Self-Promo Video a New Old School Isometric RTS Game I'm Building

Would love to hear your thoughts, it's been a long passion of mine to make a old school isometric style RTS war game like sudden strike 2 but using advanced methods like super smart AI using actual cover, destruction and much more!

Edit: Did not expect this post to get such warm feedback! I don't have a steam wishlist page yet, I have a Youtube channel here: https://www.youtube.com/@Rbuhrgames You guys are the best!

Take my money, please

13

u/RBGames777 Aug 12 '26

So glad you like it! Hope I can get it done asap!

12

u/Wacka_blocka Aug 12 '26

Please take your time, sir! A finely crafted and polished game is very much preferable

u/RBGames777 Aug 12 '26

Indeed! Thank you

u/Hour_Initiative8738 Aug 12 '26

Dont have anything constructive to say.

But so far heres what looks really cool:

The explosions and cratering look really nice and dynamic.
I like how enemy infantry sidles up against walls and braces their guns on the walls before firing, then ducking down to cover.
The environmental destruction, and destruction of cover is very nice.
Near the end you can see one infantry dragging another infantry, will this play into a combat medic system?

Keep up the good work it looks good.

14

u/RBGames777 Aug 12 '26

wow thanks for the feedback! Yes so they will run out to save downed teammates, if other teammates are nearby they will give cover fire, there is a Suppression system and morale built in. Any teammate can drag a teammate to safety and revive the downed teammate. They will drag downed friendly behind cover before giving aid. However if they get shot again they will die. If a medic was reviving them they will continue to live if they get downed again.

u/bonelatch Aug 12 '26

Does it have a name or Steam page yet?

15

u/RBGames777 Aug 12 '26

it doesnt have a name or steam page, this is super early development pre alpha stages, but would like to get some momentum going and possibly funding in the future to speed up the process

5

u/bonelatch Aug 12 '26

Ohh okay....WELL...it looks good. Best of luck. Look forward to seeing it. Please dont name it something generic lol.

1

u/RBGames777 Aug 12 '26

haha yes I know right! Maybe you have some ideas or direction? :)

1

u/bonelatch Aug 12 '26

Whats the premise exactly?

6

u/RBGames777 Aug 12 '26

So, similar to Sudden Strike 2, but with a lot more game modes. I have an entire trench system where you can build defences, mines, barbed wire, bunkers, and defend key points. There will also be a Battlefield-style Conquest game mode.

So, there will be multiple game modes and various missions incorporating these modes and, obviously, multiplayer if all goes to plan!

1

u/bonelatch Aug 12 '26

Oh okay, but is it WWII or another theatre/war/era? Is there a story or running theme you are going for?

3

u/RBGames777 Aug 12 '26

I'm still deciding between modern or cold war style, but thinking of implementing a drone war style on top of it.

3

u/RBGames777 Aug 12 '26

if that is succesful I'm guessing it's going modern...

1

u/arcibalds89 Aug 12 '26

What engine do you use ?

2

u/RBGames777 Aug 13 '26

I'm using the Godot engine

1

u/arcibalds89 Aug 13 '26

Looks good so far. I would love sudden strike style game, but more RTS ,with base building and so on šŸ™‚

1

u/RBGames777 Aug 14 '26

Yes I think the base building is in order, I already have a very good trench build system in place!

1

u/Traditional_Bet8239 Aug 14 '26

so mac support i assume? would be peak

1

u/RBGames777 Aug 14 '26

I'm developing on mac so def Mac and Win support!!!

1

u/spluga Aug 13 '26

i'd like to help name your game. when you say trench system, do you mean like terraforming the map to build your defenses?

1

u/RBGames777 Aug 13 '26

not terraforming but already pre defined trench systems, procedurally generated, what do you think of the name "Hard Cover" ?

1

u/PyrZern Aug 12 '26

If that's from a super early phase, then I cannot wait to see how it becomes later.

