Here is a sample video from today. So its my first day doing a 7 step so it might just be that but i am consistently under by 1 foot even if I am move the run back. I tried a cattle gate but that didnt go well. Im gonna try more tomorrow but I was wondering if theres anything you see specifically or tips to get it right.

Tonight at practice my coaches had me move up a pole to the biggest one I’ve ever jumped on. For context, I’ve been using a 12’ 110 for the last 6 months, holding at about 10’2. Two practices ago we added a step to my run and moved to a 12’120 and raised my grip to about 11’3, which felt good. Tonight I “bent the shit” out of that pole so they put me on a 12’130 and told me to raise my grip to 11’6. I then proceeded to get stood up on my next 3 attempts. They said I was tentative on my first try and then super under on my next attempts but that this was going to be a good pole for me.
I understand why they moved my grip up, to essentially ‘match’ the stiffness of my grip on the smaller pole, but because I kept getting stood up, shouldn’t I move my grip down? Even though that would make the pole stiffer? I’m just a little shook that I couldn’t move this pole tonight so want to know what’s reasonable to try for next practice.

14’1” 160lbs old Spirit Pole (from 04).
Run is 7L at 102ft
Bar at 14’ which would be a PR match.
With these jumps is it safe to move up to a 14’7” or 15’ pole at states for the next height?

Club coach and former college vaulter just offering up tips for summer. There’s a lot of high school vaulters who get the itch for this sport and want to know how to get better until next season.
Don’t worry if you can’t vault all summer. No one should just jump year round. In fact, after your season is over take a few weeks to let your body recover from the season.
The biggest advice I can give to freshman and sophomores is just focus on becoming better athletes. Pole vaulters should be fast and powerful.
How do you become fast?
- Get in the weight room. If you can get a trainer, great. See if they can teach you cleans and jerks. If not, try to safely get into squatting and create a base of strength for yourself. Strong legs, strong calves, and a strong back and core. Lat pull downs, rows, and abs.
- Acceleration work on the track. Workouts that are running sprints from 20-50m. An example workout could be 2x20, 2x30, 2x40. The total distance run during these workouts are less than 400m-500m.
I share more at @nextlevelpolevault on Insta.

I weight 130lbs. I use a pole that's rated at 120lbs with a 21 flex number. 11'6" long.
Will I break this pole or am I okay to use it for 1 meet? My grip is about 10ft right now and I'm starting to bend the pole. I want to grip higher as the corssbar rises. But im afraid it'll break as the pole will bend more the higher I hold.

OK, here is the scenario we had today. My son is in 3 events that are all going on at the same time. He is down to the final 2 in high jump, checks out and goes over to PV and clears a height, then checks out to run hurdles. He returns to PV (6 minutes later), but the bar has not yet gone up so he checks out to jump a height in HJ with the intent to then check out and go back to PV. The meet director tells him that he can relax and finish HJ because they will hold the bar at PV for him. So he finishes HJ and returns to PV 6 minutes after the second check out. The coach running PV tells him that his 10 min time has elapsed (based on the first check out time) and he has forfeited all remaining jumps (note that in the 6 minutes he spent doing HJ, they moved the bar up and the two other jumpers both missed 3 times with my son returning right after the last miss). The coach declares the PV done. This is HS level in RI following NFHS rules. So the question is were all of the correct rules followed and the meet director accidentally screwed my son over? If the rules were not followed, could you cite the source?

Im 17 and a sophomore in highschool, and I want to get a scholarship for pole vaulting. Right now I vault 15'6. Realistically what are the chances of me actually getting a scholarship?

I am a new coach and have several athletes struggling with the mental side of pole vault. Especially on meet days. They will have a perfect practice, turn around and jump completely different at meets.
Is there anything you or a coach has ever said to you or done to help with the meet anxiety?
Or should I just let them work through it and not really say anything? I know every athlete is different but just wondering how athletes usually work through it and if there is anything at all the coach can do?

I apologize in advance if this is very helicopter mom-ish of me. My daughter is only in 8th grade, so obviously we're still fairly new at this (2nd season), its not very high stakes, and I know she needs to learn to figure things out on her own. But it's hard to not feel helpless/want to help.
She's been doing very well and loving it but suddenly for the past couple of days ... she just can't jump. She says she "literally just cant do it." Hasn't jumped once at practice. Scratches every time or stops trying completely. Monday was GREAT for her but nothing since.
Another boy on her team has been struggling with this for a month or so and it's been hard to watch :(
I wouldnt normally be too worried yet (maybe haha)...i imagine a good number of vaulters go through this at times?...maybe?... but she has states on Saturday 😐
I'm so excited for her to have this opportunity and I dont even care if she gets last place. But I think it'd be pretty soul/confidence crushing for her to travel up there and not even jump.
She isn't able to tell me anything that she thinks started it. She's not a big talker anyway. She says it is not nerves about states. Her leg hurt the other day but she said it isnt that today. She was crampy today but said it isn't that. As someone who hasnt pole vaulted im sure I could never grasp everything that goes into the mental component. One of her coaches is apparently very good at talking her through stuff usually but it isn't helping now. Her other coach said he tried to get her to start a shorter approach and work her way back but she has just completely shut down and wouldn't even try today.
I assume shes just spiraling internally. I asked her if she thinks she can have a better day tomorrow or if she has convinced herself she can't. She said she believes she can have a better day...so her head is at least still a little bit in it.
I know there is really not much that can be done in one day. Maybe im just venting. Or want to hear what kind of things you guys have gone through and gotten past. She'll probably either snap back into things in time or she wont. But I will take literally any advice. My overly sensitive mom heart is stressed for her 😅
