Announcement Proton Drive roadmap: autumn and winter 2026 roadmap
Hey everyone,
We’ve just published our roadmap for autumn and winter 2026. Here’s what we’re working on for Proton Drive over the coming months.
Search
Improved search across all clients, covering more fields than just the file name on web and mobile.
End-to-end encryption makes this a hard technical problem, so improvements will roll out incrementally as they’re developed rather than all at once.
Performance and reliability
Earlier this year we rebuilt Drive around a single shared engine that handles uploading, downloading and encryption across all clients.
Ongoing work on speed and reliability across all apps.
Docs and Sheets
Focus on stability and reliability, plus:
- Dark theme
- Editing Sheets on mobile
- Page breaks in Docs
- ODT import and export in Docs
- Subscript and superscript in Docs
- Tables in Sheets
- Quick stats for selected cells in Sheets
More detail in the Docs and Sheets roadmap post: https://www.reddit.com/r/ProtonDrive/comments/1w77ee6/docs_sheets_whats_coming_before_2027/
Easy Switch from Google Drive
We’re making it easier deGoogle, so your files don’t have to be downloaded to a device and re-uploaded
macOS folder sync
Select any folder to sync on Mac, the same way you can on Windows today, with the same functionality on both platforms
Linux beta
We’re working towards releasing a beta of the official Proton Drive app for Linux
The initial launch will likely be headless daemon mode only: a sync engine that keeps a configurable list of directories up to date, the same way it does on Mac and Windows

Thank you and stay safe,

Is Proton Drive actually usable for daily work, or just cold storage? Seeking tips on slow speeds / offline files.
Hey everyone,
I'm currently trying to justify staying on Proton Drive to keep everything inside the Proton ecosystem, but I'm hitting a wall with usability.
Speeds: Uploads and downloads are noticeably slow. I know E2EE adds overhead, but simple file syncs stall way longer than expected.
Offline files: Having to mark files to be available offline individually (or managing folder syncs) feels pretty clunky compared to Google Drive or OneDrive.
For those using Proton Drive as their main cloud drive:
1. How are you coping with the speed constraints?
2. Do you have a setup or workflow that makes offline file access smoother?
3. Or are most people just using it strictly as "cold storage" for sensitive backups?
Would appreciate any workflows, tips, or honest reality checks!
