How I made my s2k drive 10x better for FREE
I’m going to start this post off by saying I don’t know the implications of this “mod” if there are any. Do at your own risk.
From every review I’ve seen on the s2000 and its driving dynamics it seems to only fall short in one metric, that being steering feel. The EPS system is dated and especially in higher mileage cars like mine, they tend to wear out, over-assist or become inconsistent in terms of steering feel and weight. For a long time I assumed this “floatyness” was due to worn and old suspension components. I put better coilovers on the car and replaced the tie rods to hopefully get some of the slop I was feeling out of the steering but neither did much of anything for the steering feel of the car.
In my research for how to test EPS issues a found a thread from a few years ago suggesting removal of the EPS fuse to test the car’s steering unassisted. What I didn’t expect was for the car to feel so damn good without power steering! The weight is perfect, the feel is perfect, and the stability of the car at speed is fantastic! It’s completely changed my perspective on driving this car and genuinely makes ripping on backroads 10 times more fun and engaging.
As far as drivability goes, it’s only ever an issue when you’re parking the car. You have to fight the wheel a bit especially since I’m running a larger 235 front tire. At speed though, it feels just fine. You feel the steering load up in corners, weight come off the front end under acceleration, and every detail you’d want to have communicated to you through the wheel.
I suggest anyone who feels the EPS in these cars falls short of the rest of the performance to give removing the fuse a shot at least once and see what you think because it was a serious game changer for me.
I will say I haven’t done any research on potential side effects of running the car without the EPS functional. I have a permanent EPS light on the dash and am not sure if there will be any damage to the components of the system by running it without power. If there are people in here who are running manual racks or have suggestions on how to continue running the car without power steering without breaking things, please let me know!
As far as removal goes, the fuse box/owners manual tells you which one to remove and just requires a Philip’s head screw driver. It took me less than a minute.
