Cheapest accommodation in Reykjavík for a Palestinian Erasmus student on €900/month?

Hi everyone!

I’m a student from Palestine, and I’ve been selected for an Erasmus exchange at the University of Iceland in Reykjavík. My scholarship is €900 per month, and I’m trying to figure out how I can afford to live there.

I’ve been looking into accommodation, but the prices seem really expensive compared to my budget. Paying 150,000 ISK per month for a dorm would already take up a huge part of my scholarship, and I still need money for food, transportation, and other basic expenses.

Does anyone know of any cheaper accommodation options for students? I’m open to pretty much anything, including shared apartments, rooms in someone’s home, cheaper student housing, or living outside Reykjavík if transportation is manageable.

I’d really appreciate any advice, personal experiences, or suggestions for websites and groups where I could find affordable accommodation.

Thanks a lot for your help!

Self Care Wash - Reykjavik to Keflavik?

Thumbnail
0 Upvotes

Does anyone know of an N1 (or Olís/Orkan) station between Reykjavík and the airport, ideally in Keflavík/Reykjanesbær, with a free self-service wash area (hose + brush)? Is it really free to use, and is there anything I should know about how to use it?
Thanks in advance!

Does anyone need a house sitter in October?

Hi!
My name is Maggie and I am an 25 yo American who will be in Reykjavík for a solo trip in mid October. I figure it’s a long shot, but does anyone need a house sitter when? I would be happy to do household chores and whatever is needed to keep the property looking it’s best. I can send a cleared background check and past employment resume, along with character statements if need be! if you are interested, message me! :)

WIXAPOL - Poland’s wildest rave is coming to Reykjavík

Poles now make up almost 6% of Iceland’s population, and with them come new cultural trends from back home. One of them is WIXAPOL, a Polish rave collective which revolutionized underground club culture, bridging the history of rave with contemporary hardcore, gabber, techno and hard techno.
Known for their energy, humour and memetic language, WIXAPOL mixes European and Polish cultural references, samples and quotes into their unique aesthetics. Just as important is the community and subculture around it, built on radical acceptance, diversity and queer-friendly spirit.

“Humor and jokes are a Polish specialty, especially in complicated moments of history,“ „We are enemies of the religious boredom they want to serve us. This is hard music for hard times.”

Their sound has travelled far beyond Poland, with performances at Berghain in Berlin, in NYC, Beijing, Shanghai and Mexico, as well as an appearance on Boiler Room. And this Saturday, Sept 12th, they’re coming for second time to Reykjavík to perform at Iðnó.

Whether you’re curious about what younger clubgoers in Poland and Europe are into, or you’re Polish and missing the party scene back home, it’s a chance to experience something different and have a proper rave.

I hope you're okay

Yesterday afternoon in central Reykjavík, a passerby and I helped someone who had collapsed and seemed to be in some kind of medical trouble. Emergency services were there fast and sent us on our way. I won't say more out of respect for their privacy, but wherever you are, I hope you're okay!

Vegans in Iceland - where do you buy products

Hi everyone! 😊
I’ve lived in mainland Europe my whole life, so I’m used to having a pretty wide variety of vegan products available in supermarkets. Since moving to Reykjavík, I’ve found the selection a bit more limited than I expected.
I’m mainly looking for vegan ingredients and protein sources to cook with myself not ready-made meals. Things like soy chunks/TVP, different types of tofu, seitan, tempeh, vegan skyr, dried or shelf-stable protein products, and similar basics.
Some supermarkets seem to have very few options, and often I can only find one type of tofu (which I unfortunately don’t like 😅).
Does anyone know of a good online shop that delivers to Iceland where I could order this kind of stuff? Or maybe a local shop in Reykjavík with a bigger selection of vegan cooking ingredients? I have basically already visited every Kronan / Bonus / Hagkaup in the Reykjavik area.

Would really appreciate any recommendations! 🌱

Just got back family trip with teens - best bits

Just got back from 4 days in Reykjavik.
Brilliant trip - everyone loved it. We’re a family of 5 with older teens. Wanted active days & also we are all big foodies.

Here’s my best bits:
We didn’t rent a car - did organised trips.

Day 1 - arrive & sky lagoon .. 10/10 for sky lagoon - we absolutely loved it

Day 2 - day trip in small group with a company called EastWest. Very well organised. Visited Vik, black sand beach & the main waterfalls. Our guide was a bit annoying - but the trip was amazing.

Day 3 - inside the volcano trip. One off experience - super pricey but really memorable … highly reccomend.

Day 4 - whale watching with Elding tours. Saw 4 species of whale & dolphins. Also highly reccomend.

Dinners were at Kopar, austurindiafeglagi, messin, skal.
All the restaurants were great. Kopar was my favourite.

Pastries - best were bakery 280 & BakaBaka

Weather was fantastic - we lucked out 4 sunny days. No rain.

Kjallarinn - techno in Selfoss

I posted here a few months ago about a hard techno event my boyfriend was organizing near Selfoss (Kjallarinn), and thought I’d share a little update since quite a few people seemed interested.

The first event honestly went way beyond what we expected – it ended up completely selling out, and the response was amazing. So we decided pretty quickly that we had to do it again :)

Phase 2 is happening on November 7th, and tickets are already on sale.

We’re keeping the same idea as before – a smaller, underground-focused event with techno and harder sounds rather than mainstream EDM, with both local and international DJs. We’re also building a bit more on the concept this time after seeing how well the first one worked.

Would be really nice to see some of you there this time around as well!

Happy to share more details if anyone is interested :)

Best Stores for Scrapbooking Supplies

Hi everyone,

Recently moved over from the US to be with my husband and I have a couple of project ideas floating around in my mind but im unfamiliar with the craft stores in the area.

I was wondering what the best craft stores for paper craft/scrapbooking supplies would be?

Things like stencils, stamps, stickers and paper itself.

If anyone has some recommendations that would be very much appreciated!

Birding in September

I'll be visiting Reykjavik in September! I would love to go on a bird tour, but it seems that the birding tours aren't so popular in September. Would anyone be open to meeting up to go bird watching and/or going to Lake Tjörnin to check out some birds. I'm as novice as they come, but love the company/help ID'ing birds!
