Russ, but he has found himself again the last few seasons. He's been a better teammate for everyone at Pittsburgh and in New York. He's not the player you can count on to win you games, but he is a better teammate than he's been since the old Hawaii shirt days.

4

u/Sipikay Jan 18 '26

Russ almost made us hate Russ.

Speak for yourself, please!

1

u/Shoddy-Brilliant563 Jan 19 '26

I don’t agree that he was ever a bad teammate in Seattle. I think Sherman and Baldwin were worse teammates to him.

I agree with you that Russ didn’t understand his limitations and the coaching elevating his strengths. At the same time, Russ also covered up a lot of the front office’s weaknesses. Bad drafts, bad defenses since 2017. Russ is an undersized QB, and I think Pete was the only coach willing to cater to his limitations in a way the rest of the NFL would not.

In a perfect world, NFL coaches would happily adjust to players. But we’ve seen time and again that only a few coaches in history are actually willing to do that.

The Let Russ Cook movement, in that system was real. It worked, and Russ was a top 5 QB during that time. Imagine 2018-2020 Russ on today’s Seahawks roster.

I also don’t agree that him getting humbled was the best thing to happen to him. His hall of fame trajectory is ruined, and he’s become a laughing stock. His legacy is now ruined.

While I do think he brought some of it on himself…I also think it’s also Russ being sheltered from reality. I think he genuinely has this unlimited belief in himself, and I don’t think it’s malicious. That blind belief led him to poor decisions. He went to a Broncos team with a very green rookie head coach. One of the worst rookie coaches the NFL has ever seen. There’s a universe where he accepts being traded to the Eagles, Jalen Hurts gets traded elsewhere, and we’re talking about him differently. I am happy that he’s being embraced by fans again.

7

u/RealSchwack Jan 18 '26

Maybe if he had gone to Denver and won a championship, while the Seahawks farted around in purgatory. Seeing your ex trade up like that would be hard to swallow. Considering how things played out, I'm not sure how he isn't welcomed back to Seattle with open arms.

1

u/WorkingFromHomies20 Jan 20 '26

Your turn of phrase is quite artistic.

1

u/Betdebt Jan 18 '26

I’ve BEEN on TO “that’s my quarterback” mode

1

u/Roadwarriordude Jan 19 '26

Same. I get he's kinda a weird corny guy, but he seems like a genuinely good dude and he gave Seattle the best years of his career and back to back superpower appearances with a win.

75

u/Aint_EZ_bein_AZ Jan 18 '26

Wonder how many players from that era will make the ring. 5?

157

u/emeraldempirehd8 Jan 18 '26

Wagner, Wilson, chancellor, Sherman, and lynch

53

u/copaceticzombie Jan 18 '26

The answer is everybody. I want to see Jon Ryan in the ring! I want to see Breno Giacomini!

23

u/IPuntGnomes Jan 18 '26

John Ryan. The biggest punter in the NFL lol. (Acording to Michael Robinson in the Real Rob Report)

3

54

21

5

2

u/scottygras Jan 18 '26

I do…nobody else seems to.

16

u/Sea_Finest Jan 18 '26

Fuck KJ and his anti-Semitic bullshit.

18

u/DisaTheNutless Jan 18 '26

Wow somehow I missed all that. I thought you were being dramatic at first but I looked into it and Jesus christ

39

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '26

Its overblown. He saw a black athlete being dragged through the media and he defended him when he shouldn’t had. He apologized and never said anything against Jewish people. I’m a Jew. If I can forgive him you guys probably should too. But yes, fuck KJ for joining San Francisco.

4

u/Sea_Finest Jan 18 '26

Kyrie is also an anti-Semitic piece of trash. I worked with a guy who followed that black Israelite stuff that he does and it’s a cult. They’re all people who used to be knuckleheads and need something to cling to.

1

u/1850ChoochGator Jan 18 '26

Damn, he’s one of those? That sucks

1

u/ChonkyDaBaitchucker Jan 19 '26

Cannot forget the Belly Roll - Mebane. One of the only players that survived from the Mora days to the PC/JS era.

1

u/howdyakeepemquiet Jan 18 '26

you have to include his brother -- they are inseparable.

1

u/ingle Jan 18 '26

Nah

2

u/fattsoo Jan 18 '26

Would love to hear your thoughts behind this.

