Developer Posting Practices

Post image
41 Upvotes

Hello Developers!

Please use this post a reference of what rules and guidelines you need to follow in order to post in r/rpg_gamers

When You Can Post

  • When the game is initially posted to a storefront (Steam, NSO etc.)
  • When the game launches

What Needs to be in the Post

  • Title of the game must be included in the title of the post
  • A description of the game (including the anticipated or actual release date
  • A link to the Storefront Page (Steam Page, etc)
  • Please do not include links to other pages (Discord, etc)

Other Requirements

  • We don't allow posts for mobile games, browser games, Discord based games etc.
  • We remove posts for games that use Gen AI in development. (assets generation, voice acting, etc.)
  • Please use the Developer Post Flair (We figured out why it wasn't previously available as a option).

Questions?

  • If you're not sure if you qualify, please send a mod mail before posting. If you post without asking and it gets removed, you risk a ban.

We'll update these rules if and when any changes occur, the industry evolves fast so sometimes adjustments are required to keep up.

  • Thank you for all your support, we want to support indie developers but we need to make sure that everyone gets equal opportunities and the subreddit doesn't get overrun with advertising.

Thanks!

Guide Good Posting Practices

Post image
25 Upvotes

Hello everyone,

In order to help folks craft the best possible posts, we wanted to provide some best posting practices above and beyond the sub-reddit rules and guidelines.

The overall goal for this sub-reddit is to be a one-stop shop for RPG Fans. A place where people can have meaningful discussions alongside reading relevant news and reviews on games that are of interest to the community. The following are the types of posts that are most welcome, along with some suggestions on how to present them to the community:

News

If you happen to come across a news article that may be of interest to RPG fans, we recommend copying the link to paste in the link section of a post. We also suggest (but not require) a small blurb to provide some context as to the content of the article since many of the titles tend to skew towards click bait.

Reviews

We appreciate and encourage folks to provide their opinions on games. Review posts must be text based, please do not simply provide a link to an external blog or website (these will be removed), the review must be in the body of the post. We also ask that the review be a representation of your opinion of the game, and not rage-bait.

Discussions

We love a good discussion about a topic or theme, but we ask that it be presented in good faith (again, no ragebait).

Game Recommendations

Before asking for a recommendation, please use the flair filter to check to see if someone has already asked the exact same question you're about to ask the community.

Not every post falls under one of the above, but they do cover a majority of the discussions here on the sub-reddit. No matter what type of post you have in mind, the one common thread among them all is respect.

Please note, unless you're posting a news article link, a body of text must be included in your post. If it's just a title and a picture, it will be removed. This is in order to reduce bot activity as well as encourage more meaningful discussions.

Please always respect your fellow RPG Fan whenever creating a new post, or responding to one.

Thank you to everyone who makes this community a joy to participate in on a daily basis!

The Mod-Team

Discussion Which RPG has the best Necromancer class?

Post image
225 Upvotes

Go for it ! lots of strong contenders out there. Which has the best overall in your opinion? think about skills, Depth, & the overall believability of being a Necromancer. Also just going to throw in here that I think an Open World Warhammer fantasy RPG would make Skyrim old news.

Developer The Lich Wars - Story-Rich Gothic RPG - Just Announced

Hello fellow RPG fans!

I'm the lead developer of The Lich Wars - a story-driven RPG where you live the life of a musket soldier over a period of 30 years, across two wars of the undead and a turbulent peacetime. The Lich Wars is the prequel to the CRPG The Necromancer's Tale which we released in 2025.

We have just opened the game's Steam Page:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/2245710/The_Lich_Wars/

The Lich Wars unfolds through branching interactive fiction, with RPG skills and skillchecks, and a unique narrative-driven combat system. It will have 300,000 words (estimated) of hand-written narrative from our team of writers (the same team that wrote The Necromancer's Tale), with lots of side-content as well as three main career paths. We're augmenting this with maps and 3D 'tabletop' scenes as well as hundreds of hand-drawn illustrations and character portraits.

Expected release date: late 2028.

For more details please see the Steam page, and of course I'd be very happy to discuss the game here too.

Discussion What RPG has the best Barbarian class?

Post image
270 Upvotes

Subjectively, but I hope this goes without saying.

For reasons of pure nostalgia, my choice has always been Diablo 2, the barb there is the quintessential brawny, barely clothed muscle-machine of pure frenzy and death. It's also the reason that in all subsequent ARPGs I play classes that even remotely remind me of the barbarian (in Last Epoch it's the shaman, which despite the name feels more like a sort of magical barbarian than anything else, at least how I built mine) and in Grim Dawn it's of course the new beserker class they added in Fangs of Asterkarn, and so on and so forth.

