PSA: REPORT ALL AI DO NOT INTERACT

I just removed a graphically violent AI slop video involving a fake cocktoo being murdered. I expect this to happen again.

THEY AREN'T REAL.

PLEASE for the love of all that's good, if you run into a violent or suspected AI slop post, DO NOT INTERACT WITH IT. Report it. Report it. JUST REPORT IT.

Do NOT give it engagement, do not try to talk to the person, YOU CAN'T CONVINCE PEOPLE NOT TO DO THIS. For these kinds of posts, any engagement is considered good engagement. Even downvoting and condemnation is engagement. DO NOT.

Let your mod team handle this.

Rule 1: Be civil and respectful. What does that really mean?

Hello /r/parrots community! It’s your friendly neighborhood mod team here.

This sub doesn’t have too many rules, but perhaps the most important is to be civil and respectful towards others. We do not tolerate rudeness or personal attacks, regardless of context. You may ask why we take this rule so seriously.

While it’s never a bad idea to just generally be nice, we also have this rule for a very important reason: to help people take better care of their birds. How, you may ask? We strive very hard to keep this community a place where people feel comfortable asking questions so they can receive feedback.

We recognize that people feel very strongly about parrot husbandry, and that seeing birds in conditions that are not ideal can be difficult, but we also know that making attacks or being snarky doesn’t help anyone. Instead, it makes people defensive or nervous to ask questions. When we fail to foster a community where people can look for advice, the parrots lose. Every time.

Our general rule of thumb is this: you shouldn’t say anything online that you wouldn’t say in person to someone you know. Remember that there is a human on the other end of the exchange you’re having. If you’re disagreeing with them, be constructive and kind. Give the sort of advice you’d like to receive. Remember that you may be talking to people in tough situations, or a kid, or someone who has been given outdated information.

Very importantly, if someone violates this rule in their response to you, do not respond in kind. Instead, please report the comment.

That report button is one of the most important tools we have as a community! We check threads all the time, but with a constant stream of new content, it’s always possible for us to miss something.

We ask that you please hit that report button if you believe someone is violating the rules. The moderators review each and every post or comment that gets reported, and we will take action as appropriate. You can also reach our team via modmail if you have an issue.

We appreciate your help keeping the subreddit friendly and welcoming. We are grateful to everyone who contributes their time and experience to help people learn about parrots, to everyone who asks for help when they need advice, and to the folks who share their wonderful birds with us!

All the best,

The /r/parrots mods

Cockatoo at friends house

Hi all,

I know nothing about birds so looking for opinions. I went to my friend’s house that lives with their Mom and they own this cockatoo. The brother actually owns him but has moved out and has a baby. No one in the family likes him but the brother doesn’t want to give him away. I don’t think they are caring for him properly.

The family keeps him under this blanket all day in his cage. They removed the blanket because I asked to interact with him. He would shake a lot then I played calm classical music and he would stop shaking. I thought he was cold or nervous, because the house is cold.

Almost overnight he developed this lump, and I don’t think his feathers should be missing under his belly. Anyone have commentary on this?

My budgies won’t stop squawking unless I turn on SpongeBob?

I left for work and asked my mom to turn on the tv for my birds and she turned on SpongeBob and said something along the lines of “I think they like SpongeBob” I shrug it off as a joke until I noticed they wouldn’t stop squawking at me in the morning for no reason. I thought they wanted different veggies or something but they kept doing it. I eventually turned on SpongeBob and they INSTANTLY stopped and started making there happy tweeting sounds. This is so funny to me

WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO HER?

Is this supposed to be her moulting?

A little bit context, she is Rio, around 6-7 months of age. I have been away from home for 2 weeks because of my university and I came back hone yesterda. When I left, she had some feathers missing on her hair and a few pin feathers kicking in, I assumed she must be moulting because she never did her baby moult. And now she looks like this, there are some feathers missing under her wings too but she doesn't like to be handled. I have looked up PBFD, and ruled it out myself as it was stated as "highly contagious", but she's been living with my older birds for quite some time now and they all look beautiful. I am wondering what it could be. Her diet consists of veggies, mixed seed and fruits.