Keep us updated.

1

u/RBGames777 Aug 12 '26

Yes very early stages! thanks for being here!

1

u/RBGames777 Aug 12 '26

I just set up a Discord here: https://discord.gg/a2Vh24HeT and I have a Youtube Channel here: https://www.youtube.com/@Rbuhrgames

8

u/Quirky_Gazelle6910 Aug 12 '26

Just add Zsu57-2,Shilka etc old Soviet machines :D

3

u/RBGames777 Aug 12 '26

ooooo, i also like the pre tech phase...

7

u/COUser93 Aug 12 '26

Looks like Panzer Strike

7

u/RBGames777 Aug 12 '26

This game will use advanced AI cover systems, AI behaviour, like morale, suppressive fire, flanking, destruction and much more on the micro management but still if you wanted the AI will figure out how to do it.

3

u/Iorny31 Aug 12 '26

Looks badass!

2

u/RBGames777 Aug 12 '26

wow thanks so much! this is the first post and feedback I'm getting

3

u/Tall_Definition9009 Aug 12 '26

It certainly looks nice.

1

u/RBGames777 Aug 12 '26

Glad you liked it!

3

u/Cs1981Bel Aug 12 '26

In a way it reminds me of the game Desert Strike..

Good job

Would you need help to find a name ?

2

u/RBGames777 Aug 12 '26

Ahhh! Desert strike! Way back!
Any name ideas would help a lot!
Thank you!!!

1

u/Cs1981Bel Aug 13 '26

I'd call it

CONTACT!

And then add a Tagline or subtitle based on real military jargon

For the aesthetic of the logo I'd go for something 90's inspired

Either with metallic surfaces with bullet holes or stone walls ,or a laser grid (radar grid)

2

u/Financial_Relief_150 Aug 13 '26

So nice. Thank you for developing the game.

The scales of things are really important. Please please matching them for the immersives

2

u/grdja Aug 13 '26

You are building it or Claude is building it?

2

u/vantech45 Aug 15 '26

God bless you for the masterpiece please dont stop

1

u/RBGames777 Aug 16 '26

Thanks so much!

2

u/WanderingToast Aug 16 '26

Can you make it more dusty? Like when the tanks move they leave long, lingering clouds of dust, as well as explosions.

It would be super cool if the dust masked the location of soldiers from the enemy.

2

u/Dan-Warchest_Studios Aug 29 '26

So good! Really excited to see what you do with it

2

u/RBGames777 Aug 29 '26

Thank you! Glad that you are excited about this! Steam wishlist page coming soon!

2

u/Dan-Warchest_Studios Aug 29 '26

Yeah, get it up there! The sound is especially good!

1

u/haro0828 Aug 12 '26

Looks cool bro

1

u/RBGames777 Aug 12 '26

Thank you!!!

1

u/Dangerous-Memory-275 Aug 12 '26

Looks good! Best of luck with development!

1

u/RBGames777 Aug 12 '26

Thank you so much! will need all of it hahaha

1

u/Xaverosso Aug 12 '26

Interesting.

1

u/RBGames777 Aug 12 '26

thanks!!!

1

u/Idleverse Aug 12 '26

looks really nice!

1

u/RBGames777 Aug 12 '26

thanks so much!!! so glad to hear that!

2

u/RBGames777 Aug 12 '26

did not expect to get such a warm response from the community

1

u/constipated-rodent Aug 12 '26

This looks so cool! Also reminds me of something not sure what tho

1

u/RememberZasz Aug 12 '26

Looks cool so far. I’m assuming the cover benefits are only applied directionally. If that’s the case, how good is the game’s ai at picking the correct cover direction, and is there a way to manually put their backs against walls? Do the tanks provide cover as well?
I’m really digging the art style of what’s here.