I also enjoyed the Barb in BG3, mainly because in tabletop my favorite in 5e is the throw Barb. It allows for so much toyboxing since you're activelly encouraged to use improvised stuff (running tavern brawler) and knocking everything you hit prone is just the icing on the top. Strong build and extremely fun to play. So it'd put it second or even first in all fairness, if I disregard the D2 barb because again, it is a nostalgia pick more than anything.

What about you? I know there's barb enjoyers lurking among you

Any word on Xuan-Yuan Sword: Mists Beyond the Mountains?

I'm starving for turn base games, so I just found this one.

Seems it had a rough localization and the battle rate was crazy.

Still worths the he chance?

Looking for people that actually played it.

Tks.

Recommendation request Looking for RPGs to play. Preferably mordern ones.

Some RPGs I have tried

Mass Effect trilogy - Absolutely loved everything except how bad the ending was for 3. And the gameplay for first two games were not that good.

Oblivion - Really Enjoyed it. But that leveling system was soo ass and combat was pretty meh.

Skyrim - Couldn't get into it. The combat was not that great. And Skyrim's more Nordic inspired setting didn't do it for me.

Witcher 3 - Couldn't get into it. The story felt like really relied on me caring about Yennefer and Ciri. But at the same time. I don't know who they are. That's not really the games fault. It's Witcher 3 after all. Based on Books as well. And I really don't feel like reading whole series of books and two whole games to finally be emotionally be invested in the games story. And the combat got old pretty quick. Really interesting world tho.

Dragon Age Origins - Couldn't get into it. Don't even know why I couldn't get into it cuz on paper everything about the game felt something I would want from a game.

Kotor 1&2 - Absolutely loved them. The gameplay was pretty straightforward but it still felt fun. It feels good to make an entire room full of enemies float in air and the story was really good. And really enjoyed the role playing aspect of them.

Fallout New Vegas - Enjoyed it but couldn't finish it. Currently putting it on hold

Fallout 1 - Too old for me.

Baldurs Gate - Too old for me.

Baldurs Gate 3 - Enjoyed it a lot. But eventually lost interest and couldn't finish it.

Divinity Original Sins 2 - By Far the best RPG game I have played. Loved everything about it.

Kingdom Come Deliverence - Enjoyed the combat but the overall game felt bit tedious and janky.

Alpha Protocol - Really enjoyed the Role playing elements of the game. But the actual gameplay felt soo janky and buggy. But overall enjoyed it.

Deus Ex Jensen Duology - Really enjoyed them.

Cyberpunk 2077 - Only RPG game I played and hated it. Dialogue made me cringe every second. And any weapon that isn't your fist feels terrible to use.

Tyranny - Currently playing it. Enjoying it so far.

Outer worlds - This one I haven't played. But I often hear people talk about it as suggestion for RPGs. The overall premise for the story didn't entice me

Appreciate any recommendations.

I don't have any consoles. So games available for PC would be very helpful.

Recommendation request Which RPGs have mages that can act as healers?

Post image
9 Upvotes

Like the White Mage from FF. Or Elementalist from GW2.
I always like to play healer in multiplayer games, and really love the mage archetype (the whole learning from books and not because of a god/bloodline/patron).
Most RPGs use Priests or Clerics as their main healer, which is also a cool archetype, but I like mages a bit more.

Recommendation request Dragon's Dogma 2 or The Blood of Dawnwalker?

With the Crimson Desert DLC being pushed back, I've decided it's time to start a new game. After putting over 800 hours into Crimson Desert and doing just about everything you could possibly do in the game, I think it's finally time for a change lol.

I've heard great things about both games but I'm having a hard time deciding which one to jump into next.

Recommendation request Games that let you fulfil that Ranger (D&D/Aragorn) fantasy

Core thing I'm looking for are RPGs that let you build a character (in case its a party based game) or MC like that, especially being proficient with both bow and some kind of melee weapon. Bonuses for survival and tracking mechanics/animal handling or companion integrated in some way, but not as crucial. Can be Western or Japanese, action or turn based. I have a decent PC (and knowhow to emulate pretty much anything) as well as a Switch 2.

Games I played that partially fit:

Gameplaywise I guess I played the Elder Scrolls games that way mostly (so 3/4 stealth archer like most people I suppose), in BG3 and especially the Pathfinder games you're better off focusing on one style of combat, but Rangers there are decently capable of doing either at least. Archery felt very nice to have in the early game of the Gothic 1 remake, but later on melee and magic were better. Dragon's Dogma has pretty cool archery classes, but no class that wants to mix bow and melee. I played the first Kingdom Come game, but didn't really like the gameplay in it and how it felt like it ended kinda abruptly.

What are your thoughts on Metaphor: ReFantazio coming on Nintendo Switch 2? This is a Japanese RPG.

Here is a clip of one of their trailers. Check it out and let me know what you think of it.

Looks quite interesting and promising for me. Would you give it a try or not?

Recommendation request Need an immersive palate cleanser

I’ve been playing Valheim for like 2 years straight. I’m ready for a new adventure.

