The warning signs I look for before replying to job posts on Reddit [save these somewhere]
I've read thousands of hiring posts on these subs for a side project (more on that at the bottom), and the scams keep making the same moves:
- They want money from you first, like a "registration fee" or a "training kit" you have to buy. A real client pays you. If money goes from you to them first, walk away.
- They only want to talk on Telegram or WhatsApp, and they push you off Reddit fast.
- They ask to "rent" your account (Upwork, LinkedIn, a verified PayPal, sometimes a bank account). People end up moving stolen money this way without realizing it.
- They'll only pay in crypto, or they send a check for more than the agreed amount and ask you to send back the difference.
- The pay makes no sense for the work, like $40/hr for "simple data entry, no experience needed."
If a post hits even one of these, I'd skip it.
Full disclosure on the side project: I got annoyed enough by all this that I built a site that pulls only the hiring posts from about 19 of these subs and flags the ones showing these signs: https://onlyhiring.hassandev.me. It's free and there's no sign-up. It still misses some, so the list above is worth knowing either way.