3

u/RBGames777 Aug 12 '26

great question! The AI automatically switches position depending on where the enemy is shooting from, they prioritise cover over anything, they actually value their little AI lives :) , the cover works great, they also lean around corners, RPG run out of cover fire and run back into cover, they drag wounded to cover and perform aid. When cover is destroyed they move to new cover, they use flanking, suppression fire and much more, they even throw grenades back :) Lot's of videos coming to come RBGames youtube channel. and here? I don't want to be spammy though

1

u/RememberZasz Aug 12 '26

Nice. The units trying not to die sounds like it’ll be a cool addition. Do the units automatically start suppressing for cover bounding? Also, any plans on creating elevated positions, like rooftops, for cover/height advantage? Is there a FoW and a toggle fire command? If the troops are effectively covered, that could make for a decent ambush set up.

Keep spamming the sub, I don’t see an issue. You’re making an RTS game out of love for older RTS games. There’s probably no better place to talk to people of similar mind.

1

u/PoultryTM Aug 12 '26

Ooohw, look like good old sudden strike in its prime, would buy 10/10

1

u/RBGames777 Aug 12 '26

Wow thank you!

1

u/mwiley62890 Aug 12 '26

Is it available??? I’ll gladly make a purchase

1

u/RBGames777 Aug 12 '26

not yet! but would love to get it released asap!!!

1

u/IceManLeroy Aug 12 '26

Looks great! Can't wait to wishlist!

As far as the look goes, how are you achieving the almost pixelated/grainy look? Is it shaders or post processing or the assets themselves?

1

u/Bullitt_006 Aug 12 '26

Wow this looks fantastic. The soldiers seem really clever. I've been waiting for an RTS to expand on the cover system coh had. Do they fight in hand to hand combat when they get close?

2

u/RBGames777 Aug 12 '26

Yes I loved the cover system the introduced! This is taking it a lot further! and thanks for the melee combat feature request! def possible!

1

u/Minimum_Scared Aug 12 '26

Looks amazing! Keep it up!!

1

u/RBGames777 Aug 12 '26

Thanks so much!

1

u/paladincubano Aug 12 '26

Base Building or just units to play?

2

u/RBGames777 Aug 12 '26

Should it have base building? I have defence building and trench building so far.

1

u/paladincubano Aug 12 '26

Personally, I’d love to see it! Building structures for unit production, upgrades, and defenses adds a lot of depth. Of course, that implies implementing an economy system (basic or complex), so it ultimately depends on your vision for the game.

1

u/deeek Aug 12 '26

I am putting in my vote for base building as well. Just my $0.02. Otherwise it looks great!

1

u/GoldenYolkGames Aug 12 '26

Great work, I love the chaos of it all. +1 vote for base building.

1

u/Traditional_Bet8239 Aug 14 '26

Either way could be pretty cool. Having a pre-planned defensive and offensive plan could be fun though, where you select your units and build defenses/trenches beforehand then play a total war style battle.

1

u/the_y2k_kid Aug 12 '26

I have a soft spot for desert games so I'm already liking it. Mechanically it looks interesting because I always appreciate a good cover system. The real challenge will be if you decide to make a single player story driven campaign. That seems to be where most indie devs fall down.Ā

1

u/Beneficial_Rule_898 Aug 12 '26

will modding tools and map editor be in the plans? would love a mod of a different era like wwi or Vietnam or even 17th century in this games engine if planned.

1

u/Heavy-Notice-9101 Aug 12 '26

makes me think of the good old days with Close Combat: A Bridge Too Far

very cool stuff

1

u/RBGames777 Aug 12 '26

oh wow thanks for reminding me! now i feel old again hahah! but such good games!

1

u/WorldMan1 Aug 12 '26

Love it! Lean into the late cold war or mid 90s tech, T72s in Iraqish vs Iranish or fighting in Somalia or Congo.Ā

1

u/No_Slide4152 Aug 12 '26

That looks awesome i would play the shit outta that. If you need beta testers let me know

1

u/kunamashina Aug 12 '26

Take my money. I always wondered why nobody developed sudden strike like in modern warfare

1

u/Foxiest_Fox Aug 12 '26

I'm guessing GOAP or HTN you're using for your AI then, to alllow emergent goal-driven behavior as such?

