Anyone else only like Silk Soy Milk and dying with these prices?
I know that everything has gone up but this is just crazy š Iāve been waiting on a sale for weeks now so I can stock up but havenāt gotten one yet.
Unfortunately Silk is the only soy milk I love as a multi-purpose milk. Itās good in tea, coffee, cereal, for cooking, for baking. I like it so much that I will just drink a cup of it for the taste (sometimes with cookiesā¦..yes Iām an adult) and protein boost. Iāll happily use the Trader Joeās shelf-stable soy milk for baking and cooking but I donāt like it at all for drinking or using in tea, coffee, or cereal. The Whole Foods brand soy milk is vile imo. The EdenSoy soy milk is okay but almost as expensive as Silk. I donāt have an Aldi or a Grocery Outlet near me.
I am already constantly cooking, meal prepping, cleaning up, making my own bread and other vegan alternatives. I do not want to have to make my own soy milk every week š Literally just looking for commiseration here lol.
Unless I find an alternative that I like as much Iām just going to have to start cutting back.
ETA; Just realized I included the "Original" sweetened in my post though I always drink the Unsweetened. But they're the same price here at least!

Thank our grand leader for starting a war we didnāt need to be in. Diesel affects everything, including soy bean production
122
u/jspeq 5d ago
To add, we also have tons of soybeans rotting in the Great Plains, they couldnāt be sold due to a trade war.
Everything is completely backwards.

u/catkayak 5d ago edited 5d ago
Iām in the Midwest and I thought my eyes deceived me when I still saw soybeans in fields out here too. This reality is just plainly not being reported on, to the extent that it oughta be.
13
u/aknomnoms 5d ago
Iām honestly curious about this. Iād think farmers would hate to see food waste. Wouldnāt people buy it as feed? Or could they have a āfree - you pickā sign for the general public or advertise it to a food bank to help clear the fields?
What a waste otherwise.
Also, is there no group of people Trump hasnāt royally fucked over? Obvious exceptions are the billionaires and our long-standing foreign enemies, who all seem to be profiting handsomely from his decisions.
15
u/catkayak 5d ago
Not that kind of soy. Just like corn, there are different varieties of soy bean. This isnāt edamame style - you can eat it steamed- soybeans. These are for more industrial agriculture purposes, like making soy sauce, animal feed, soybean oil aka vegetable oil etc. These soybeans, have to be industrially processed in order to be used. So even for a mom and pop feed scenario - still doesnāt work.
Also USAID subsidized US farmers, to where a lot of what was domestically grown was bought and distributed by USAID, USDA, etc. This filters out to food banks, international food aid, etc. When those cuts were made early in 2025, we are currently seeing a long term ripple effect of that destabilization of US farmers and producers.
So while it is nice in theory, to imagine a āu-pickā sign for soybeans, itās not that simple. Farmerās also canāt write off those theoretical losses on loan payments, bills, etc - even if all the pieces lined up perfectly.
3
u/aknomnoms 5d ago
Thank you for the explanation!
Iām still trying to think of how to avoid letting the plants just die in the fields though. Maybe goats or some other grazing animal can be temporarily moved in? Animals get fed and give meat/milk, farmer gets paid at least a little, and the land gets fertilized.
6
u/FleshlightModel 5d ago
Right, that's why I'm thinking soy products are all still a product of gougflation.
I did get organic soy milk recently at my middle of the road grocer for either $2 or $2.50 per half gallon. Bought a few at that price.

I also only like silk, only unsweet, and generally refuse to buy other brands, because they're always worse, although recently started budging a little for whatever they have at the Asian market, which is pretty decent.
I buy mine at Walmart, and it's the only reason I go there, because they have it for 3.99 and everywhere else is a dollar more, at least. You can have Walmart ship to your house. I fucking hate Walmart, but they got me by the throat for this soy milk lol
And I too am an adult and buy nesquik syrup and drink a cup of choccy milk like every night š I'm trying to gain weight and chocolate milk is a good way of tricking myself into more protein.
14
u/threedogsplusone 5d ago
Walmart and other companies are tracking personal data to change prices for each person. I just found this about how some are finally fighting back:
13
u/gingerspell 5d ago
I'm not even seeing the unsweetened version at my local Walmart š
Chocolate soy milk is literally the best. I'll still be drinking it as an old person (if I can afford it...)