I am very scared, I don't know what it could be. Does anyone had similar experience they wanna share? There are no avian vets and general vets are not an option as one of those monsters killed my baby bird due to wrong dosage of meds. Any help would be appreciated!

Advice needed: raising a 16-week-old Eclectus – flying to my head, boundaries and biting

Post image
• Upvotes

Hi everyone! I have a 16-week-old male Eclectus parrot named Gideon. He is still settling into our home, and I’d really appreciate practical advice from people who have raised a young Eclectus themselves.

Gideon is very social and seems to have a clear preference for me within our family. He feels safest with me and steps up onto my hand very easily, so we already have a good connection in that sense.

However, when he is out of his cage, he frequently flies straight to my head or tries to climb onto my shoulder, even when I want him to stay on his play stand. I don’t want him on my head or shoulder at this stage, because I don’t fully trust him around my face yet. I’m still learning to read his body language and don’t know how he might react if he gets overstimulated or decides to bite. I’m particularly concerned about a bite to my face, nose or ears (earrings/piercings).

I’ve tried calmly returning him to his stand, but he often comes straight back to me. This can turn into a repeated cycle, and I’m struggling to teach him that he can be near me without constantly landing on me.

Another challenge is that he can be quite boisterous and excitable on some days, while being much calmer on others. I’ve tried a variety of treats to find something he really values, but food rewards don’t seem to motivate him particularly strongly. Sometimes he is more interested in getting to me than in the treat itself, which makes training a little difficult.

I also have three children, so my goal is to build a safe, positive routine that works for the whole family. I want him to remain fully flighted and learn to fly to me when invited, rather than feeling that he can land on my head or shoulder whenever he wants.

I really want this to work, both for Gideon and for our family. I’m committed to helping him learn, but I feel I need some practical guidance on how to teach him the foundations: boundaries, settling on his play stand, appropriate ways to interact with me, and managing his excitement without damaging our bond.

I’d especially love to hear from people who have been through this stage:
- How did you teach your young Eclectus to stay on a play stand instead of repeatedly flying to you?
- How did you set boundaries around your head and shoulders without making your bird afraid of you or damaging your bond?
- What did you do when your bird wasn’t particularly food-motivated and seemed more interested in physical contact than treats?
- How did you teach the difference between flying to you on cue and landing on you whenever he feels like it?
- Is this kind of behaviour and variation in excitement typical at 16 weeks, and what realistically helped you manage it?

I really want this to work, both for Gideon and for our family. I want to guide him properly during these early baby and toddler stages so we can build a strong foundation for his adolescence and adult life. I’m worried about unintentionally teaching him habits now that could become difficult to change later, or making mistakes at this important stage that could negatively affect his development.
I know he is still very young and has a lot to learn, which is exactly why I want to get things right from the beginning. I’m committed to helping him learn, but I need practical guidance and clear foundations to work with, rather than constantly guessing whether I’m handling things correctly.
I’d really appreciate honest experiences and concrete advice from people who have raised an Eclectus through these stages. I’m not looking for perfection, and I’m not looking for a quick fix.
I’d genuinely appreciate honest experiences and concrete, practical steps for teaching him a solid foundation, especially from people who understand Eclectus behaviour in a family home.

Thank you!
(Yes, this was constructed using AI. English is not my native language so I needed a bit (or a lot of help ;)) to get my point across!

Did you know that minoxidil is extremely toxic to pets?

I’ve been using minoxidil for 3 months without knowing how dangerous it is. I wash my hands after applying it and use it before bed, but my parrots love sitting on my shoulders, playing with my hair, and I sometimes scratch my scalp without thinking.
Now I’m considering stopping it altogether because I can’t realistically wash my hands every time I want to touch my birds or my hair. I’m honestly terrified of accidentally poisoning them.

New phobia unlocked 🫠

Closing Eyes?

Today I captured a good example of what my lovebird does whenever I move my face very close to his, whether it be to kiss him, to cuddle him, or to just look at him. He especially closes his eyes for awhile if my face is touching his or he is sitting on my shoulder. What does this mean? Fear?
I was not holding him tightly, so why was he closing his eyes for so long.

