Aus / NZ Finding first WHS / OHS / HSE job or work experience (AUSTRALIA)

Hi all,

I have just finished my Grad Dip. in OHS but lack any formal work experience in this area.

What kind of jobs aside from the few internships on offer do you recommend for getting a foot in the door for someone with no experience on the tools or in a safety related role?

Genuine advice only please.

Thanks.

This outlet looked crooked to me. I'm out of town performing a safety assessment for a client. Can't wait to tell the front desk tomorrow that their contractor (presumably) didn't ground their entire floor of rooms' electrical outlets. Maybe I'll send them an invoice. Lol

Thought you'd all appreciate it!

USA Made a deck for my cousin before she starts college because of what came out in the Cornell case last month

If you haven't followed it, a cornell student says she was drugged and raped by seven frat members at a party in 2024. She went to campus police and the county DA and nothing happened for two years

It took her filing a lawsuit last month for the governor to step in and hand the case to the state attorney general. Cornell's own survey says 11% of their students have experienced nonconsensual sexual contact.

My cousin starts there next fall. I didn't want to just tell her to be careful, because everyone says that and it means nothing. So i wrote down the actual signals she can use if she's in trouble. The angel shot order at a bar, asking for angela, the hand signal that works through a window, the phone tricks that call for help without unlocking it, and what to do in the first 24 hours if something happens because the evidence window is shorter than most people think

USA KPI’s

Aside from the typical lagging/RIR/DART/LTIR, what does the group find are effective leading indicator KPI’s? If you have some, how did you end up selecting those? How did you establish your benchmark/goal? How many KPI’s do you track? How often do you share them with? Who do you share them with?

USA Where can I find a hazard communication written plan ?

OSHA requires a written HazCom program. I've looked at templates from OSHA's website, industry associations, and consulting firms. They read like legal documents. Pages of regulatorydefinitions, and cross-references to other standards. I need a written plan that my staff can read and understand, , and that describes how our facility manages chemical hazards in practice. Not a legal compliance document that sits in a binder and gets pulled out only during audits. Has anyone written a plain-language HazCom program that's both OSHA compliant and usable ?

USA working in utility safety?

I rarely see posts about certs like cusp on here, is utility safety just super niche? What are the hours and travel like? Is it a lot of on call work?

It seems like a cool career and the pay on utility safety jobs in my area is extremely good.

Just wanting to hear from people in that area

USA safety managers and data centers

After this data center boom. all these massive hourly wage boom. do you think it will stay high? or do you think it'll regress and adjust back to a slower market? lots of folks on data centers making 45-70 an hour. 70 seems crazy high for an onsite person.

USA Thoughts on "days since last recordable" signs?

USA Certificate Options

I’m currently attending Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) online to get my master’s degree in Safety, Security, and Emergency Management and wanted to get the opinion on which certificate would be better. I’m considering the Occupational Safety certificate, which comes with GSP designation or Safety Leadership and Management. Just wanted to get thoughts on this. Thanks!

EU / UK Advice for getting into the industry

Hello,

(UK) Im looking for any advice on how you would approach getting into the industry of health and safety. I have experience that I can leverage, such as being in the Armed Forces, studying physiotherapy at university, and having leadership roles within volunteer communities.

I have researched about completing an NEBOSH NGC, but I wanted to hear from professionals within the field about any advice on which they wish they had before they started.

Any fields you would encourage for a new professional, or conversely, stay away from? Any additional qualifications you would actively seek out, ect.

I would greatly appreciate the feedback!

USA I had a debate today over proper footwear because there was an apparent loophole.

Today, I was on site doing my usual rounds when something caught my eye. A female worker was installing panels with two other employees. Every time she walked, the bottom of her pant leg would ride up a little, and I could see black fabric, it was her sock

When I went over to speak with her, I discovered she was wearing steel toe, backless shoes that looked similar to Crocs. I'd personally never seen steel toe shoes like that before, so I didn't even know they existed.

I explained to her that she needed to wear proper footwear. Technically, she did have steel toes, but the shoes didn't completely cover her feet, and I was concerned they could slip off while she was working.

She disagreed and insisted her footwear was acceptable. Another safety person and I tried explaining our concerns, but she pointed to the employee handbook, which specifically stated that employees had to wear "steel toe footwear."

She wasn't entirely wrong about what the handbook said, but the problem was that it didn't specifically address backless steel-toe shoes.

Eventually, we had to bring in the Safety Manager to make the final call. His ruling was that she had to change her shoes because they could slip off while she was working.

I've dealt with plenty of safety disagreements, but this was a first for me.

Other The LinkedIn of it all

I guess this applies to professionals all over the world. There’s no real meaning to the post other than a small rant really. I’m just perplexed by LinkedIn. I find Reddit SO much better and I find myself wondering why. My feed is just full of “I’m up for an award - I’m the best safety expert in the world” or “here’s what EVERYONE is doing wrong 24/7 on ALL sites” “I met a leader today who lacked the true skills of being a leader and here’s why”.

Come over to Reddit and you get real stories, real comments, real humans not afraid of telling the truth. Not afraid of saying they messed up and not needing to turn it into an inspirational story.

But then I guess Reddit isn’t going to get the consultancy leads or build real working connections.

Or do those connections actually turn into real job prospects anyway? I don’t know. I’m just ranting away to be completely honest after a quick scroll.

I think it’s because Reddit is anon to a degree whereas LinkedIn shows a lot of personal info. Everyone is trying to one up each other constantly or show that they’re the best. Reddit feels way more supportive.

Am I alone in these thoughts and maybe I just need to change my algorithm? 😅

USA First Aid/Fire Safety Service Recommendations

I’m an EHS engineer for a small company (<100 people) and relatively new in the role. We have been using Thompson Safety for our first aid/fire services but are looking to maybe change vendors due to some communication and invoicing issues. Currently we are considering Cintas and I’ve met with their sales, training, and fire service reps a couple of times and liked what they are offering. Pricing between Thompson and Cintas seems to be similar with Cintas being a little cheaper overall. However, I’ve seen some online reviews about Cintas overcharging and having poor communication after the contract is signed. Also, it seems like quality of service depends on the branch assigned to the business. Does anyone have any insight to either of these companies? The decision has been left to me and I just don’t want to put our company in a poorer position than we already are.

Also, I understand Cintas is a multi-conglomerate business and this also raises a little concern with communication. Any info is much appreciated! I’m open to other recommendations, we are located in AZ.

USA Changing Work

Hey everyone- i need advice on where to go work.
I have been a safety professional for 3 years, work at a big GC in the DMV region. The work hours and expectations are not very fitting (10+ hours daily, weekend work every 4-5 weeks, late stay 2x a week).
Overall, i want to move elsewhere with less workday hours and those unpaid late stays + weekend work.

Has anyone had experience with any other company/GC with a better work-life balance as a Safety Professional?

Also, if not in the construction field, where else did others pivot to? Thanks everyone.

USA Agentic AI Use in the ESH Field

Agentic AI is a hot topic in my workplace and i was wondering if anyone here has found any ESH applications for it? I’ve tried to dabble in it but our IT is still approving integrations with our internal systems so i can’t do much at the moment.

Feels like a space that could be used to help streamline the paperwork heavy portions of our jobs but curious if anyone else has had any positive uses for it.
