Discussion Doha shops refusing to sell to you unless you give them your phone number
Why are shops in Doha refusing to sell to you unless you give them your phone number?
A few days ago, I went to buy a gold bracelet at a store in Doha. I had the money, my ID, and my passport. Despite that, they refused to sell it to me unless I gave them my phone number.
Throughout the whole process, they kept asking for it. First, when I wanted to know the price. Then again after we agreed on the purchase. Eventually, at the payment stage, it became a condition: no number, no bracelet.
Why? Why does buying something from a shop mean I have to hand over my contact details?
This feels like an increasingly common issue with private companies and retailers here. We already deal with scam texts and calls, and I’m uncomfortable with how casually businesses collect our information without explaining why they need it, who can access it, or how it’s protected.
I’m not claiming this particular shop is selling anyone’s data. My concern is that every additional company holding it is another place where it could be leaked, misused, or accessed by someone who shouldn’t have it. Whether that happens through a security flaw or an employee abusing their access, the customer is left dealing with the consequences.
And the worst part is that you don’t really get a choice when they make it a condition of buying something. If there’s an actual requirement for a purchase like gold, explain what it is and why my ID and passport aren’t enough. If it’s for a customer profile, marketing, or loyalty points, I should be able to decline.
Has anyone else experienced this in Doha? Does anyone know whether a phone number is actually required for gold purchases, or whether this is just store policy?
Edit: I used an llm to layout the argument for discussion. That doesn't mean just because I used an llm that I don't care for myself or the elderly people in my community to be scammed. The goal of this post isn't to just complain or to find a solution. The goal of it is for us as a community to have a discussion on this real phenomenon that is new to this country. I'm 34 I was born and raised here and one thing about this place is that change always starts with the community not by mindless complaints. I hope we can discuss how we can get these companies to stop this abuse. One complaint by a Palestinian immigrant doesn't make a difference but a community of people aware of these businesses and shady practices and denying them access to their numbers as well as teaching the elderly and uninformed around us will really put a dent in all these spam calls we are all getting.

Rant Lusail Parking Situation
Hi guys,
We (employees working at a tower in Lusail) used to park in the Fifa free zones (the empty patches of land) but they have been closing one by one and the road side parkings are usually full.
Right now there are no more free zones available and the paid metro parkings will cost like 10% of our monthly salary.
The tower itself is also charging us about 700 a month to park, so we are a bit confused and lost on what to do. Parking further away is also not convenient due to the distance and heat.
Consider this as just a rant. It would have been lovely if the city was planned with more parking spaces in mind.

Discussion I feel lonely living in Qatar
It has been a month since I moved here, and honestly, I have never felt this lonely before.
Although this is not my first time living abroad, I don't know why Qatar feels so much heavier than the other countries I have lived in.
I have been busy working six days a week, with only 32 hours off each week, which leaves me with barely enough time or energy to do anything else.
I have absolutely no friends here (I don't count everyone at job as my friends), and because of my past experiences, I've developed trust issues that make it difficult for me to open up to new people.
I've also been diagnosed with depression, which makes adjusting more harder for me.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how make it less lonely for me?

Question A3 visa for Pakistani national green card holder
Hi everyone,
I have seen quite a few posts saying that Qatar is not issuing A3 visas to Pakistani citizens who hold U.S. Green Cards. Is this actually true?
I have already applied and am still hoping for some good news. Has anyone with a Pakistani passport and a U.S. Green Card recently received an A3 visa approval?
If anyone has any suggestions or personal experiences to share, I would really appreciate it.
Thank you in advance for your help!