1

u/ingle Jan 19 '26

Big fan of his until he flicked off Coach Pete while being carted off the field. Can’t have that.

6

u/donomatic Jan 18 '26

I don't think Sherman and Chancellor would do it without Earl Thomas.

4

u/emeraldempirehd8 Jan 18 '26

I was limiting myself to 5.

3

u/joe-joseph Jan 18 '26

MROB FOR RING OF HONOR HE’S WHY IM A FAN

3

u/Powerful_Rub_4051 Jan 19 '26

Can we have Jon Ryan too but we build a statue of him running with the ball and randomly losing it before getting destroyed?

4

u/TheWillOfFiree Jan 18 '26

I like this list. Baldwin might be the last out. Earls off the field antics make him a bad fit too

3

u/Angelripper Jan 18 '26

I just don't see how Doug doesn't make it in.

I feel like the stats are good enough, he has the intangibles, and it's a cool UDFA story.

0

u/ingle Jan 18 '26

He mimed shitting in the end zone and wiping his ass with the ball. During the Super Bowl. Wtf?

5

u/emeraldempirehd8 Jan 18 '26

It was good to see Doug last night. He was great for us, but he was never truly a wr1 in the league. He always worked hard. Way better than fuck Boi tate.

I think he (baldwin) is a bubble case.

1

u/jkillab Jan 19 '26

What’s the real criteria for ring? Baldwin locket and Bennett wouldn’t have a shot?

1

u/Diabolicat Fortuitous Bust Jan 18 '26

What about super bowl MVP Malcolm Smith? 😂

10

u/UhhUmmmWowOkayJeezUh Jan 18 '26

Tbh I think he should be in the hof still, I think the idea of playing yourself out of it is stupid, dude was great for 10ish years and has a ring. Def not inner circle/first ballot hof but if warren moon, him Kelly and fran tarkenton are in there he deserves it. I hope he gets another shot as a starter somewhere and flips things around.

Loved watching him in Seattle, dude gave us some GOAT highlights

9

u/syntaxoverbro Jan 18 '26

Some is an under statement.

26

u/chernadraw Jan 18 '26

From GOAT to GEQBUS, can't complain.

12

u/Rotorscope Jan 18 '26

Well 2nd GOAT because Darnold will win 10 super bowls straight with us.

11

u/Immediate-Tonight-31 Jan 18 '26

If Darnold wins the superbowl there is a convo to be had 14 win season best record in franchise history and a Super Bowl? Not saying it’s cut and dry but def a convo

10

u/CVBrownie Jan 18 '26

There has to be longevity. Greatest full season ever? Sure.

Trajectory suggests that this team will be in similar positions for the next few years while Sam is definitely here, but that has to come to life for sam to be considered the Seattle goat over russ.

Totally think it's possible btw, and I love russ.

2

u/Angelripper Jan 18 '26

Russ could lose #3 over time to Nick too.

Not super likely, but Nick has the talent.

1

u/ItsMetabtw Jan 18 '26

Tbf there’s an extra game now. If it ended at 16 games it would’ve been the same 13-3 record that Russ led during that Super Bowl season. It didn’t end at 16, so 14-3 is still valid, but it’s hard to compare some stats when things change over time

1

u/IllusionOf_Integrity Jan 18 '26

Wins are not a QB stat

1

u/ilickedysharks Jan 18 '26

Those are team stats lol nothing to do with Russ vs Darnold

1

u/chrisbru Jan 19 '26

GOAT runner up because Sam will have two rings by then.

1

u/GarbageBoyJr Jan 18 '26

Until The Darnold wins us two back to back

-2

As long as he is arms length from the actual team

That two point conversion in the second NFCCG will always be my favorite football play ever.

20

that game in general is one of my favorite sports memories of all time.

46

u/Marsupial_Impressive Jan 18 '26

184

u/chadillac84 Jan 18 '26

Russ putting in work so he has a home stadium after he retires 😂

45

u/Blametheorangejuice Jan 18 '26

I don't think Russ would be great at national media, but he'd make sense as a Seahawks local talking head.

25

u/goodolarchie Jan 18 '26

Please no. I don't even dislike Russ, but getting a break from his corny and religious demeanor has allowed me to heal. If he wants to do media I sure hope he can be a Greg Olsen type. Do some punditry, and then neutral color commentating. I think he'd actually be good at that, because he isn't bombastic. He's been around the league enough now not to be pigeon holed to Seattle.

