Will Smith has baseball in his blood. His mom's family are the Comiskey's, the founders of the Chicago White Sox.
15
u/InformalProtection74 Aug 29 '26
Smith's mom also worked for the Jordan Bulls. And Rick Celebrini works for the Warriors. Steve Nash is "Uncle Steve" to Macklin.

Will Smith. He pitched for us 10 years ago.

AND he played catcher for the Bums

u/AcceptableTypewriter Aug 29 '26
And he slapped Chris Rock at the Oscars.

He got in one little fight and his ma got scared

She said you’re moving with your auntie and uncle to Bel Air. So he became a catcher for the bums

Same guy that slapped Chris rock at the Oscar’s if I remember correctly

The guy on the left is Macklin Celebrini who, in his two years of professional hockey, has already established himself as one of the best centers in the league. (On a team with numerous flaws!)
The guy on the right is Will Smith and on any other team he’d be praised as an incredible playmaker and one of the best young talents in the league. He’s obviously overshadowed by Celebrini who is looking like he might be a true generational star.
If you want to join the bandwagon, there’s always room!

I want to get on the bandwagon, but I don't know how to start? My dad always watched baseball so I grew up as a giants fan, but I'm realizing that I literally do not know how to even start getting into another sport

u/byfuryattheheart Aug 29 '26
All you need to know for now is that the Sharks have been in the dumpster for the last 7 years. But during that time we drafted extremely well and got a generational first overall pick in Macklin Celebrini.
He stepped straight into the NHL at 18 and absolutely exploded. In his second season, at 19, he broke the Sharks regular season scoring record… He was one of if not THE best player at the Olympics this year. I have watched this team my pretty much my entire life and existence of this team, and we have never seen anything remotely close to the level of player Celebrini is. It’s incredible.
We’ve also drafted two second overall picks in the last three year along with Mack.
We still need a couple of seasons to really start to peak, but the Sharks have one of the brightest futures in the NHL. The future is teal.
10
u/InformalProtection74 Aug 29 '26
I always explain the Sharks like this to friends.
Imagine your favorite team going through a rebuild, getting a generational talent, top end prospects, and becoming a true contender.
And then double that and you have what the Sharks are building.

[r/sanjosesharks](r/sanjosesharks) come join us! Also there are some videos on YouTube that walk you through rules of the game. The hockey guy on YouTube is a good place to start. Check his playlist. Also [r/hockey](r/hockey) for general league wide news.

Buy a ticket to a game. Live hockey is seriously the best. Get there early and watch warm ups right on the glass. SAP Center is undergoing some renovations over the next several years to make it even better. It was built for hockey. Not a bad seat in the house.
That’s how I got into Sharks hockey back in 2008 as a broke freshman at SJSU. Bought the cheapest ticket on some random day of the week.
I don’t live in the Bay Area anymore and still make the trek several times a year to see my team. So looking forward to seeing how this season goes…hopefully playoffs for the first time since 2019.

u/2BlueZebras Aug 29 '26
100% this. My dad watched hockey since I was born but I was never into it. Then I went to a game in person in my 20's and that changed. The atmosphere is fantastic.

Things you should know:
• There are 33 days until the Sharks' opening day on October 1.
• The Sharks have been terrible and rebuilding for the last roughly 5 years.
• In that time as one of the league's perennial basement dwellers, we have amassed a huge core of exceptional young talent and an extremely deep prospect pool. We have the deepest bench in the league, by a lot.
• This will be our first season coming out of the basement and seriously attempting to make the playoffs. A playoff berth and hopefully a couple postseason wins will be considered a success.
• if the plan works out, we could be contending for the organization's first Stanley Cup in just a couple of years.
• Now is the time to get on the bandwagon. Everyone is welcome.
• It's okay if you can't see the puck. No one can. Watch the players. You'll figure out where the puck is by watching them in the same way that you see where a fly ball is going by watching the outfielders.

u/teal_all_over Hogs Out! Aug 29 '26
Just start watching games when the season starts in October. Maybe find a quick YouTube video of the rules. I'm also a baseball fan first but got into the sharks a few years ago.
After you've endured the 2026 San Francisco Giants you deserve a fun team 😅

u/anonsharksfan 8 Pence Aug 29 '26
Just take Caltrain to Diridon and watch a game this season. You'll fall in love

u/NorCalAthlete Aug 29 '26
- Join [r/sanjosesharks](r/sanjosesharks)
- Season starts in about a month
- If you’re in the area go down to San Jose and grab a beer / bite to eat at Stanley’s (restaurant above the sharks ice practice facility) and watch all the skaters practicing / maybe learn to ice skate
- Start looking now into how you can watch the games once the season starts for whatever internet / cable / streaming package you use
- Go to a game - nosebleed seats are very different in the Shark Tank vs giants stadium - you’re closer to the action, it’s enclosed so it’s louder, and when the goal horn sounds you feel it in your bones.

