There are spots open for our free Merch Tour in Umeda and our website is up. Check it out and come join us.

The Umeda underground labyrinth beneath Umeda Station can be difficult to navigate. GPS cuts out, signboards can be baffling, and it’s remarkably easy to get turned around between all the 5 kilometers of basement concourses and department store annexes. Hitting more than a few shops in an afternoon can be difficult. We will navigate you through it all to maximize your Anime, Gaming, Kawaii merch shop experience.

Following our first test run, we're holding another practice edition of our Umeda Underground Merch Tour on Tuesday, September 22nd. We’re looking for a small group of anime, gaming, and kawaii culture fans (both visitors and locals welcome!) to experience the route and give us feedback.

Testing a New Format: more Exploring or Shopping

Our first test run was a fun, high-energy overview where we scouted practically every character and hobby shop reachable through the underground concourses. It was a great way to map out the sheer scale of the labyrinth, but for this run, we’re testing a completely different style of tour!

This time, we’re shifting focus from a whirlwind overview to an immersive, relaxed shopping/exploring experience:

  • Hotspot Clusters: Rather than rushing past dozens of storefronts, we’re focusing on the absolute premier hubs for official, vintage, and second-hand character goods—including Nintendo OSAKA, Pokémon Center, Capcom Store, Mugiwara/One Piece, Kiddy Land, Animate, and Surugaya Chayamachi.
  • Dedicated Browsing & Shopping Time: We’re building in real, generous time inside each stop so you can actually browse the shelves, hunt for rare retro finds, pick up souvenirs, or admire Japan-exclusive releases.
  • Line Strategy: Major flagships (like Nintendo OSAKA and Pokémon Center) can occasionally get busy at checkout or use timed entry passes during peak moments. We’ll help you balance register wait times with browsing time so you grab what you want smoothly without losing valuable exploration time.
  • Subterranean Transit (With a Quick Hop Above Ground): We use Umeda's subterranean network for the vast majority of our walking to avoid the outdoor weather. However, to connect to two of our absolute must-visit stops (Animate and Surugaya in Chayamachi), we will pop above ground briefly—so if rain is in the forecast, definitely bring along an umbrella!
  • Fandom-First Guides: Our guides are passionate fans ready to talk lore, recommend hidden-gem series, and introduce popular domestic franchises that haven't made it mainstream overseas yet.

Tour Schedule & Flow

  • Date: Tuesday, September 22, 2026
  • Gathering Time: 12:30 PM at the Hankyu "BIG MAN" screen (1F) (a classic local meeting landmark)
  • Departure: 13:00 sharp (Running late? No stress—just leave a comment on this thread and our team will coordinate to meet you!)
  • Mid-Tour Break: We’ll pause for a breather, snacks, or coffee at the stylish HEP FIVE TAMLO food hall (7F).
  • Wrap-Up & Loot Haul: After the break we hit the big premier shops, Pokemon, Nintendo, etc. before we’ll head to the open-air covered plaza at Toki-no-Hiroba (Osaka Station City 5F) just after 17:30. We’ll kick back on the artificial turf under the massive glass canopy, show off what everyone picked up (or chat about window-shopping highlights), hear your candid thoughts on the route, and aim to wrap up around 18:00.
  • Total Duration: Approximately 5 hours (13:00 – 18:00).
  • Cost: Free (This is an unpaid development rehearsal; you only cover your own personal transit, snacks, and any merch you choose to buy).
  • What to Bring: Comfortable shoes, your shopping wishlist, and an umbrella just in case the weather turns during our brief above-ground stretch!

How to Join (We'll be accepting ten guests total.)

To help us test out our new web platform and check-in flow:

  1. Go to http://thisisosaka.org. Use the Invitation Code: PRACTICE
  2. Visit the site, select the tour on the 22nd, and input your invite code to unlock the complimentary registration.
  3. You’ll receive a digital pass with a QR code—snap a quick screenshot or photo on your phone so we can test scanning it when we meet at BigMan. (If any tech hiccups happen, don't worry at all—this is a beta test and we have manual check-in ready on standby).

Whether you’re hunting for rare retro games, official character plushies, or just want to master Umeda's underground layout alongside fellow fans, we’d love to have you with us. Leave a comment below if you'd like an invite code!

Lost Winnie teddy bear Umeda

Post image
27 Upvotes

Hi everybody, a shot in the dark:

We lost a small Winnie the Pooh plush toy on the Hankyu line somewhere between Ishibashi Handai-mae and Umeda. (Coming back from Minoh)

Hankyu lost and found office was unsuccessful.

It is not of big value, more about a sentimental favorite toy 😞

Any chance for a miracle find? 😁

Thank you!

First family trip to Osaka with 3 teenage boys - Namba, Shinsaibashi or Umeda? Hotel vs Airbnb?

Hi everyone! This will be our first trip to Osaka as a family of 5, traveling entirely on our own. We have three boys, 13yo twins and a 9yo with mild ADHD. Previously, we've always travelled with my inlaws, who would take care of most of the planning and even sponsoring the trips, which we're always very grateful for. So this time, it is all on me to figure things out and I'm already going down the rabbit hole of researching for the trip.

We'll be in Osaka for 6 nights in mid-December 2026, and the priorities are pretty straightforward with teenage boys - USJ, Nintendo, food (preferably muslim-friendly), easy transport connections and hopefully not too much unnecessary walking! Rough itinerary includes USJ, a day trip to Kyoto, Nara, Kaiyukan and exploring Osaka itself.