4

u/Blametheorangejuice Jan 18 '26

He's kinda been bounced out of everywhere else he plays with malice, though. Seattle's the only place where he can repair his reputation.

2

u/goodolarchie Jan 19 '26

Then I'll keep it to my first two sentences.

5

u/CVBrownie Jan 18 '26

There's no way russ comes to live in Seattle. I would be shocked if he doesn't land a national job. Might not be a regular but he'll for certain be popping in somewhere.

27

u/sykemol Jan 18 '26

I love Russ, but the guy is walking cliche' machine. No way should he be near a microphone.

9

u/Shoddy-Brilliant563 Jan 19 '26

He’s shown on the Manningcast and on CBS that he can talk football normally. The press conferences are one thing but I think he’d do fine in media.

0

u/fsck_ Jan 20 '26

Yeah we thought Tom was a robot too, it seems they can loosen up after retirement.

4

u/shahi001 Jan 19 '26

he'd make sense as a Seahawks local talking head.

Absolutely fucking not LOL

"Russ what did you think about the call to go for it on 4th down last night?"

"well, first of all, all glory to god, god is great, god gives us everything. i think they should have kicked it like god told them to, all glory to god, go hawks."

45

u/Narrow_Smell1499 Jan 18 '26

I will always have ❤️ for Russ

36

u/SeattleSadBoi Jan 18 '26

I will always love Russ. I hope he comes around often when he retires

19

u/avgbowhunter Jan 18 '26

Russ is back in my good graces when he flew in last minute for Pete’s dinner after he was let go. That was a class-act move, and in my mind brings him back into the good graces of Hawks fans.

10

u/X-phenom-X Jan 18 '26

Too bad he had that thumb injury it seem to go all down hill for him from there!

18

u/syntaxoverbro Jan 18 '26

Wasn't the thumb. It was the middle finger (ligament tear, which is usually a 6 month healing process) to Aaron Danold's helmet, which completely ruined the 2021 season. Geno couldn't hold the fort down, and Russ rushed back to early.

3

u/Prisinners "I'm just here so I won't get fined" Jan 18 '26

Geno played pretty well though. If coach Carroll could coach a defense towards the end of his tenure, we would've been fine.

3

u/erik2690 Jan 18 '26

People always kinda re-write how that went down. He had 2 really bad games after coming back, but his last 7 games of the season were 15tds/3ints, 104.7 passer rating, 7.4 ypa. Really good to great numbers toward the end of the season. He just was so ridiculously good to start that season (10td/1int, 125 passer rating, 9.6ypa) before the injury that I think people remember the after injury as worse than it was.

5

u/MiniMoog Jan 18 '26

One of the funniest things that came of Russ having his best years was that the Cardinals tried to copy the formula andgot the c-tier bottom shelf version. Russ was 1:1.

11

u/Cull01 Jan 18 '26

I’ll be wearing my russ jersey loud and proud til the day i die.

23

u/joergonix Jan 18 '26

I will always think Russ is just a good dude. He just has a lot of voices around him.

Ironically enough, I think Russ and Mike would get a long really well, they both seem like they have a touch of the tism.

4

u/Chris_Bryant Jan 18 '26

I’m here as a LAC fan living in western WA, but I’m super happy for Darnold. He seems like a great guy who is finally putting it all together and playing for a great team. Awesome to see.

5

u/superstition40 Jan 18 '26

Kind of reads like a tweet we might expect out of a retired player rather than active

11

u/crone_Andre3000 Jan 18 '26

Russ wants to raise the flag.

6

u/SpookyFrog12 Jan 18 '26

Think he wants that backup job

6

If Sammy d ever goes down, the only qb I want is Mr unlimited

23

u/Twxtterrefugee Jan 18 '26

Who is raising the flag? Pete or Russ or both next week? Cmon bb

75

u/discovery999 Jan 18 '26

Gotta be Lynch. Too soon for Pete or Russ.

16

u/TroyMcClures Jan 18 '26

Lynch would be amazing

10

u/CVBrownie Jan 18 '26

I wouldn't be mad if they gave Marshawn a 5 year 20 million dollar deal to be the exclusive flag raiser.