Not looking for a crafting survival type. I’d like something where I can make a unique character, be a lone hero (I don’t prefer being in a party), choose between melee/ranged/mage, a world that feels alive. Things like Elder Scrolls where I can join guilds or something like that. Something that respects my time and is just fun to spend time in, I don’t need a souls-like challenge.

I also dont prefer isometric turn based stuff, but if it’s a 10/10 game I’ll consider it. I made it to Act 3 of BG3 thought it was good but not sure it’s something I can replay.

I know it’s vague. Just shoot me some suggestions!

Review I absolutely adore avowed.

Love first person open world rpgs with magic cast and especially with moral decisions. Love the Elder Scrolls titles and i think this scratches a great itch for that style of game.

The story of Avowed is very simple to follow and the individual character stories are, really touching. Dream zombies? genius. Huge mystery thats intriguing.

The combat is very creative. Infinite arrows and gun bullets. Ended up as a two handed sword shadow rogue. Loved the parry, dodging. It was sooo satisfying. The parkour is super nice too. Love being able to climb easily.

It all felt very creative, I did most everything. Havent 100 percented something since Cyberpunk. The choices really had me questioning how to be...what is even good sometimes. I really loved my companions. Kai is my ride or die.The voice acting and actual facial animations were honestly making me take a moment a few times. the characters really grew on me cause they felt like how people would really move and express.

The questing and ui were also super simple. Ive just started Starfield and got a great appreciation for how simply i could keep up with the UI/menus in avowed. Everything is super accessible in the game.

Highly reccommend the game. Honest 10/10 experience. I wouldnt do all the side quest if it wasnt. Gives fable as an elder scrolls game.

Recommendation request Looking for a great emergent-storytelling RP with an open world and great customization

I'm looking for games like the souls games(+Elden Ring) that have extensive playthrough variety that are

  • Non linear/open-world but still have a wide range bosses(big plus for secret bosses or optional superbosses) to fight and proverbial "end goals"(whether self assigned or otherwise)
  • Not overly reliant on quests or dialogue heavy, the more exigent I can make it and the more "micro-narratives" I can form on my own the better
  • Have a decent variety of customization or character options(whether I want to be a blind hermit devoted to a dark god, or a morally grey bounty hunter).

The more open-ended the game and the more opportunities I can impact the world as my chosen character archetype in meaningful ways, the better

I was thinking about playing Kenshi because it fits this to the tee, but any other recommendations along those lines are more than welcome

Question The Witcher 3 or Baldurs Gate 3?

I’ve been getting my gf into RPG games on her PS5 after I recommended she try them. We watched EdgeRunners on Netflix and she liked it so naturally I told her to play the game then. She got the Platinum trophy for it so needless to say I think she enjoyed it.

She asked for more recommendations so I said she should try either Witcher 3 or BG3 next (to get out of the sci-fi and into more fantasy/magic) but she wants me to pick one lol I love both. I suppose Witcher 3 since that is also a CDPR game but what do you guys think?

I am leaning Witcher considering the new remaster and future DLC next year or because of that should she play BG3 instead? Since it’s not all out yet

Thanks!

Developer GOOD HEAVENS! – Whimsical Fantasy Crafting RPG

Hey everyone! We’ve released Good Heavens! today. Our journey started 5 years ago and I wanted to share this experience with you.

What is the game about?

So in the game, there is a clumsy god; Rar. Basically he creates a world and everything goes downhill. He picks a chosen one to fix everything, then another, then another... So yeah, we are the 25,004th chosen one. While we spawn into this world, what we need to do is survive, improve our skills, and complete the tasks.

There is an entire procedurally generated world at your fingertips, with so many different cities and events to discover. It has a humorous and colorful tone, and you can play it either with friends or on your own. It is co-op up to eight players. You can all upgrade your techs if you want, or each of you can assign roles and play accordingly. There are 3 combat and 3 utility tech trees. It's entirely up to you how you want to customize. Also, no generative AI was used, everything was made with blood and tears of our artists.

If you like to check our game, here is the link to our Steam page.

Hope you’ll like it!

Recommendation request What older game has aged so well that you'd still recommend it over modern alternatives?

I've been playing through a load of older RPGs lately, mainly FFV Advance, Breath of Fire and Koudelka, and honestly I'm surprised by how well some of them hold up.

There's something about these older games that I find more enjoyable than a lot of modern releases, even with some of their dated mechanics and lack of quality-of-life features.

It's got me wondering how many other great games I've overlooked over the years.

What older games would you say have genuinely stood the test of time? Especially ones you'd recommend to someone playing them for the first time.

Question Why does the hair in Dragon Age The Veilguard look so good?

Not here to defend or trash the game, but it poped back up on my radar recently. I saw some screen shots and I noticed the hair just looked better then the hair in a lot of triple A games that have come out after it. What did they do that the others didnt?
