If you love short films, you're in the right place.
We created Ray35 because some of the most exciting films we've discovered are short films that play at festivals, win awards, introduce incredible filmmakers, and then somehow become almost impossible to find afterward.
This community is for discovering those films and talking about them.
We'll be sharing:
π¬ Short films worth your time
π Festival discoveries & award-winning films
π Films and filmmakers from around the world
π₯ Filmmaker spotlights & conversations
π¬ Discussions about short filmmaking and cinema
πΏ Recommendations from the community
We're also building Ray35, a streaming service focused on curated short films. But this subreddit isn't just about Ray35, we'd love for it to become a place where cinephiles can discover and recommend great shorts, regardless of where they're available.
So let's start with a simple question:
What's the best short film you've seen recently?
Tell us what it is and, more importantly, why you think people should watch it.ποΈ

This week, I put together three short films that ended up sharing something I didn't initially expect.
Theyβre all about people going through difficult moments: a dream that didn't work out, a life that feels confining, or a situation that could have ended much worse.
But none of these films is really about staying in that moment.
They're about finding a way to make peace with what happened and keep going.
π Winner: Special Jury Mention
Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival 2017Official Selection
Palm Springs International ShortFest 2017
A former child actor who once had a chance at the life he dreamed of now drives an auto-rickshaw.
This is my favorite of the three.
What stayed with me is how quietly the film deals with letting go.
π Winner: Best Short Film
Toronto International Film Festival 2018Official Selection
Sundance Film Festival 2019
There's something beautiful and heartbreaking about how temporary that happiness feels.
The harvest is coming, and so is the end of their little world.
π Winner: Special Jury Award for Screenwriting
Sundance Film Festival 2021Shortlisted: Best Live-Action Short Film
Academy Awards 2022
What I loved most is what happens after they finally get out.
If you have about an hour this weekend, give these three a try.

A quiet Clermont-Ferrand selected film about sight, superstition, and who decides what a person is worth.

Counterfeit Kunkoo by Reema Sengupta is the kind of film that takes you somewhere new for the cheapest ticket there is. In 15 minutes, you're inside another part of the world, seeing the lives, challenges and traditions people are tied to. There's very little dialogue, but it says so much.
Her story. Her way.

There's a version of yourself you keep in reserve for certain rooms. Not a lie, exactly β just the parts of you that get folded away because the room wasn't built to hold them.
Kado sits inside that quiet negotiation: what we shed and what we keep when we want to belong somewhere, and what it costs to keep shedding. It asks a harder question underneath the gentle one β is a gift really a gift if part of what you're giving is your own disappearance?
Worth sitting with afterward: which rooms are you still folding yourself smaller to enter?

There's a particular kind of violence in being turned into a story. Not physical violence but narrative violence. Someone decides who you are before they've even met you, and then goes looking for the version of you that confirms it.
Disco Obu sits inside that discomfort. It's about the gap between a person and the character other people need them to be and about how the camera, which claims to just observe, is actually one of the most powerful tools we have for deciding in advance what we're going to find.
Worth sitting with afterward: how often do we do this to the people around us, minus the camera?

I'm gonna go with The Feast (Virundhu) π², directed by Rishi Chandna, a 25-minute Tamil-language drama from India that won the Special Jury Prize π in International Competition at Clermont-Ferrand. The main character is a woman who seems to be struggling and poor, yet she goes around the village πΎ gathering ingredients for one secret dish, something she believes can get her what she desperately needs. ποΈ Watch The Feast on Ray35, free for a limited time β³

Not necessarily a film that won a major award. Not necessarily something with millions of views.
I mean a film you watched and thought:
βHow does this not have more attention?β
I'd love to discover some hidden gems from different countries β especially films that had a festival run but disappeared afterward.
Drop the title below and tell us why you think people should watch it. π¬