Do only Meyers parrots get “fluffed up” like this? I’ve had two Meyers in my life and they both did this. But I’ve never seen another parrot, or bird in general do it….

My cockatiel went from "not sure about this" to "GET OUT, THIS IS MY BATH" 😂

This was Bells' very first bath!

Bells spent ages watching our budgies, Sunny and Moon, bathing. Then came the cautious approach, a little inspection, and a lot of hesitation.

Finally decided to give it a try... but first, Sunny had to go 😂

And once Bells started bathing, all that hesitation was gone. Apparently the bath belongs to Bells now lol.

I try to buy treats for her because I want to train her so she doesn't get bored, but she's not interested in any treats I bought so far and is only interested in licking my skin and biting my fingers, how do I get her to at least stop licking me because I feel like it's gotta be bad for her

Head shaking??

Does anyone know why my lovebird keeps flickering/shaking her head?

I’m going to take her to the vet, because her ear seems to be irritated maybe? She keeps doing it like every 2 seconds, and has been doing it ever since I got her I’d say.

Other than that she’s hormonal and behaves «normally» :-/

Looking for a reliable online avian vet for my budgie

• Upvotes

Hi everyone!

Unfortunately, there are no avian vets in my area, so I’m looking into online veterinary consultations for my budgie.

Has anyone here used an online avian vet or a video consultation service for birds? I’d love to hear about your experiences, good or bad, and any you’d recommend.

Thanks in advance!

Escaped conure returned home!

Imagine this…

You’re a teacher, you just dropped your students off to their music class- as you are walking back, a flurry of beating wings and scratching nails lands on your shoulder- you freak out- is it a huge insect?!?

Then it chirps

It’s a freaking green cheeked conure!!!

This is what happened to my sister in law!

He was immediately friendly and well behaved, he cuddled up to her neck, he drank the water offered to him, and ate the conure appropriate pellets they went and bought for him.

Another teacher had a vintage round cage they were using for decoration, so he was put in there for safety until school ended- After school she bought him a small flight cage, even though the situation was temporary we didn’t know how long he’d be here, we didn’t want to keep him in a cage type known to hurt and distress birds.

As I used to have birds I took over his care once home, he hung out in my room free range until bedtime, happily staying near me, cuddling on my shoulder grinding his beak contently, hopping across my desk nibbling at my keyboard inquisitively.

He was extremely well behaved, only being as ‘cheeky’ as a green cheeked conure is known to be… Trying to nibble the moles off my face, chewing up paper left out on my desk, helping himself to MY cup of water, flicking the skin of a grape everywhere because he only wanted to devour the fleshy insides… that SAVAGE…

My sister in law found a post mentioning a missing bird that fit his exact description, green cheeked conure, pineapple colouration. Pictures attached looked exactly like him. After some back and forth it was confirmed this little bird was a runaway named Warhol, he had been missing for 3 days!

Missing birds rarely get found, let alone found 3 days later!

I’m so glad it all worked out, I honestly kind of miss him! But he has a loving family that im sure he missed even more!

Thanks for the visit little Warhol… I better not see you again!!! No being an escape artist!!!

Shaved my beard

Just reminiscing about the time I shaved my beard, and I lost my birds trust for weeks. Went from Grizzly Adams to clean shaven and it blew my birds mind, she hated me for it for like 2-3 weeks. We’ve been back on good terms for some time now…I haven’t grown the beard back. It got me thinking, do you think your bird thinks you’re a bird? Or do they know you’re a human? My bird likes two people, and is either afraid of, or hates everyone else. She even knows it’s me when she can’t see me, if there’s even someone new in the house in a different room she can tell and gets all quiet.

Plumhead in the garden

He jumped out of his cage when I opened his cage door. This was the first time my plumhead( wing disability) put his foot on the soil( 6 months back). He was nervous and fearful of his surroundings. I was there for him, the entire time he was out of the cage. I was an idiot to assume that there were no raptors or reptiles nearby. Thankfully, he returned to his cage safely. I put his life in danger. 😔
