Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I just got my first ps3 and its a fat and its been only setting on the menu. Now I've heard stuff about the fat version being loud but is this normal?

It appears I have a jet engine instead of a ps3

Clean it out dust it’s best you
Can but day one ps3
Owner ( it still works) it’s loud as hell…. Also was hot as hell. I really love the look of the fat ps3 but the slim for all the hate just works.

If it’s dusty it will work harder so I would recommend cleaning it out first it could resolve the loud fan

Best to open it up, replace thermal paste, delid (if possible) new thermal pads and good cleaning will help the fan noise. As mentioned, day 1 PS3's are destined to fail unfortunately.

yeah the thermal paste replacement alone makes a huge difference on the fats

Hard to tell over a short video with nothing to compare the audio to, but these consoles are generally pretty loud. Mod it and check temps.

Might be your RSX ready to go out

how does fan noise have anything to do with the rsx?

The PS3 adjusts fan speed based on CELL and RSX temperatures, so there is a connection. I jumped into conclusion about it being RSX but it could be a temperature sensor issue, poor heatsink contact, or fan control settings. If there system is modded, I'd check the temperatures and syscon logs before anything.

unless you have artifacting or freezing then its just a dirty dusty console. even then, fat ps3s just run kind of loud so from what youve sent that isnt out of the ordinary. its not like its running full blast, more like its at 30% fan speed or so

yes… but you stated the rsx is failing because the fan is marginally loud? i dont see the connection between that

Fan behavior can indicate thermal issues, but it doesn't necessarily mean the RSX is failing, which is why I acknowledged jumping to that conclusion. I was suggesting a possibility, not making a diagnosis. Without temperature readings or syscon logs, there's simply not enough evidence to determine what's actually going on. OP even mentioned they haven’t modded their PS3 yet.

yeah and i think recommending modding is reasonable. im with you on that. checking syscon logs with ps3toolset is also a good idea to see the history which you also mentioned

Using webman the cpu is sitting at 76c And rsx at 56c

whats the fan speed? since you can see it exactly now

80% and the ps3 is on the side and it doesn't have that much suction

1

u/Lopsided-Frosting-12 21h ago

Edit it put the fan on 80 using the dynamic fan thing its now on 72 for cpu and 53 for rsx

76 at 80% is not normal at all. clean it out first and replace the thermal paste
