it was the chain grabbing
whats b? special? i now tried the same against bots and it works with the regular throw (the one where you grab the opponent and press grab again)
You predict if they will normal pummel or special pummel by hitting attack or special. If you hit the same one as them, it cancels the grab and you get out.
It doesn't work if they don't land the pummel. Pummel removes throw protection and is explicitly required to do chain grabs. If there's no pummel, you get throw protection after being thrown and they can't re-grab you.
also you can DI the throw. So if the Clairen is throwing forward all the time, hold away and down from the Clairen, then when you're thrown you'll be further away and have a chance to tech.
I can tell by the way you’re popping up from the throw that you aren’t DI’ing down and away. You have to already be holding that direction when she throws you.
press or hold the button you use for your special moves. Whenever the pummel does something "special" (Like clairen's taser or zetterburn's lighter) that's the button you hold to break out.
If they just throw you without pummling, you will glow yellow. That window is the duration in which you can't get regrabbed.
aside from playing the guessing game of hitting attack or special to break their pummel, you can also press grab as they grab you and that'll do an immediate break.
even experienced players don't think to break grabs/pummels though, so don't feel bad. it takes some anticipation and most people are busy thinking about playing neutral. however,
in this case, where you're getting chained grabbed and it's clear the clairen is going for grab then special pummel, it should be on your mind to play that grab break guessing game
As others explained when your opponents pummels you get to press either 'special' or 'attack' to get out of the grab. Overall its a fun addition but the strength of some special pommels make it a spammed move online that can be hard to get out of even when you know its comming so in some matches yeah... you'll have to spam special whenever you get grabbed because trying to guess between special and normal pummel will sometimes get you the bad ending and it'll cost a stock most times. I'm thinking of Clairen, Zetter, Olympia, Galvan, Maypul mostly. Once again, to me its only a problem in online play with ppl spamming due to how easy it can be to get a grab sometimes (a missed imput, a laggy game, a poorly spaced move etc etc)
People have answered the chain grab stuff, but for recovering you really gotta not use jump or air dodge and instead side special into the wall and use your wall cling, wall jump, and double jump to either safely get to ledge or be aggressive with a back air or side special. Recovering above the ledge every time using all your off stage resources is very risky and will be bad more than it will be good.
For one, don't let them hit the same pummel repeatedly. General rule of thumb is to just hold special any time you are grabbed, as most characters benefit more from it than standard pummel.
For two, this game, unlike the first, has a ledge. You gotta use it, as the game was built with it in mind. It gives you invincibility, numerous options, and for Maypul specifically, a whole new buddy!a
People have been telling you to hit the special button, but there is something else people forget; you can actually HOLD the special button (or attack button for regular pummels) instead of just pressing it; it makes it work better sometimes, see what works for you.
This and some other interactions that exist are what made me lose interest in playing this game competitively. I don’t understand why this is even an interaction the devs chose for us to have in the first place.
i also do hate grabs, ledges, and shields.
dodge and parry is more than enough, but instead of parry's stun, i'd prefer sth like clairen's dspecial, without the circle.
also, i dont think adding; projectiles you need to aim/16 directional dashes/projectiles that give knockback or hitstun even (no correlation, just annoying), to the best platfighter that happens to be on computers instead of consoles, is not a good idea. "veterans of the genre" takes you this far at most. maybe make your own rules accordingly to the market you are in instead of catering for existing players of the genre no?
felt competely unplayable with keyboard for a long while.
imagine this
no grabs/shields/ledges like the first game
getting parried knockbacks you instead of stunning you
no projectiles with hitstun/knockback
to fastfall you need to press down twice
no hyperborean harbor and la reina
in a roa1 re-release instead of a seperate game, what were they thinking while dividing the playerbase? yes old players pay again, but more active players mean more visibility, and more visibility means more growth no?
_did they even aim for growth? considering it's released on pc, most people who own a pc doesnt own a controller, and the game is designed to be played with a controller, it seems more like they want the existing sparse platfighter audience and supply server costs with cosmetics_
There’s a lot here to respond to, but I agree to most of this.
I feel like you’re anlayzing the game from a business perspective and I think that’s the way they need to move towards before (and I hate saying this, this way) it’s too late.
yea, after you have absa, mollo, other chars a basic rework cant fix what makes them insufferable to play or play against with a keyboard, you cant unfuck the thanksgiving turkey and remove them, and no community will like full reworks. second game makes those even worse
so basically in other words u dont understand the game and as a result are bad at it and now complain about it. so now u lost interest. k. its genuinely as simple as pressing b when grabbed and holding ur stick away for DI

The chain-grabbing? B when grabbed to counter the special pummel.
The edgeguarding? Go to ledge or wall instead of stage.
