Hi all!
I'm u/ImOkNotANoob, the lead mod here on r/Pigeon. I mostly handle backend moderation, automod, reports, modmail, and general behind-the-scenes bits, which is why you might not have seen me around that much.
Just wanted to post a quick reminder since we've seen an increase in this recently: please tag posts as NSFW if they contain gore, visible injuries, blood, wounds, severe illness, or anything else graphic involving pigeons.
This especially applies to medical advice posts. We absolutely understand that people often post in a panic because they’re worried about a bird and need help quickly. That’s fine, and nobody is in trouble for asking for urgent advice. But graphic images can be upsetting for other users, especially when they appear unexpectedly in their feed. We also want to keep on Reddit's good side, and they've been known to have problems with subs that don't enforce this!
Thanks everyone, and thank you as always to the people who jump in with helpful advice for sick or injured pigeons. We’re proud to be the biggest pigeon community on the internet, and it’s the members here who make this place such a useful and helpful resource.

Hello everyone. I’m looking for advice from people who have experience caring for pigeons with suspected PPMV-1, commonly known as pigeon paramyxovirus or “twisting disease.” Has anyone dealt with a similar case and can share what genuinely helped their bird?
How I found the pigeon
I found this pigeon outdoors early on a cold Friday morning last week and brought it home. On the first day, it stood almost completely motionless, like a statue, with its head pulled back towards its body and its beak pointing upwards. It showed no interest in its surroundings, did not eat or drink independently, but could remain standing on both feet. Its droppings were green with a white portion.
How its condition has changed
On the second day, I started hand-feeding it wheat grains by placing them into its beak. I gave approximately two teaspoons per feeding, around three times a day. Its swallowing reflex was present.
After a few days, the droppings changed from green to brown, roughly the colour of wheat, with a white portion.
On the third day, I switched to a thin porridge made from ground wheat and rolled oats, mixed with water. I feed it using a syringe without a needle, approximately twice a day, giving one full medium-sized syringe per feeding. I do not yet know the exact volume in millilitres. I have also been adding two tiny granules of Saf-Levure active dry baker’s yeast because I read that it contains B vitamins.
Its current condition
Over the past few days, the pigeon has become noticeably more active. It has started walking, looking around, and flapping its wings. Its head position has improved considerably. It even attempted to take off, but could not lift itself off the ground.
However, several problems remain:
- It sometimes walks in circles. I noticed this happening more frequently yesterday and today.
- It cannot reliably peck at grains on its own. It occasionally tries but misses. When I offered it wheat before its morning feeding, it showed no interest.
- On one occasion, it touched the top of its head against the floor and held its head in an abnormal position for a few seconds. Afterwards, it began looking around again and turning its head from side to side.
- It can walk around, although not always willingly, and shows interest in its surroundings.
- It becomes frightened when I reach towards it, makes a plaintive squeaking sound, and sometimes tries to peck my hand.
- It does not look underweight, and its feathers appear generally intact. Since I found it, it has lost approximately two large feathers and a few small ones.
- Its swallowing reflex is still present.
What I suspect
Based on symptoms I have read about, videos I have watched, and discussions on forums, the condition seems consistent with pigeon paramyxovirus (PPMV-1). The symptoms that concern me most are the abnormal head position, poor coordination, walking in circles, and missing grains when trying to peck.
However, there has been no laboratory testing, so this is only a suspected diagnosis. I understand that other conditions can cause similar neurological symptoms.
Why I am caring for it at home
The veterinary clinic in my town does not accept birds. The places that might be able to take it are too far away for me to reach, and I have no practical way of getting there.
I am also concerned about what might happen if I surrender a wild pigeon with suspected PPMV-1. I am not its owner; I simply found it outdoors and wanted to help it. I worry that it might be euthanised rather than given a chance to recover.
Given these circumstances, caring for it myself seems to be the only realistic option available to me at the moment. I am trying to do this as responsibly as possible and would appreciate guidance from people with relevant experience.
Questions for people who have dealt with similar cases
Has anyone cared for a pigeon with similar symptoms? Did it recover, and how long did recovery take?
What care methods or feeding approaches genuinely helped?
Is a thin porridge made from wheat and rolled oats suitable as a temporary food when a pigeon cannot peck properly? Are there safer alternatives made from ordinary household ingredients?
Could the change in droppings from green to wheat-coloured brown be related to its diet?
Are there signs that can help distinguish PPMV-1 from other causes of poor coordination when laboratory testing is unavailable?
Could you identify from the attached photo whether this is an ordinary feral pigeon or possibly a domestic or fancy pigeon with unusual colouring?
I would be very grateful for reliable advice and first-hand experiences. If you recommend a particular food, supplement, or feeding method, please include the exact product name and, if possible, a source or explanation. I do not want to experiment and risk harming the bird.
If you live in the Grand Est region of France and are willing to take this pigeon in to help it recover or provide proper veterinary care, please contact me. I would be happy to hand the pigeon over to someone who can give it the medical attention it needs. Please reach out to me if you can help. Thank you!
I have attached a photo of the pigeon. Thank you to everyone willing to share their experience.

I’ve had a terrible couple of days but feeding the pigeons brought me so much joy and always helps me feel calm.

This is Gecks. We do this and s/he does not wing slap at all. It does wing flutters the whole time (i know that's not always indicative of happiness.)
But Gecks doesnt fly away, flies to me, perches on me etc.
Overall a great pet and sweet and intelligent bird!
Please let me know what this looks like to y'all 🥹 thank you!