2

u/ChonkyDaBaitchucker Jan 19 '26

“I’m only here to raise the flag so I don’t get fined…” ML

8

u/Nulgarian Jan 18 '26

It’s gotta be either Lynch or I would also love it if it was Sherman, Thomas, and Chancellor all together

The guys who were the heart and soul of our last NFC Championship appearance passing the torch to the next great Seahawks defense

0

u/discovery999 Jan 18 '26

Sherm has become too much of a SF whiner fan in my opinion.

12

u/Chance_Objective_838 Jan 18 '26

Can an active player for another team raise the flag for an opposing team?

20

u/Twxtterrefugee Jan 18 '26

If hes a starter and important player its probably a bad look. A guy who's one year deal is finished? Totally fine. No giants fan would care.

22

u/joesunga Jan 18 '26

Jody Allen.

-2

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '26

8

u/RealSchwack Jan 18 '26

It's the only one that makes sense. Jody taking over for Paul running the team means I doubt they change the tradition of Seahawks Chairman raising the flag.

11

He'll just take the opportunity to let everyone know he's still good and that he proved it against Dallas this year.

He forgets to mention that Dallas has an ATROCIOUS defense and he threw a back breaking INT to lose the game.

1

FALSE! Dallas is AMERICA’S TEAM!

5

5

3

u/Loud-Fly5078 Jan 18 '26

Russ is like the Magic Johnson of Matt Staffords

3

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '26

Would you rather start slow and end a legend, or start as a legend and die out a homer.

3

u/REDTrouttt Jan 19 '26

Russ needs to have a redemption story of his own. C'mon Vikings/Bucs in like 2-3 years, you could use that.

3

u/Knightman2022 Jan 19 '26

Russ is just hinting at his own comeback story

2

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '26

Time will heal how we feel about him like it did with Junior.

3

u/neongem Jan 18 '26

Let him raise the flag with Jody next week

2

u/badmotivator11 Jan 18 '26

Ah I really like Russ a lot. I feel like he went a little off the rails for a year or so and that made him seem less cool but he was great for us at the time. It certainly seems like his departure has been humbling for him and I hope he finds happiness and a sense of purpose with his Benin citizenship journey.

I think he’s a genuine dude but power and money can literally change your brain. I truly wish the man the best and I hope other Seattle fans can remember him fondly.

10

2

I've been a huge Russell fan - still a fan. But, what offended me was the very very short 'good-bye' tweet that seemed almost dismissive. if only had he showed a bit more appreciation for the fans would have curtailed a large part of disappointment.

2

u/Zestyclose_Cry9232 Jan 18 '26

Is it really a “comeback” for Darnold? Just because he lost in the playoffs previously?

2

u/Shoddy-Brilliant563 Jan 19 '26

I think Russ is a very misunderstood person. What many interpret in a malicious or arrogant way…would be seen as confidence and wholesome in another QB.

I’m happy that enough time has passed, and he can be embraced by the fanbase again. I never agreed with the anger some had towards him, it made sense to me that he would want to leave. But that is the past now

-1

I appreciate Russell tweeting this.. but to be honest.. I don’t care. You went out of your way to do what you did and you’ll always have a little asterix when it comes to your time here. Beating the drum to fire Pete and John after protecting you?? Like come on man. You had it good, but you let your ego and Mr. Unlimited drive the bus to your demise.

Let it go dude. Russ, is the first QB to bring the Seahawks a Superbowl win and almost a decade worth of winning seasons. Sam will be the second QB to bring the Seahawks a SB win.

Pete was getting out coached and McVay/Shanahan were beating our ass every time. So anyone beating the drum to fire Pete was on point 🤣

At least Russ has the courtesy to praise the team. Where’s Pete?

100% agree. Not sure why anyone is downvoting you. When Mr. Unlimited Interceptions ate too many Dangerwiches with the Denver Donkeys, then got fired from Applebees for being a crappy cook.. that was all she wrote. Team 3 and out, thx for the Lombardi, but peace out Team 3 and out.

Russ just wants ONE of his former teams to like him. He did this to himself, I have no sympathy for him.

We don't need that drama

u/Sea_Finest Jan 18 '26

Russ has too big an ego to mentor anyone.

1

u/SmoothJade Jan 18 '26

His work ethic is the only real thing he could help with

3

u/TDLockett Jan 18 '26

I don't think Milroe has a work ethic problem

The subtext in my head when I read Russ's post is "Even I could win with that defense!"

I’m looking forward to liking Russ again. Can already feel it starting to happen.
