US Politics Rubio’s Athens speech got very different treatment from CBS, WSJ, CNN and AP. Should analysis pieces that sharply criticize a speech also give audiences the full speech?

On Oct 7, Secretary of State Rubio gave a long, ideologically ambitious speech at the Pnyx in Athens on Western civilization, nationalism, and the transatlantic alliance. I went through how major outlets covered it and found notable differences in emphasis.

How outlets framed it:

  • CBS News led with the core argument: the West should embrace “the unapologetic pursuit of national power.”
  • NYT focused on his call for Europe to “awaken” and reassert Western power.
  • WSJ editorial board called it “the speech of the year.”
  • Reuters covered the content and noted up front that he’s a potential 2028 contender.
  • AP covered the content, said it had presidential overtones, and flagged several historically questionable claims.
  • Washington Post framed it as a politician’s speech, down to the State Department’s crane-mounted camera.
  • Fox News covered the content but also said it sounded “campaign-ready.”
  • CNN ran Stephen Collinson’s analysis, which engaged the substance but was openly critical, calling the speech “jarring and contradictory,” plus a panel segment titled “Rubio’s speech reignites presidential speculation.”

Discussion questions:

  1. Nearly every outlet mentioned 2028, including Fox. Is speculation about a speaker’s political ambitions a legitimate part of covering a policy speech, or does it crowd out discussion of the argument itself?
  2. CBS and the WSJ largely presented Rubio’s argument on its own terms, while CNN, AP and the Guardian paired it with sharp criticism. Is one approach more appropriate than the other when covering a sitting Secretary of State?
  3. Should outlets that publish critical analysis of a speech also make the full speech easily available to their audience?
  4. Did the speech itself signal a meaningful shift in US foreign policy toward Europe, or was it mainly a restatement of existing “America First” positions?

30% of the country is in the cult. I doubt this will simply fade away.

30% of the country is in the cult.

That's the defeatist doomer way of saying "we outnumber them two to one."

That assumes the entirety of the remaining 70% is engaged and has come to the same conclusions.

Yeah, we have work to do. That's why talking about the 30% who don't agree is pointless. They're not coming around. Instead of presenting this small and destructive minority as some kind of immovable obstacle, take every opportunity to rally your own side.

You're confusing defeatism with realism. Things don't disappear after elections. The contradictions that lead to Trump have never been solved nor is there any serious opposition to the system that created Trump. An election is one step to a longer road. And I don't think most Americans are ready to take that road

This is even more clearly defeatist. You're not being "realistic", you're just not bothering to talk about how we might fix the problems you raise. You're exclusively raising how difficult it is.

To fix it requires building systems within the shell of the old. Picking up slack where the state is failing. Feeding people, educating people, etc.. this takes time. Time that we realistically don't have.

My questions to you:

Do you think the US at large is ready for a socialist revolution? And if so, what viable party is there to facilitate the revolution?

Do you think the US at large is ready to come to turms with giving black Americans reparations for the stolen labor extracted from their families during slavery?

Do you think the US at large is ready to honor the treaties broken with the indigenous Americans?

I'm in the trenches everyday. Educating children outside of the education system. Everyday I see kids demonstrate humanity. I am optimistic but I am also not an idiot. Blind hope kills people. The US is most likely cooked. 100 years of anti communism, four hundred years of racism have given the racial capitalist structure a very good weapon at deterring revolutionary energy. The psychological wage is powerful. It tell you you're not them, you're part of the in group. While still extracting your labor. You're going to have to dismantle racism and grow class consciousness while also providing material aid to the hyper exploited classes. You're going to need a rainbow coalition. While that the goal that I work towards and many other people in many different places all around the world work for. The chances of this happening in the US are pretty slim. We will literally need reeducation to fix a significant amount of the adult population. But I also don't view the US as the center anymore. China is a much more hopeful thing to look at. But again are you ready to accept China being more free than the US has ever been?

Buddy, touch grass. You've given up. You're going to sit on the sidelines while people who think more about solutions than problems take the lead in organizing and fixing the system. Take this useless bullshit about how there's no hope and shove it. If you're going to give up, do it quietly.

If I were to give up I'd quit my job where I'm understaffed, under paid, and under appreciated. But instead I try to make some of the most vulnerable children in the US have a safe place for a few hours before and after school. I'm an educated person could easily be a middle manager anywhere. But I chose to do something that matters and I understand why things are the way they are and I fight against that by organizing the working class in my immediate area. But fascism doesn't magically go away. It's an integral part of capitalism. To simply dismiss that fact is foolish. And to dismiss that, after winning against Fascism you have to then deprogram the society from fascism. You can't just say it'll disappear and not address the actual roots that cause Donald Trump. Or else you're just kicking the can down the road.

No one is saying fascism is going to simply disappear.

They are already fleeing the sinking ship, like rats.

You know there's a very good chance he's going to be POTUS in a couple years, yeah?

5

u/BitterFuture 3d ago

No. There is exactly zero chance he will ever be POTUS.

If he ever has the opportunity to run for President (presuming we continue to have meaningful elections), he will not ever win the support of racists who hate Hispanics.

If he ever has the opportunity to beg the emperor to name him the imperial heir (presuming this gang of criminals acting as a presidential administration achieves their goal and fully ends our democracy), the emperor will laugh at him - and perhaps send him to a dungeon for his presumption.

There is literally no path for him.

Well, if all goes well in Trump's own words... he will be "The last Republican President...".

u/sesamestix 3d ago

I don’t think there is. The negative effects of idiotic MAGA leadership are just starting and will only get worse.

Rubio tied himself to a sinking ship. And MAGA doesn’t like Hispanics. Adios.