Check Target! Sometimes it goes on sale at Target under $5, i donāt shop target often but remember i got it before on sale - tbh i donāt drink a lot of straight soymilk or any milks actually
Also watch sales online like literally set a google alert for the shelf stable one
25
u/Low_Criticism4218 5d ago
silk really got us by the throat with that one. i remember when a half gallon was like 3 bucks, now i see 6.79 and my soul leaves body a little. at this point i just drink it slower and pretend it lasts longer

u/PankakkePorn 5d ago
Silk soy milk is also far and away my favorite brand and I donāt buy anything else. I just donāt think about it. We deserve some pleasures in life!
3
u/gingerspell 5d ago
You're totally right! I try to budget for it when I can. And I always use the whole carton so at least I'm getting my money's worth. But it's reeeeally hard to justify at this price.
12
u/chasew90 5d ago
Wow! I buy the unsweetened Silk exclusively. And it's regularly out of stock and it makes me rage. I've been complaining about it being $4.69, and $3.99 on sale. I'd be having a crisis at $6.79. I hate how expensive groceries are now.
4
u/gingerspell 5d ago
I buy the unsweetened exclusively, too! I just used the original in my photo by mistake, but the unsweetened is the same price š„ I'd love for it to be $4.69 here; enjoy that for as long as you have it! Sorry to hear it's often out of stock for you though. At least that hasn't been a problem for me yet!

Weird. Itās a lot cheaper in Canada. $4.99 cad
Problem is they replaced it with āproteinā branded milk which ostensibly has the same ingredients but is watery and doesnāt froth.

u/ttpdstanaccount 5d ago
It's 4.50, often on sale for 4 (2.80-3USD) and very occasionally in the $3 range where I am in Ontario. I'd only be buying it for like, baking on special occasions if I was paying 9.69CAD for it like OP isĀ

u/dubious_unicorn 5d ago
They ruined the unsweet a few months ago and now it's undrinkable. I buy West Life, which is shelf stable and $5 for 64 ounces. The only ingredients are soybeans and water.
5
u/gingerspell 5d ago
WestLife is $7.79 for 64oz at my local grocery. Just checked š¬
I know some people prefer the shelf stable milks with simple ingredients but personally I prefer mine fortified. And I've noticed a change in Silk but I don't dislike the new formula at all! To each their own of course.
2
u/Sweetie3600 5d ago
What did they change? That's what I drink and I'm not sure I have noticed anything.
4
u/dubious_unicorn 4d ago
If you read the reviews on the Silk website, tons of people have complained about it! The change was about 6 months ago.
https://www.silk.com/plant-based-products/soymilk/organic-unsweet-soymilk?bvstate=pg:5/ct:r
To me it tastes like wet cardboard now. The first time I bought the new formula, I thought it had gone bad. I find it undrinkable.

Omg yes. I just had this conversation yesterday. I have tried so many other non-dairy milks and the Silk Unsweetened is the only one I like to drink. I use less expensive stuff for baking and I have cut back on making things like matcha lattes. Just a splash in my black tea now.
4
u/gingerspell 5d ago
Yep we're the same. It's the only one I think is actually good-tasting, not just "tolerable." I use cheaper ones when I can for baking and what not but when I've put them in tea or used them to make a latte it's just ruined the whole thing. So many other brands have a weird plastic-like aftertaste to me š

if you have access to Costco, they have a very good kirkland brand soy milk that's still very reasonable. In fact they didn't carry it for about 8 months while they played hardball with the supplier to keep the price down.
2
u/gingerspell 5d ago
Does that come in unsweetened?
I checked out my online Costco selection (after learning from a commenter here that you don't actually need a membership for online orders) but I don't see any unsweetened options.

u/rakarsky 5d ago
I have only ever seen sweetened (original and vanilla) at Costco. Some regions apparently at least sometimes get an unsweetened option, but it's not Kirkland branded from any of the photos I have seen. (When the soy milk was marked as being discontinued, as was mentioned above, I was hoping they were switching to the unsweetened. But it was the same old same old when it came back.)

