A low elo OTP Rengar jungle guide and how I climbed from Bronze 4 to Gold 4
I know this is low elo and I’m not looking to impress anyone, just figured I would share a break down of what I did for the other Rengar jungle mains out there trying to climb out of iron/bronze/silver. I started this year in Bronze 4 and just hit gold 4 OTPing Rengar jungle. This post ended up being much longer than I anticipated so forgive me for being so long winded. I hope at least some of you find this helpful!
What I did to climb out of bronze:
Fairly consistent climb throughout once I decided to play smarter, make obvious changes that are common knowledge, and focus on improving my gameplay.
•Fixed my build: Started going Umbral > profane > LDR > IE > situational item (either EON, ghost blade, deaths dance, GA, PD, etc.)
•Prioritized CS: My CS was still terrible at this point (probably around 6 per minute) but I made a concerted effort and it made a huge difference
•Stopped ganking pre 6: unless I was 100% certain it was a free kill, I would farm until lvl 6 and not touch any lanes
•Gank bot then secure drake at lvl 6: Ganked bot with ult whenever possible, majority of the time I would end up with double kill then secure drake (need to ping bot repeatedly so they will help you in bronze). I won about 75% of the games that started this way
•Work on 1st clear speed: Pretty self explanatory
•Made an effort to start dying less: pretty self explanatory
What I did to climb out of silver:
Got stuck for a while around S3, then got serious about improving my gameplay and watching more scrubnoob (not just his youtube highlights but full games on twitch). At some point a few of these things clicked and I started going on 5 to 7 game win streaks all the way up to G4 today. Games still feel pretty easy so I’m hoping these improvements allow me to keep climbing.
•Started linear clearing: Honestly this was 90% of it. I was stuck in low silver and as soon as I made this change my CS jumped to 9 per minute and I started winning 80% of my games. I went from focusing on ganks/kills first and camps second to prioritizing linear clears first then taking gank opportunities as they presented themselves. I’d recommend watching a tutorial on linear clears, but essentially you clear all of your small camps consecutively without interrupting with buffs. So if all of your camps are up, go red > krugs > raptors > wolves > gromp > blue (or the inverse starting top). Don’t start krugs then go in a straight line including your buffs and end on gromp. Initially the pathing sounded counterintuitive to me, but it’s extremely efficient and lines up your spawn timers for your next clear so you can keep cycling your small camps like clock work. Also prevents counter jungling if you show up to them on time. Prioritize your small camps, and don’t deviate from your clear unless there’s a good reason to (example -drop your raptors if you see mid is getting ganked and you can counter gank with ult) I know this one is common knowledge for many of you but it wasn’t for me unfortunately.
•Jungle tracking: Also something you should watch a tutorial for. If you can get your mid laner to ward enemy raptors early so you know which direction the other jungler is clearing that’s great, but most of them in silver won’t. I started keeping tabs on their CS and where they show on the map early on so I could use that information to counter jungle and make plays accordingly. (Example: If I was blue side and started red buff and I knew the enemy jungler started red buff and I saw them gank bot after first clear, I would take their top side camps after scuttle). There’s too much to cover so watch tutorials if you aren’t doing this already.
•Don’t give anything away for free: If I see the enemy jungler start drag while I’m top side, I go to grubs if they’re up, take their top side camps, or try and take top or mid tower. Pretty self explanatory.
•Stopped going for late game picks unless I knew the target was isolated and I could one shot them: Just dont jump on a target if you don’t know exactly where the rest of the enemy team is. Pretty self explanatory.
•Started AFK farming when I was behind: If I found myself 0/3 at 10 minutes I just cycled jungle camps and stopped ganking or going for objectives until there was an opportunity that was 100% free
•Stopped taking ANY risks if my team was behind and waited for enemy team to make a mistake: If team was behind, just farmed what was 100% safe and waited for enemy team to give us an opening. Silver players constantly make mistakes, playing overly safe and waiting for a mistake to capitalize on is the only way to turn a game around.
•Mute toxic/negative players: Started muting people the moment they started spam pinging or typed anything negative. Or just muted everyone as soon as the game started.
•Late game barons: Silver players have tunnel vision on late game dragons and getting Sol. Fuck that. If I see the enemy team go for 3rd dragon (or even Sol or elder) while baron is up (which happens all the time in silver) I ping baron 10 times and high tail it over there. I’ve won a TON of games in silver off of this play.
•Stay alive and save ult for late game baron/elder steals: If the enemy team is ahead or has prio on either of these and you know they’re likely going to do it, don’t die doing something stupid or waste your ult on a pick 30 seconds before they spawn. Rengar ult is great for stealing objectives, save it for that as it can decide games when you’re behind (and you can’t steal if you’re dead so make sure you’re on the map)
•Press tab before team fights and picks: Just know how strong everyone is so you don’t make stupid mistakes. •Make sure that you jump the right target in team fights (example: delete the 10/0 Draven instead of the 4/2 lux). And make sure you dont get cocky while you are 5/0 and jump on a Yone, then discover they are 12/1 while you are grey screened.
•Don’t engage in fights or go for objectives unless you have prio/numbers advantage or you know where everyone is: Pretty self explanatory
•Die less especially when ahead: Pretty self explanatory, just play carefully
Again this ended up being MUCH longer than I anticipated, but hopefully it helps some fellow Rengar mains out there struggling in low elo. I think it would be cool to see similar posts from higher elo Rengar players explaining what they did to climb at different tiers. Thanks for reading!