1

u/BestPseudonym Aug 12 '26

The sound design is pretty sweet, though I do feel like the reverb on the gunfire is kind of high. Would be curious to see how it sounds dialed down a little bit

1

u/LunaWolfStudios Developer - Sheep Tag 2 Aug 12 '26

Impressive! Isometric can be tricky and you're nailing it. The effects look great too.

1

u/Professional_Tree325 Aug 12 '26

Havent played something like sudden strike in a while and with the t55/t62 looking tanks it looks like ur taking it into a more modern world. good luck! Would def try it out been loooking for more rts in that era rather then scifi or ww2

1

u/TehReclaimer2552 Aug 12 '26

I fuck with this heavy

1

u/fivemagicks Aug 13 '26

Uh this actually looks pretty sick, dude. Us millennials are suckers for some sprites.

1

u/Easy_Amphibian_1211 Aug 13 '26

Much of my childhood was spent playing sudden strike 2 and this gives me some of those old vibes. I love it!
For some reason, I wanted to see infantry taking cover using a destroyed tank. Just like having destructable environments, you could also have constructable environments with the burnt out husks of your fallen tanks. I dont know how hard that would be to implant or if it would even improve the game very much. But best of luck though, it looks very promising!

1

u/North-Active-6731 Aug 13 '26

This is amazing please post once you have it up and accept my donations would be happy to contribute

1

u/jgesq Aug 13 '26

Looks great. Keep us posted.

1

u/GubGonzales Aug 13 '26

Very cool! Have you decided whether when you move command the infantry they keep their relative world position, or can you drag out for formations?

I would love to see hip firing on the move too :) Goodluck with it, would definitely play!

1

u/AlwaysHasAthought Aug 13 '26

Let me know when I can wishlist it!

it's working really well, check the videos on the youtube channel RBGames

1

u/Banjoschmanjo Aug 13 '26

Will it have campaign mode and what games would you say are the closest reference point for the tone and style of the story?

1

u/Grazzakk Aug 13 '26

Looks awesome!

1

u/Xrod195 Aug 13 '26

Really nice, please add base building!

1

u/tomislav_cipcic Aug 13 '26

My oh my, this looks interesting! 🤩 Any more info on the game? Do you have a Steam page?

1

u/JaphetSkie Aug 13 '26

Will the vehicles have subsystem damage mechanics or will it just follow conventional RTS damaging? I'm fine with either, by the way.

3

u/RBGames777 Aug 13 '26

It already have directional damage, front 3 shots i think, back 1, sides 2, but much more will be implemented!

1

u/Wandering__Albatross Aug 13 '26

How does cover work? The movement system doesn’t seem specific enough to assign a group to cover very easily? It looks amazing though!

1

u/ObiusMarkusReddit Aug 13 '26

Looks nice. I couldn't really see, but i get the feeling that infantry rifles can't hurt tanks, which is one of my major gripes with red alert and like games.

Do units gain experience and if they do how does it affect them?

1

u/RBGames777 Aug 13 '26

Planning on implementing an entire experience system that you will take to the next mission, so you grow with your troops and recruit new ones when others die.

Also machine gun fire or rifle fire wont effect tanks.

1

u/ObiusMarkusReddit Aug 13 '26

That sounds great

1

u/TheSteamyPickle Aug 13 '26

Are there also AK47s for everyone?

1

u/coolguy98363 Aug 13 '26

When is it releasing?

1

u/RBGames777 Aug 13 '26

Hi check the Youtube channel for more frequent updates! No release date yet

1

u/Accomplished_Boat_65 Aug 13 '26

The explosions are oddly satisfying. Good stuff, looks good.