Making your own soy milk is really a pain unless you go for the fanciest machines that can grind the beans enough to not need a pulp filter.
Joyoung makes some of those, and Milkmade imports a generic branded version to the US.
5
u/gingerspell 5d ago
Yeah, I'd consider it if I get desperate enough, but I really don't need another thing to add to my weekly to-do list. I already have enough dishes to do in a week from cooking, meal prepping, making my own vegan parmesan, etc. etc. I'm kind of at my limit lol. Plus then there's the worry about how long it will actually keep in the fridge.

I've come to your thread here particularly hoping for advice on making soy milk. I also make soy Greek yogurt from the soy milk, so I don't keep the stuff around long enough for it to go bad, lol. I have a source of bulk organic soybeans, so making my own makes sense, but I'd like to find out what actually works.

u/OatmealkAndCampalope 5d ago
I bought one for about $60, a $7 bag of organic soy beans and havenāt looked back. Itās self-cleaning, has a timer, super easy. It came with a metal strainer, I just pour the milk through that and into my jar and itās done.Ā

7
u/tofuandklonopin 5d ago
Where do you live? (If you don't mind.) I'm in a low cost of living area (Ohio) and it ranges from 5.39 to 6.59 for the green/teal unsweetened one. It was 3.99 at target and Walmart until about 6 months ago. And Walmart discontinued it for some reason.
Add in the price of cereal, and it's like an irresponsible splurge to eat a damn bowl of cereal anymore š idk why I'm laughing.

2
u/No_Appointment6273 5d ago

I buy kroger private label simple truth soy and almond milks, its usually no more than $2.99. Major name-brand companies often sell their excess capacity to grocery chains for their private label stuff anyways so its usually the same. Walmart, costco, kroger, target, all the stores do this with their private label, and are usually way cheaper than silk. Sometimes silk goes on sale for a $1.99 though.

Like many I've bought so much plant based milk over the years.
Finally this year I bought a Chefwave Milkmade, and have made all my own plant milk ever since.
I like that machine because it's really easy to use, quick to clean, and doesn't waste anything so it's very cost effective.
I originally intended to make lots of soy milk with it, but after trying all sorts of recipes, my favorite turned out to be a walnut/cashew/rice combo.

u/chronic_pain_sucks 5d ago

3
u/Paradoxl1 5d ago
If you have access, the Trader Joeās unsweetened is pretty decent and is $4.
When I was living in a remote area Iād get a 6 pack of the silk tetra pack shipped to me, $15.
3
u/IndoraCat 5d ago
I'm so grateful Silk (original) is covered by WIC. I like the store brand soy milk as well, but it's nice to get the "good" stuff without worrying about the price tag.
3
u/awingedaugustlady 5d ago
I try to buy the store brand like Walmart has their better goods version which I like. If itās on sale I like Califia also but think regular price is about $7. If itās about $4-5 thats when I buy it. But Iām considering making my own. I just never have cause I worry about going bad too fast. I only use a little at a time.
2
u/gingerspell 5d ago
I just checked my local Walmart online and it looks like they don't even have the unsweetened version there. Also not seeing the Better Goods version at all! Maybe mine doesn't carry it.