Found this green pigeon fledgling under my parked vehicle yesterday.. it dropped on to the ground most probably due to dehydration and heat stroke
It's actively drinking water and took some bites out of the guava. Hoping he gets his energy back and gets released in the wild in some days at polo forest. Though uniting with the same flock is not possible, we will find a suitable flock that this individual can settle with...

Getting married this Saturday and I was in desperate need of a discoball. My partner 3D printed a pigeon and I spend hours sticking tiny mirrors. I think this might the best thing we ever created. 🪩 ✨ Can’t wait to see it shine Saturday evening!
We also made a cardboard cut-out of our housepigeon Herbert since he can’t attend in person, so people can take pictures with him in the Photobooth. Hope it’s ok for me to share my creation here!
Edit: included pictures of housepigeon Herbert in the comments!
Edit 2: thank you all so much for all the lovely comments! We’re very excited to see the discoo pigeon spinning around and see the reactions of our guests ✨

I heard a bunch of crows outside, must’ve been like 50 of them flying around. And I wondered why they were being so noisy, I went out to leave them some monkey nuts (usually it’s just the jackdaws I feed here - never seen this many crows).
But when I went outside I saw this little pigeon running and trying to get away, and they ran into my garage. I’m not sure if one of the crows was trying to kill them?
They’re now sat on my garage door and have been for about 3 hours. They did bleed quite a bit, have a little puddle maybe 2 inches across on the floor, but it’s stopped bleeding.
I’ve left them some water and seeds/peanuts on the door, but I don’t think they’ve touched either. I presume they’re still terrified.
Is there anything else I should be doing?
Thanks!

I’ve been feeding the pigeons near me with safflower seeds for awhile now, and I’ve gotten familiar with this one who needs a wire removed from her foot badly. it looks so swollen and painful and she really avoids putting weight on it with a bad limp.
I know de stringing pigeons isn’t uncommon and I’ve read a few guides, but even if I could catch her, the string is wrapped so tightly I don’t know how I could cut it without hurting her. She’s getting comfortable with me though, which is nice. any advice welcome!
EDIT: I genuinely can’t thank you all enough for the advice. I’ve been a lurker on this sub for a year or so now for the cute pigeon pics, but only recently moved to into a city. this situation is depressingly common, as I’ve learned recently, but I have a mini catch and release kit now (thanks to all your guys’ help) and will update when possible. ❤️

I've been trying to track down this pigeon image I found on pinterest, with no luck. It's such a pretty bird, but I have no idea what type of coloration or wing pattern it is. It looks similar to lacing patterns you'd find on chickens, but searching that also lead nowhere. Any help would be appreciated!

Hello fellow pigeon lovers! I know very very little about birds, and have come seeking advice!
I have a pigeon that is now living on my balcony behind some totes (one full of birdseed, as I enjoy feeding the local birds, and the other with potting mix) tucked beside my outdoor couch. He’s quite a decent sized buddy and seems oddly comfortable with people. The first time we really saw him, he flew up to me, my fiancée, and my best friend as we were hanging out on the balcony and just kind of vibed with us for quite some time. He has a little metal anklet on his right leg with what looks like orange lines on it (no idea if that’s relevant).
I am a top tier animal lover and would LOVE to befriend this little guy, especially if he/she is nesting on my balcony which I suspect he might be (found a small scrap of metal wire tucked behind the totes where he’s been hiding that I know was not out here before). I’ve been offering him some small seeds and today (as i’m typing this actually) offered some small mealworms so he has a bit more protein with a little birdbath coming soon!!
He has been dubbed Big Mac (or Mr. Macaroni as I call him sometimes) and i’d like to attempt to befriend the little dude. He’s gotten quite close to me on his own without any pressure, so i’m hoping we can be buddies one day!! Any advice on food, shelter, and anything else I can provide him to make him more comfortable would be greatly appreciated!

Attached a photo of her when she was looking a bit better!
By some miracle of timing, I went out to check to see if she’d returned and she was sat looking ill & sorry for herself in her corner. When I looked down, the rehabber turned up and asked if I was the one trying to help her! I quickly used à towel to put her in a box, and took her downstairs. It was canker apparently. Now she’s in the care of someone who knows how to treat it, and hopefully she’ll go on to live a long & happy pigeon life!
I honestly cannot tell you how happy & relieved I am. ❤️
Thank you all for caring and thanks especially to the wonderful lady who took her off my hands!

About a week ago two babies hatched on my balcony. This is the second clutch from this pigeon pair I’ve been watching and it’s been fun getting to see the chicks grow so much each day!
Unfortunately, today when I left for work I noticed one of the babies was on the sidewalk and no longer alive. Then when I came back I saw the second baby a few feet away from the nest on my balcony, also deceased. We haven’t had any unusual weather and the chicks didn’t look injured, so I’m not sure what caused it.
Since then, I’ve seen the bird I assume to be the mother come and stand next to the dead baby on the balcony. She doesn’t interact with it or touch it, just stands near it for a few minutes. It’s really off putting to see the dead animal, but at the same time I don’t want to interrupt the adult’s possible grieving process by removing it? It seems cruel to scoop it up in a plastic bag to rot in. Not sure if anyone else has dealt with similar or has advice.

My two lesbi-hens are incredibly in love and spend many hours of the day cuddling and cooing at each other.
2 weeks ago both of them laid a clutch of eggs (4 altogether). They sat and eventually abandoned their eggs a week later.
Now, here is my concern, one of them has already laid another egg. I don't want to risk any health issues, so what can I do to ensure that they're not losing any essential nutrients? My biggest fear is egg binding.
I add grit to their feed and a supplement for gut health.
