Let me say first that I started the show less than two weeks ago and I was incredibly enamored by the first two seasons- each episode essentially functions as a biting one-act play about chasing your dreams past their prime, filled with caustic irony and scrappy optimism.
Season three certainly recreates some of that magic, even if it's not as sharp and a little imbalanced. My main gripe is that suffers from the same indecisiveness of other revivals, where it's not sure if it's utilizing this extra season to properly wrap everything up or expand it for future outings.
I had gone into season three with the expectation of finality in a self-contained story, but the creators seemed unsure if this was a "one and done" or they were possibly going to be renewed. For a show that had such a pithy way of expressing its characters, many of the arcs are slight, caught in an awkward space between a definitive conclusion and teasing what's possibly in store.
The least impacted by this issue is obviously Henry- his decision to stay felt like the perfect, bittersweet resolution to his journey in the show. But then the whole tag at the end with Casey's return was a frustrating red herring. I thought the whole point of this long-belated third season would be to undo the inadvertent cliffhanger the show was forced to end on after it was originally canceled with season two.
Idk maybe I should be grateful that season three was able to happen against all odds. I enjoyed spending time with these characters again- I just wish it felt more meaningful.