1

u/Scared-Scientist-324 Aug 13 '26

Hi. Can you say if the damage system more target-based or more physics-driven? It looks like with good physics it would give more tactical depth.

If the blast wave threw soldiers back and random shrapnel wounded them, it would, I think, be very suitable for a tactical game.

1

u/xScorchx Aug 13 '26

This looks like that old game black gold

Excited for your project!

1

u/Sarnayer Aug 13 '26

It says your twitter account doesnt exist in the link!

2

u/RBGames777 Aug 13 '26

Thank you it's fixed now!

1

u/Sarnayer Aug 13 '26

You are welcome!

1

u/walnutdressing Aug 13 '26

RTS where soldiers are intelligent and actually useful sounds great

1

u/RBGames777 Aug 13 '26

yes no more cannon fodder :)

1

u/dimitaritskov Aug 13 '26

Woww .. looks great!
Is it build for desktop or mobile? The video is vertical so I assumed it'll be mobile :)
What tools did you use ... unity or unreal?
I'm working now on my own RTS but it's 2D. Building 3D game scares me šŸ˜„
Would love to share what is you process of building the game!
Looks amazing!

1

u/RBGames777 Aug 13 '26

Hey this will be Windows and Mac with possibly Mobile and Console support. To be honest not sure what ratio reddit wants , this was just a short video from my Youtube channel. There you can see alot more! Thanks for the kind words

1

u/Orlandu84 Aug 13 '26

Please keep us updated!

I will! Join the Youtube channel for the most updated devlogs! Hope to see you there! https://www.youtube.com/@Rbuhrgames

1

u/brizla18 Aug 13 '26

As someone else said, take my money man. Infantry animations look phenomenal already. I love the T62 model as well. Since you mentioned how Sudden Strike 2 is inspiration, are you going for realistic feel to the damage and combat?

2

u/RBGames777 Aug 13 '26

Hey thanks so much for the kind words! Yes I will be going as realistic as possible but also as fun as possible and pushing the limits on AI behaviour. I think it's been neglected for far too long in RTS games.

1

u/Legitimate-Dog5690 Aug 13 '26

Have you gone for determinism/lockstep, or a more modern approach of just trying to sync everything?

1

u/aguswings Aug 13 '26

Can you run over infantry like the classic Command & Conquer?

1

u/RBGames777 Aug 14 '26

Not yet but absolutely possible!

1

u/keep-pushing-on Aug 15 '26

ā€œUnit lost, unit lost,ā€¦ā€

1

u/TheTurkPegger Aug 13 '26

Ouu that's a segsy looking game right there. Don't forget to focus on gameplay as well.

2

u/RBGames777 Aug 14 '26

Thank you! Yes gameplay will be the no1 priority! Thanks for being here

1

u/spector111 Aug 14 '26

Certainty a good start. The movement of units is a bit "floaty", but the visuals and combat look nice.

When you have a name and a steam page let know so I can show it off in my RTS news on my YouTube channel.

2

u/RBGames777 Aug 14 '26

Wow! Thanks so much! I will let you know as soon as I get it up and running! Really appreciate the encouragement!

1

u/spector111 Aug 14 '26

Perfect. You are welcome and keep working!

1

u/SpaceMonkey_03 Aug 14 '26

Those explorations are gorgeous. Release a demo already?

1

u/Unlucky_Ad4879 Aug 14 '26

All I can say is please add a skirmish mode, I saw a PVP only game that looks similar and it was dead within a week because nobody played PVP, so there were no lobbies.

1

u/RBGames777 Aug 14 '26

oh heck yes! This is the first foundation I'm working on. What was the other game called?

1

u/Unlucky_Ad4879 Aug 14 '26

https://store.steampowered.com/app/4024960/ModernFire/

Modern fire, I really liked the design when it came to vehicles and weaponry and stuff, it's just it was PVP only for some reason.