Discussion Karak / Chai Places In Qatar
In a world rushing towards matcha and energy drinks, may you find people who slow down for a karak with you.
Anyway, what’s your favourite karak spot?
There’s a place in Matar called Lanka Restaurant, and honestly, they serve some of the best chai I’ve ever had. And when I say the best, I mean it’s not your typical karak or the usual condensed milk kind. It has its own taste, and it’s absolutely worth trying. They make it with Powdered Milk.
Give it a go if you’re around the area!
Also, drop your recommendations below. I’m always up for discovering a good chai spot. 👀

Question Has anyone reported late-night roadworks in Qatar?
Has anyone ever called Ashghal or the police to complain about noisy roadworks in a residential area late at night? Did they actually do anything or ask the workers to stop?
They’re digging right in front of our building, and it’s already 1 AM, but the work is still ongoing. Just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience and whether reporting it actually helped.
At this point, should I just consider it “music to my ears”? 😂

Question How can we redeem our Lulu happiness points?
Hi guys,
I believe the title is self-explanatory, but to clarify, Lulu has a “Happiness” thing that gives about 1% cashback when you buy stuff. I believe that I have reached a good amount and I wanted to redeem them.

Information Tiffin lady in Qatar
Hello everyone,
I am currently working a 9-5 job and find it incredibly difficult to cook home meals every day. Because I am always on the go, I struggle to eat healthy, which often results in eating low-quality meals or binging at night because I am not fully satiated during the day.
I initially wanted to subscribe to a curated fitness meal plan (like Calo or Dieture) to help me lose weight, eat clean, and increase my protein intake. However, these commercial corporate plans are highly expensive, ranging from QAR 1,500 to QAR 2,000 monthly. Honestly, ordering takeout every day or buying premium groceries doesn't even cost that much!
Because of this, I am looking for a budget-friendly alternative, such as a tiffin lady, a local mess service, or a home-cooked food business that can prepare and deliver healthy meals to my location on a monthly subscription basis. Of course, regular monthly payment will be provided, but I am working within a specific budget.
Update What a good weather😍
I took this photo exact at 11:36, i didn't feel hot as june or july

Question Need a help on what to do
So i recently (in August) bought a phone through oreedoo on installment , i got a message from their official app and i checked for eligibility using my qid and i was eligible and bought a new phone, the installment get added to my oreedoo postpaid bill every month and they only allow one device per id or customer
And i bought the phone on August 29 th and the bill for August was generated before it so the amount for the first installment was not added
But the next month September when the bill generated i saw 2 installment or doublt amount of monthly amount so i thought maybe its because one id for September and one for August as i bought the phone after the bill generated,so i didn't think of it and paid
But this month for October when the bill was generated i again saw the double amount of monthly installment
So i messaged the official oreedoo customer care WhatsApp number and raised my concern also called their customer care number and raised an issue
During the conversation they asked me to verify that if i have selected the number of installments and i checked and verified
Then he asked me to verify whether i have purchased 2 devices(Note: the oreedoo website said one device per id or customer so there is no way i can get 2) so i shared him my invoice and it showed one but he asked me to verify the bill for the October month and it shows i have 2 same devices under my name which i dont have
I dont mind paying for two devices if i had gotten two but i didn't
So has anyone else faced this issue ,if yes what did you do and ,if no does anyone know what to do

Question What’s the point of these frequent ticket checks in tram/metro?
I am genuinely baffled as to why they check tickets on metro and Lusail tram so often. You can only get on after passing turnstiles and there’s always someone so it’s not like you can jump them. I’m sometimes getting checked 4 times in a day, even twice on the same ride in the same train by different people. I’ve lived in cities where public transport was more expensive and would get checked few times in a YEAR.

Information Sharing a free tool I made that compares every Ooredoo and Vodafone plan. Turns out I was overpaying a lot
Got fed up trying to compare plans on Ooredoo and Vodafone’s websites, so I made this: baqatqatar.com
You pick how you use your phone and it shows you the cheapest plan that actually covers it, and how much you’d save compared to what you’re on now. Has monthly, prepaid and data only. Prices update by themselves every day from their sites.
Found out I’m paying around 11k a year more than I need to. Great feeling.
I initially made this for myself, but I thought I'd just share it with everyone else. So, it’s free, it has zero ads, it requires no sign up whatsoever, and it's not connected to either company.
Tell me if something’s wrong or missing. I'm still making improvements!