All great advice below. DM with any questions. We took our daughter to her first game last season and she’s obsessed. She can’t wait for the new season to start.

u/Bonnieearnold Aug 29 '26
It is a little like running next to a train and trying to jump on. People have offered great advice but you need a hockey friend. DM me. We’ll be friends and you can ask me all the questions. It’s super helpful when you are like “why did that happen?” happens. :)

Just watch it, root for the team, do some research on the rules, top players, and some history of the sport if you want. Really you just need to watch
1
u/No-Nothing3308 Aug 29 '26
There is a lot of content in YouTube including recent games (last season) and older stuff if you want to know broader franchise history. People like Brodie Brazil do a lot of good informational content, you can browse the Reddit, look into draft stuff, and if you’re wanting to learn more about the sport of hockey there’s tons of stuff online too. Don’t feel overwhelmed, get into it at your own pace. The season (for the Sharks) starts on October 1st or September 20th for preseason so you got time.
1
u/MyOuttie Aug 29 '26
There are a lot of Sharks games on YouTube from this past season if you look. It’s a good place to start before the season starts again in a month
1
u/Onepetiteorange Aug 29 '26
Come to a game when the season starts! The Sharks play at the SAP center (aka the Shark Tank) which is right off the Caltrain at Diridon station in San Jose. Taking the train is great, plus you can grab a couple drinks in downtown after!
4
u/BigD_277 22 Clark Aug 29 '26
They also signed Eric Pohlkamp, the best scoring defenseman in college last year after drafting him in 2023.

u/jambajew42 Aug 29 '26
Though there's a very strong chance he won't play for them but rather the minor league team (also in San Jose, the Barracuda) this year.

Niners are old and already can’t stay healthy. They’re moving in the complete opposite direction as the Sharks.

You're joking, right? They literally have a top quarterback that's going to be there for years.

Actually current best athletes. Also one of them the future best hockey player in the world

I don’t think he was the captain of the Olympic team.
2
u/Quetzythejedi Aug 29 '26
You're right I confused it with the 2026 IIHF World Championship where he was captain.
But it's only a matter of time. I'm assuming McDavid has two more Olympics in him then it's the kid.
1
u/Numerous_Style_3899 Aug 29 '26
McDavid wasnt the captain either lol. It was Sid the kid! Forever young
1
u/Quetzythejedi Aug 29 '26
I know he was assistant but my thought was that Crosby will hand it to McDavid and he will do two Olympics as captain.
1
u/Numerous_Style_3899 Aug 29 '26
Yea Im sure he will be captain at some point, if he doesnt retire before Crosby lol

Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith both play for the San Jose Sharks, both great young players and most likely future hall of famers
2
u/nagokart 47 Beck Aug 29 '26
The kid on the left is Rick Celebrini’s son, Macklin. Kid on the right is Will Smith. Not to be confused with the Fresh Prince of Bel Air. Both play for the San Jose Sharks of the National Hockey League.

Formally inviting anyone who wants to to get Sharkspilled this year. Pivotal season coming up in terms of future progress and a perfect time to get into it.

Macklin Celebrini and Will smith!
Celebrini was the #1 overall pick and was 4th in MVP voting in his 2nd year in the league (this year)… at AGE 19. Also, his dad is the Director of Sports and Medicine for the Warriors since 2018
Will Smith played at Boston College and Celebrini went to Boston University. They were college rivals and now play together on the Sharks and they’re besties, literally together all the time. He was the #4 pick also

Macklin Celebrini (L) and Will Smith (R). San Jose Sharks (and best friends).
Macklin is one of the best hockey players in the world (not an exaggeration) at 20 years old.
Edit to add: if any bay area baseball folks have ever considered getting into hockey, now is a great time to do it. The Sharks are young and exciting to watch. Go check out a game!!
