Bought my first Scion Xb. 2005 112k miles $750

Bought it from auction it says run and drive and i don’t really see anything bad except rust, with fees its total is 1160 plus i will go pick it up my self which is going to be like 100 dollars in fuel.

Never own any car even similar to this and don’t know what to expect. Maybe reason i bought this is to replace it for my commute to work which is 32 miles and currently i daily a 6.7 PowerStroke f250 which gets 14 mpg and maintenance is expensive. Also never had a car that gets over 18 mpg or takes cheap gas, so pretty stocked about this.

What should i know? Maintenance advice, things to look for when i get the car, best way to deal with the rust, and any other useful info will be appreciated.

Greatly Reduced oil consumption on a 2nd gen XB by doing berrymans and switching to 5w30, is it safe to go to 0w20 for better fuel economy?

So my 2012 xb had HORRIBLE oil consumption issues where i was putting in a quart every 2 weeks or so... i finally did the berrymans flush and it has greatly reduced the oil consumption to maybe half a quart every 5000KM. I also , upon recommendation, switched to a thicker oil 5w30 because i was told the thicker oil would burn slower and help the oil consumption issues but would reduce my fuel economy a bit which it did a little more than i was hoping.

So the question is.. cuz i dont know honestly if the thicker 5w30 is helping a lot or little,. i really want to go to 0w20 go get better fuel economy. Do you guys think this is a good idea? or would switching to a thin oil like that just restart or make the oil consumption bad again where i would need to put in maybe a quart or 2 every 5000km instead of the half quart im adding every oil change how it is now?

anyone been in this situation? pls advise what worked for you and what oil you use after the berrymans.

and yes ive been using restore and protect for a good year , its pricy and tbh before the berrymans i used it for a good 3 or 4 oil change intervals and it made no difference in the amount of oil it was burning so not sure if that product works well or if my engine was just too far gone to remedy with that oil.

Anyhew,. lemme know what u guys think.

Thanks!

Back to the BOX! Advice on raising

So, in 2020, I gave my '06 xB to my niece and traded up to a RAV4 Hybrid. I never really needed a hybrid, but I liked the color. But I always missed my box.

So, I found one! 2012 xB, Stingray metallic with only 110K miles! But the only issue I ever had with my '06 was it was TOO LOW for Houston's floods and POTHOLES! It needs rear shocks anyway, so what is involved in raising it a couple of inches?

Bike roof racks?

Does anyone carry their bicycle on the roof of their xB? Are there any recommendations on specific roof racks or carriers for this purpose alone?

Just a tad more detail here.I have a 12in subwoofer and box in my " trunk" area. While yes, it is removable..I'm looking for a better solution.

That should sum it up if someone out there wants it let me know spread the word the sooner I get rid of it the better but also know if that you need doors or I guess a trunk door the rear bumper is still in good condition.

^Tho of course that’s if no one wants it and it’s gonna be sitting at the pull apart in Akron. ^

With work and my time or free time rather I don’t have enough of it to spend nurturing this car anymore.

Part of me thinks 200 bucks makes sense. None of the part of me thinks 200 bucks is the lowest ball possible because they’re going to rip it up and sell it in pieces and make probably a good grand if not more out of it but oh well.

I’ll be checking this post between today and tomorrow and getting it out of my hair, hopefully by Wednesday at the latest since we have HOA and the fam is really worried about getting a ticket or complaints for the car being on the side of the house. They’ve been really picky as of late the HOA I mean.

Post your mileage & year.

I'm curious on how high my 2012 scion xb can go. I'm at 172,527 miles right now. Doing restore and protect oil changes for the rest of it's life at 5k miles. I'm hoping to reach 300k and get the "300k high mileage club" sticker.

Curious to see which gen will last the longest.

Just bought this G1 at 220k miles, and after driving it ~40 miles, it developed lifter tick sounds. What’s the next step? Anyone who’s done the job, drop a guide or any advice. Thanks!

Just another update to my box. So far I’ve replaced both lower control arms with ball joints, all shocks and struts replaced with D2 Racing Coilovers. Progress rear sway bar. TRD Cold air intake. It turned out a little lower than I expected. My good friend Mario did the work. Also upgraded all the interior speakers and got a BeSpoke head unit. Only thing left is OEM Spoiler

Best radio replacement option

I'm in the process of buying a 2012 xB. It does not have a stock radio. It has a Pioneer single din deck. 🗑️

What is the best modern radio replacement with backup camera option?

Bad struts and alignment question

I just replaced both CV axles, lower ball joints, and hub assemblies on my 2010. Everything is driving smoothly, but the alignment is capital F fucked. So, I took my xB to Goodyear for an alignment and two or three minutes after putting the car on the lift they manager said, "We can't do it. Your car is too messed up."

They took me to the back and said one strut is so close to the body that they can't fit their hand behind it, while they can fit their hand behind the other. Then then said, "You have junk aftermarket struts. You need to take your car to a body shop and see if they can straighten them out. If not your car is done for."

The coil springs are red TRD and the struts are black. To my knowledge they are the original struts. No collisions ever showed up on the Carfax, so I think they were full of shit about the car "being done for." They refused to do the car on the lift before mine for some bullshit reason, too, so I don't really trust their opinion.

