Discussion Got called a ‘baby molester’ in a video game for being Jewish. Asked the Discord for a rule. Thread locked in 27 minutes.
Long-time lurker, first real post. Not trying to start a war, just want to know if I’m crazy or if this is actually a thing.
Context: I’m a Jewish player from Israel, and I play PR because it’s one of the few games my potato PC can run. Was on Alliance, on a desert map, and hopped on Hamas just for fun (don’t @ me). Got absolutely cooked in chat. One guy called me a baby molester. That wasn’t “lol it’s PR, trash talk is part of the game.” That was just hate.
So I went to the Discord and posted in the rules suggestions channel. Basically: the rules have a whole section on racism, but there is literally nothing for antisemitism, islamophobia or homophobia. Pretty reasonable ask imo?
Another member backed me up and pointed out that f-slurs used to get you banned and now it’s “just a warning if the admin feels like it”. He said it happens in all-chat in game too, so it should be a ban.
What happened next:
- The thread turned into a circus within minutes. I joked about changing my name to “proud zionist” to see if I’d get banned (yeah, that was a bit of a poke, I’ll own it). People immediately said I was making assumptions based on nationality and religion.
- An admin said he can’t forbid people from saying dumb stuff, he can only act on it.
- Then it derailed into “how many admins are Arab”. I brought that up and it made things worse, my bad. I said ~80%, one admin said it’s more like 20%, and another admin said he doesn’t want to be called Arab.
- Several people said the whole thread was bait and trolling. One said “it’s fun.”
- Locked at 6:39 PM, about 27 min after I posted. The reason given was basically “people are dumb.”
Then in the other channel: the person who locked it said a PR community Discord isn’t the place for these topics, and that if you enforced a full anti-bigotry rule you’d have an empty server. The n-word rule exists “so we have the option to do something if it gets too bad.” The guy who backed me up called that lazy and said the existing rules aren’t applied consistently. The answer was that they ARE enforced, “just not how you like it.” After that it became an argument about HoG ban history and hackers seeding servers, and nothing on topic.
My take: I’m not asking for thought police. I’m asking for one clear rule: hate aimed at someone’s religion, ethnicity or sexuality gets the same consequences, no matter who it’s aimed at. Right now it feels like one specific word is bannable and everything else is vibes + admin discretion.
TL;DR: Jewish player got harassed in game, asked Alliance to add rules covering antisemitism/islamophobia/homophobia, thread got derailed and locked in 27 min, got told the Discord isn’t the place for this. Rules apparently exist but are enforced inconsistently.
