D. Vaen's Postcards
Today's postcard came from Antigua, Guatemala. 🇬🇹
I've been thinking about how often we treat disagreements as problems that need to be solved.
Someone has to be convinced.
Someone has to change their mind.
And if neither happens, we sometimes assume the conversation went nowhere.
But I don't think that's always true.
I've had conversations where I left with exactly the same opinion I arrived with, yet understood the other person much better.
Sometimes hearing how someone reached a conclusion is more interesting than the conclusion itself.
You learn what matters to them, what they've experienced, or why something that seems obvious to you looks completely different from where they're standing.
Of course, understanding someone's perspective doesn't mean agreeing with everything they say.
It simply means recognizing that a conversation can have value beyond deciding who was right.
Perhaps we don't always need to win a discussion.
Sometimes understanding is enough.
“Understanding another person's point of view doesn't require abandoning your own.”

SLICK & HUSTLE | Things They Said — London
Max Slick and Keizer Hustle take a walk through London.
One appreciates the architecture. The other is increasingly suspicious of how politely everyone disagrees.
Neither has complained about the rain.
Yet.