I guess idk where to go from here. I can do the struts myself as every shop around me is booked up for weeks. Is this just a bent strut issue? And if so, what replacements do I need to buy? Is there a difference between TRD and normal struts?

These cars run great and get great mileage. Just don't know what to do atp.

Should I??

OK so yesterday I saw a 2015 the plus trim so it had Bluetooth and slightly better things I guess for $2500 and then also a 2017 one for about 5000 in the final price would be 5880 after tax and fee fees and the $2500 one would be about $3000 and it is a Kia soul the red one the cheap one had about 97,000 miles on it and the more expensive one had I wanna say 117,000 I don’t quite remember but quite a bit more. The dealer kept really really trying to close the deal and sell one of those two cars monthly payments would be around 250 a month. I can’t help with feeling maybe I should go with that 2026 Toyota Prius that I’ve been eyeballing.

I have that 2008 scion XB. I’m curious if I should keep it or not so next week on Thursday anyway I have an appointment to take it to a very nice shop here in Bainbridge Ohio. It’s one of a kind great reviews. They’ve given me good prices before so for $85 they’re gonna look over the whole car should take about 30 minutes and they’ll tell me anything more that’s wrong with the car and or if it’s worth you know dumping in a bunch of money into it in the long run dumping just about $45,000 in my old scion should be OK and should net me another 7 to 8 years with this car if I baby it and treat it right. Like you know, I’m not doing donuts and snowy parking lots revving the engine more than it needs to be revved and using the E brake all the time destroying my tires because I would pick the slightly icy parking lots otherwise I would just get stuck in the snow…. The red one the 2500 car was quite a few dense and complete cashes in the body at least one gas in the back left of the bumper. The rest were just dense all over, but all in all still look better than my current scion does the outside other than the gas maybe and then at the very end mentioned oh yeah it’ll need brakes and it’ll need a ball joint fix of some kind like at that point I might as well just keep the scion especially with such a low budget right now. I would be paying interest on either car because of loan even if I had the money neither seems good enough to buy outright.

I’ll throw this little thing in there too there was a 2013 Kia soul for 3500 that looked really good not only didn’t have a screen, but it also had a backup camera which is something I’ve been wanting for a while but they kind of just went over that said that they’d have to look at what’s wrong with that one it’s been sitting there about a month. They seemed annoyed when I brought it up, so I doubt they would give me an actual overview of what’s wrong with the car or not. Not to mention it’s a dealership in Warrensville Ohio that my friend she bought a Dodge car like those small Dodge cars for about I think the same 2500 because she also didn’t have much I needed an upgrade or a car at all and that car last about a total of six months before just broke down and stopped working so by the sound of it, any car I get from there is going to be the same.

I don’t know long story short I’m gonna see what’s wrong with my scion. I know I need engine mounts. I know I need something for the exhaust whether it be the sensor or a new exhaust. I know I need brakes and maybe hopefully just the rear brakes not all around, but probably.
I thought my cruise control was done for, but I pushed a set button under by my feet by the pedals above the pedals there’s a piece of plastic that has a set button. I pushed that while I was driving, and I got my cruise control back and my cruise control is working as if it never broke and stopped working.
Which is a bigger reason as to why I kinda don’t want to let go of the scion plus it has a very nice JBL sound system put in by the previous owner and I also put my subwoofer in there and I don’t wanna move the subwoofer because that’ll be expensive and I don’t have a lot of time to do that either so I think I might as well just get it cleaned up and get the moths that are loving all of my rubber seals rip up all the carpet on the inside that’s filled with dog hair that I can’t brush or clean!!

In the end, hopefully all of this mounts up to less than $3000 on a car that I got for $1000 and have put no more than 6 to 700 in currently to date after about maybe a year.👌

God, I’m sorry for such a long message. Let me know if I should abandon the scion or if somebody else has a scion out there for 100,000 miles on it or just about for maybe 3K because I need a new scion and or just a makeover on mine I was the driver seat was more comfortable, but that can also be fixed down the line. I’m sure.

OK, so the bottomest line of possible either a new scion or clean up the one I got which of you guys think it sounds like? Because winter is coming and when it hits this year, it’s gonna hit hard is what I’ve been hearing.

oil light (2014 xB, current synthetic blend)

my oil light kept coming on when i would accelerate/brake and over bumps but it didn't come on when going very slow. miles wise, it's not due yet for an oil change but would it be ok to put a quart or 2 in there just to get me to an mechanic shop so they can do an oil change?

Hit 200k miles on the Toaster this week

2013 xB that I acquired in December 2024 with 166k on the dash. It was in good shape overall but needed some work. I've spent a little over $5k on it so far with maintenance and repairs and it's solid. Needs nothing at this time, valve cover gasket, motor mounts, brakes, transmission service... I would take this car on a coast-to-coast road trip without hesitation. Happy travels!

EDIT: Got it in Dec 2024 not 2025, so almost 2 years.

Just bought an 06 1st Gen with chameleon paint scheme. Paint was flaking on the roof and Hood, so decided to just mix my own paint. kind of a black cherry, and then threw some orange candy over top. I think it looks pretty sick. Gives it a cool kinda copper look