We've pretty much decided on direct airport transfers for convenience, so being close to the airport train isn't a priority. However, I'm really struggling to decide where to stay - I had initially focused on Namba, then started looking at Shinsaibashi, and now after reading more posts, I'm considering Umeda as well. Ideally we'd like somewhere that isn't overly hectic, but still within a 300-500m walk to a metro/train station.

I'm also torn between hotels and Airbnbs. With five of us, space to open up luggage bags is important and a washing machine (with a dryer considering it is December) would be a huge plus.

Would really appreciate some advice on:

  1. Base - Namba, Shinsaibashi, Umeda or anywhere else considering the above itinerary?
  2. How practical is staying in an Airbnb in Osaka? Any downsides compared with hotels, particularly when traveling with perpetually hungry teenagers?
  3. Is it worth prioritising proximity to JR stations over Osaka Metro stations, given our planned itinerary?

I know I'm probably overthinking this, but I'd really like to get the location right so we're not spending too much of our holiday navigating the December crowds with three boys in tow. Would love to hear from anyone who's travelled to Osaka with teenage boys or stayed in any of the above areas. Thank you so much!

Looking for a casual 5 a side futsal soccer game

Around the Umeda, Ebie or Namba areas of close by Nipponbashin Station. I’m visiting Osaka on the 1st-5th Nov, preferably looking to play on the 2nd Nov.

I tried to reserve a spot on labola but I only get as far as the confirm details page as it won’t accept my Australian phone number or my name in Furigana

Osaka vs Kyoto for New Year’s? How would you split our stay? (Dec 28-Jan 8)

Writing

We’re a family of 4 (youngest is 12, the rest are adults) visiting Japan, and we’re trying to plan around the holiday closures without packing too much into each day.
Our original plan was to stay in Osaka and do day trips to Kyoto and Nara (if possible), then move to Tokyo around Jan 4. We figured staying in one place for a few nights would be less hassle than constantly packing and changing hotels.
Now I’m wondering if it might be better to stay in Kyoto for a few nights instead, so we can explore at a more relaxed pace rather than rushing back and forth.
For those who’ve visited Japan around this time, how would you split your stay between Osaka, Kyoto, and Tokyo? Are there certain days when it makes more sense to be in one city because of New Year’s closures?
Our family enjoys a bit of everything Japan has to offer, but we’d rather have a relaxed trip than cram everything in. We also want to make the most of our time without spending a day somewhere where most things are closed.
What do you recommend? Thanks!

Uji isn't the only place with tea plantations. Let's go cycling to the tea fields of Wazuka!

Took a ride out to Wazuka in Kyoto, which produces some of the finest green tea in Japan.

The climb up through the rolling tea plantations was pretty steep, but reaching the top and seeing this view made every single pedal stroke worth it.

For anyone visiting Japan with a bike (or renting one), exploring the countryside around Kyoto is an unforgettable experience!

Cabs/taxis at minoh kayano station to katsuoji temple

Hello!

Visiting Osaka in mid November. Are taxis easily available at minoh kayano station in the morning around 7:30 am?

I prefer to be at katsuoji temple right at opening time but the first bus from minoh kayano to the temple doesn't start operating until much later (around 9 am).

Thank you!

Osaka Brunch/Buffet Question

My wife and I are looking for a good all you can eat type of buffet or brunch (We will be visiting Osaka next month). We visited this location twice in Tokyo, which had a great mixture of Japanese and Western dishes: www.princehotels.com/shintakanawa/restaurants/slop-side-diner-zakuro-buffet-and-cafe/ We are willing to pay around ¥7500 per person and we aren't big drinkers so alcoholic beverages aren't really important to us. Also we are looking for an all you can eat crab place. I think Osaka is "the" place for those but I'd be happy to consider any recommendations. Thanks!

Osaka Hotel Recommendations with Early Morning Coffee (4–5 AM)

Hi everyone! I’m looking for hotel recommendations in Osaka with a convenient location, preferably near a train station for easy access to Kyoto and Kansai Airport.

One thing that’s particularly important to me is having access to hot coffee as early as 4 or 5 AM. I really can’t start my day without coffee!

Ideally, the hotel should have a 24-hour coffee machine, a convenience store inside, or another way to get freshly brewed coffee early in the morning.

Osaka half marathon 2027

I signed up for the half in Osaka in Feb. anyone have any experience running it? I’m from Canada and this is my first international race.

I signed up with Run Japan. Payment went through so I assume I’m registered? I don’t have any other confirmation email other than the payment receipt.

What should I expect in terms of overall experience, logistics, supplies/stations, etc? I’m excited but also not sure what to expect!

Anyone traveling Tokyo -> Osaka these days?

Hey everyone,

Probably a very weird question, but as the title says, is anyone traveling from Tokyo to Osaka these days?

I forgot something in the shinkansen going to Tokyo, and apparently the only way is for me to go there to pick it up, which is not really an option. It's either that, or mailing it to my hotel. However, my hotel doesn't have a reception, so sending it there is not really an option...

If yes, please send me a DM, or comment here, and I will send you a DM.

Many thanks in advance for any fellow Japan traveler.

Squid Ink Ramen in Osaka

Hi, everyone.

Buddy of mine is traveling to Osaka in business and it'll be his first time going to Japan and he's very excited. He's told me one of the main things he'd like to try, in terms of gastronomy, is squid ink ramen, but, after some googling, that seems to be more of an Okinawa thing?

Is there anywhere where he might be able to go to try squid ink ramen in Osaka?
