A part of keeping reptiles is escaped feeders and I should have figured that part of keeping carnivorous plants would mean they don’t stay escaped for long. This cricket was a monster and I’m kind of worried for this trap. Legitimate concern?

I don’t usually have many flies in my house. I get a lot of small moths when someone opens the door to go in or out during the warmer months. I have bright lighting everywhere because I keep LOTS of plants and animals and the VFT usually end up getting those. I recently got into carnivorous plants to take care of fungus gnats mainly, but ended up grabbing a very healthy VFT at Trader Joe’s. I added it to my bog and it’s done well. I discovered a very small cricket had been thrown in with my large ones for my Beardie so I pulled down my bog from its top shelf to potentially give it to my VFT, if I saw it wasn’t currently working on any other bugs. To my surprise, this MONSTER of a cricket who is already long gone, was “staring” at me, stuck inside of a trap. I’m incredibly impressed that this trap managed this but also, a little concerned. I’ve read that they’re only supposed to be given bugs 1/2-3/4 the size of the trap. Will they be alright?

Cephalotus “Behemoth”… 2x Drosera Hercules, 2 Stylidium Debile, and of course, a phat sack of Nutricote 360… looking fantastic after a 3,000 mile journey to CA. Stoked on the Behemoth as my other one has been on the struggle bus after my house sitter nearly killed my other one. Fun fact: Stylidium Debile (trigger plant) is a “protocarnivorous” plant… sometimes it murders… sometimes, it doesn’t.

When do they start to get bigger?

Back in, I want to say springtime, I decided to dip my toes into Helios. And while I can say it has put on new growth, it’s really only spread, and grown more pitchers. I’ve seen pics online that are usually only one ~three ish pitchers but they’re way way bigger.

My guess is that I didn’t do enough research and picked something that stays tiny, but then again I don’t know hence why I’m asking here.

So if my particular variety can get big, what’s the estimated time for it growing bigger pitchers?

Made a huge mess of it after repotting.. just spend almost 45 minutes meticulously cleaning the dirt of the plants with a q-tip 😅 Never reported a plant in my life. Quite happy with the results 😍

Should I empty out my sarracenia purpurea’s pitchers for fridge dormancy?

This is my second year having her, and this summer I let her grow outside where she caught tons of wasps! It’s October in Canada now and I don’t trust the winter frost so she’ll be fridged again.

But last year she mainly had fruit flies which digested fairly quickly. Now, I still see a ton of wasp gunk in her traps. Most guides recommend trimming dead pitchers but i don’t see posts on this sub about emptying full pitchers prior to fridge dormancy.

Is it safe for me to empty her pitchers, before wrapping her up in sphagnum, and spraying sulfur on her like normal?

Thanks!

Question with un-inflating pitcher buds

So currently ive had an open leaf for weeks, now theres 2 leaves, and both arent even starting to inflate the lil nubs. The plant always gets ideal humidity and gets a good duration and strength of growlight. did some research on what to do about this on Reddit and i saw people recommending spraying the nubs with distilled water. Just wanting to know if thats effective or not.

If it is, i would like to know how many times a day must i spray the nubs, and until when must i keep doing this? (till the nubs start inflating?)

(If it helps, the plant is a Nepenthes viking x veitchii)

Hello, I've seen some comments here and there saying these shouldn't be kept in water non stop.

However, mine has been in almost constant water all summer and even during September and I swear it's doubled in size.

It also stays on a NW windowsill where it gets mostly afternoon sun.

I live in western Europe so it's been a hot summer but humidity has been pretty high since August (as usual really).

The photos are 3 months apart.

I'd love to hear your opinions on this.

Venus Flytrap

I have three Vfts that are growing and doing well. I really don't want them to go into dormancy, but I know I need to do it. I also have a small one I saved from the death box from Home Depot. It's perking up already by giving it a lot of light. Could I focus on its growth and not let it go dormant this year?

I noticed this brownish spot on the second to top leaf on my ventrata, I'm not sure what it means, if it's normal or anything I need to be worried about?

A few weeks ago I posted about swapping seeds. I'm fortunate to report it was both a fun and fruitful endeavor.

I just wanted to share the results of it as well as my little collection.

Here's my little germination & acclimation station and bug biting friends.