u/Ok_Antelope_1953 5d ago
it's insane. soybeans blended with water and fortified with a few essential micro-nutrients should literally cost pennies per gallon. at this rate it's better to buy mature soybeans and make soymilk at home. you also get okara from which you can make burger patties, and you can fortify the milk with calcium carbonate.
2
u/angelwild327 5d ago
Since I bought a milk maker, I will never again buy plant milk.
The taste is great, so much cheaper just buying beans, you donāt even have to soak them in my machine, but I do.
All it takes to make about 5 cups of milk is a small amount of soy beans or whatever ingredient youāre using and water, and in 30 minutes you have fresh milk, with minimal straining.
2
u/cheesemakesmehot 5d ago
Do you have a Walmart near you? My Walmart charges $2.86 for their better goods brand soy milk

I bought a ānut milk makerā machine a few months ago bc my husband was spending an absurd amount on almond milk, and it has definitely paid for itself. We make cashew milk at least weekly and I make fresh soy milk whenever I crave it. It grinds and boils, the nut milks take about 15 minutes and the soy about 40.
A giant bag of cashews is like $17 at Costco and lasts months.

I usually have soy milk in my shake and I honestly canāt tell the difference between Whole Foods, Trader Joeās and Silk, I just get the cheapest one every time.
They taste different? Like how?

I've been lucky enough to find the silk soy milk at my local grocery outlet. I drink it quick enough for the sooner expiration date not to be an issue.

Sad. I've resorted to only drinking walmarts better goods soy milk. Surprisingly decent

We switched from Silk to whatever soy milk Aldi sells, except for the rare times soy goes BOGO at Publix.

I love Silk. I usually find it for $2.99-$3.99 depending on the store and if there are any sales

I donāt buy Silk products anymore, but luckily for me HEB organic soy milk is $2.85 for a half gallon and is just as good.

I saw a Shota Nakajima video on IG about turning tofu into soy milk. You could try that?

I had stopped buying them because they make import from the US. But recently I see them stating that it is made locally from Canadian soybeans so buying them.
Btw, where exactly are you buying in the US? I checked Walmart.com prices and they are almost on par with Canadian prices of about $5 (both dollars) per half gallon.

Whenever I think of how pricey some of the food I buy is I look at how much meat costs and I feel better.

Yup, and could no longer find this and the organic reliably at the store so I gave up in them.Ā Now using shelf stable oat & almond milk from Costco.

If you like the green box as well the shelf stable ones can be had by the case for slightly cheaper overall.

That's insane, the organic unsweetened version is 3.38 at my HEB. But that price wouldn't fly here, everyone's poor and it would just sit on the shelves š¬

I would never pay that price, thatās insanity.
I get store brand soymilk for less than $3

Go to their website and sign up for emails. They will send you a $1 coupon every now and then. If you know someone who does coupons from the paper, ask them ri keep an eye out for Silk.Ā

I'm in Canada and commonly get two for $7, although regular price is around $4.50 CAD for one. Where are these prices?

Iāve changed to their almond milk and the prices are okay around here. Kroger stores.

I gave up somewhere around 4 dollars a carton and make my own now. Way cheaper, less packaging waste. It is kinda a pain to make so I don't make it every week now.

I like the Your Good Foods organic unsweetened soymilk from Costco. Less than $10 for a case of six quarts, no refrigeration required and tastes good.

I just buy Trader Joe's shelf-stable soymilk. If it's very cold, it's fine for drinking for me.

What I really miss is dollar tree west soy. Aldi was reasonably priced.
I actually got a self cleaning soy milk machine though. Is it better? Absolutely not. But itās on demand I can cook with it, drink it, put it in my cereal. It has paid for itself. With a little effort Iām sure I could make it silk (just add a couple of things.)
Food for thought but I personally would not do it if it were not brainless and convenient.
If you go that route get a French press. Let it sit for a little bit so most of the grit sinks down, press it down and you have grit free soy milk until you get to the very last but you can throw it away when you have just a couple table spoons left anyway.
Not āthis is itā suggestion. Itās definitely a way!

Do you have a Walmart? Itās 4.57 here. But I prefer Whole Foods brand plus itās only 2.79 (they recently increased from 2.39). Which is unbeatable for organic especially

I really like Costco's soy milk. Granted you have to buy a case of it, but it's shelf stable. It comes in plain and vanilla.Ā