Glad to hear you're working on PVE as well, this looks sick!

1

u/RBGames777 Aug 14 '26

oh sweet thanks for sharing, everything you see in game so far has been player vs AI. And also everything is happening in a sandbox style so far.

1

u/VEX_INC Aug 14 '26

Looks interesting, I like that the ground has some texture. Maybe ad a few more small, medium and large doodads to set the feeling & immersion of the maps!?

2

u/RBGames777 Aug 14 '26

Haha funny you say that it was actually implemented today, will post a updated video asap!

1

u/YesterdayAlone2553 Aug 15 '26

Dude I only have so much saliva

1

u/RBGames777 Aug 15 '26

Hahaha ! I have probably only shown about 4% of the game here

1

u/Comfortable_Sun_9215 Aug 15 '26

The isometric view is the best for RTS; practical and beautiful.

1

u/eastlin1 Aug 15 '26

You should really check out men of war, they really made RTS games that feels realistic, for example:

- Buildings can be destroyed modularly, ie a wall can be broken

- Objects have physics, a thank that shoots at a tank with its cannon in the wrong angle will have its shell bounce off it, and when it bounces off it the projectile will still fly around and might hit something else like another tank or a group of infantry / building that now has a shole in it

- infantry are super fragile, but they are easy to hide in bushes etc so they can be sneaky and having a hidden MG gunner at the right position able to cover an open field can effectively deny that area.

1

u/RBGames777 Aug 15 '26

Yes I remember it well! Was a really fun game! Thanks for bringing it back into my memory, I'm def planning on taking this to a whole new level. I've only shared about 3% of what the game is fully capable off , a ot more coming

1

u/eastlin1 Aug 16 '26

being able to have one soldier crawl in the grass slowly sneaking up behind a tiger tank and then throw an anti tank grenade onto its engine and see the whole thing blow up is a 10/10 experience, same as flanking a MG nest and then taking it out and picking up the MG to then turn it onto your enemies feels amazing.

1

u/TheKiddIncident Aug 24 '26

Can you discuss the architecture a bit? I'm thinking about building one based on my novels, trying to figure out right now how to build it. The look you have in the shot above is exactly what I'm going for.

1

u/Akhi_Police Aug 25 '26

Can you add slight gore / blood

Edit: dont make it too hardcore. I like realism to an extent and dislike gory battles that disturb the visuals too much

1

u/RBGames777 Aug 26 '26

yea I've been thinking about this but not sure how it effects reach for promotion at the end, any ideas?

1

u/Akhi_Police Aug 25 '26

I like the animations. I like the systems like Trench and such. I like that troops fly over the place when hit by explosions. I like the visuals. Everything is clean, visible, i can clearly see the troops thanks to the indicators and visual cues.

The graphics and artstyle look great for reskin mods (dune style or even steampunk and such)

2

u/RBGames777 Aug 26 '26

wow thanks for the great feedback! its so encouraging to hear this!! just awaiting steam to approve my wishlist page then it's all green light!

1

u/missing1102 Aug 27 '26

This looks good. I cannot stand fordt person view or the angled mutli positional panning. It alway left me feeling sick. I used to have to fake it with my son when he was little playing that game COD.

The scale looks pretty good. The building sizes maybe compared to the tanks? I played these type of games progressively since they were created and I always thought there were millions of people like me who got lost in consoles games that are all the same.

1

u/Zflocco Aug 31 '26

Got a name for the project? There's no steam page right?

1

u/RBGames777 Aug 31 '26

Defilade RTS, Steam page coming very soon! You can follow the development here: https://www.youtube.com/@Rbuhrgames

1

u/Spungdoodles Aug 12 '26

I need a game on PS5. RTS are few and far between.

1

u/RBGames777 Aug 12 '26

maybe I can do a port

1

u/Old-Cicada1695 Sep 11 '26

whats the probable minimum spec requirements for this game?
