Movie Discussion The ending of Oppenheimer asks the same question as the ending of inception.

41 Upvotes

The question we are tasked to answer by nolan is whether the subjective experience of the protagonist true? Whether it's cobb returning to his home, as well as in the of image of Oppenheimer being convinced with his dialogue with Albert Einstein that he has essentially burnt the home of humanity.

Movie Discussion you guys ever noticed that there are actually two water-rippling sequence in oppenheimer?

8 Upvotes

if you rewatch the film, you'd notice another scene with the ripples at the end of the movie, when he talks with einstein. both scenes tells different stories:

  1. the ripple sequence in the beginning tells how oppenheimer is curious and intrigued by "a different universe"-a different perspective of the quantum world and how he goes on, driven by curiosity.

![img](tr1h0e3k4e8e1)

  1. after the bombing, he becomes devastated by the impact his invention had on the world. so the 2nd sequence which comes at the end depicts the catastrophic consequences of his own creation, tells us how he imagines that he had done 'a chain reaction' and he got 'blood on his hands'.

the ripples also evoke a sense of universal interconnectedness, echoing oppenheimer’s own view of science, life, and morality. They suggest how small actions in one domain (e.g. theoretical physics) can have cosmic, even existential, consequences.

its so awesome how nolan had this level of creativity of showing the same scene having different interpretations in different timelines to the audience

I went back and thought about this and yeah this is definitely metaphorical Zeus lightning, punishing "Prometheus" (Oppenheimer).

Not a great pic but the beam of light above Robb's head, it's at about 02:46:10.

Movie Discussion The Solution to the "Trinity Test Problem"

Many people said that the Atomic Bomb Test in the movie looked too fake. But after the accidental Blue Origin rocket explosion this year, that gave me an idea. If Nolan were to try to reshoot the sequence but use practical effects, in the middle of a desert at night, they could fill large tanks in the desert with Liquid Hydrogen and Liquid Oxygen, put it on top of a small model of the tower that looks kind of like the one in the test, and then detonate it. It would look spectacular and massive. They could do that for a 2033 10th anniversary re-release of the movie. However, I don't know how legal or expensive it would be.

General Discussion The AGI "Oppenheimer," fully cast: Trinity = Stargate, Heisenberg = DeepSeek, Fermi's bet = p(doom) [1/2]

0 Upvotes

*Author: K=* [ke9ual](https://x.com/ke9ual) *(English translation: Claude Fable 5.1)*

Two years ago I saw *Oppenheimer* in theaters. It's an all-star lineup of every quantum-mechanics scientist you've ever heard of, so it doubles as a stan movie for physics nerds. It is ridiculously long, though. (Three hours.) It showed up on Netflix, so I recently watched it a second time.

What follows is what I kept turning over in my head while watching.

AGI development will get its own movie someday soon.\* So who is the next person, after Oppenheimer, to be saddled with the greatest karma in human history? In other words: **whose name goes in the title?**

\* Assuming humanity hasn't gone extinct.

# The title role

**Oppenheimer** — the man directing the build of humanity's final weapon beyond the bomb, AGI. Who is it?

* **Sam Altman**, surely.

(He's stepped back from the research front line and now focuses on scientists, government relations, and salesmanship — the parallels write themselves.)

**Strauss** — the second protagonist, the anti-Oppenheimer political enemy. Who?

* If we're looking for the anti-Sam political rival, **Elon Musk** is the most plausible fit.

(Honestly I resent this — he's no mediocrity, he's superhuman, and I'm an Elon fan — but it fits.)

**General Groves** — Oppenheimer's buddy. Who?

* For "directed the construction of Los Alamos": **Greg Brockman** (AI infrastructure, building Stargate).
* For "procured the 1,200 tons of uranium": **Jensen Huang** (leather jacket).
* For "the financier who secured government backing": **Masayoshi Son**.

(Hmm. This one's hard. There's no one who looks like the person in charge on the government side.)

**Los Alamos** — the bomb's development site?

* **OpenAI**

**Chicago** — the anti-Los-Alamos, Szilard faction?

* **Anthropic**

(I hesitated a bit, since it also has some MIRI/Yudkowsky flavor.)

**Arthur Compton** — head of the cautious Chicago faction (not in the film)?

* **Dario Amodei**

(Leads the cautious camp, ends up building AGI anyway. The position is the same.)

**Einstein** — the elder sage and confidant?

* **Geoffrey Hinton**, the obvious pick.

**Niels Bohr** — the still-active elder sage and advisor?

* **Yoshua Bengio** (the International AI Safety Report = Bohr's memorandum to Roosevelt)

**Isidor Rabi** — declined to join Los Alamos, stayed on as a consultant?

* **Yann LeCun?**

(Temperament is the exact opposite. And in the "Fermi bet" below he's on the dud side, so really he's more Ramsey than Rabi.)

**John von Neumann** — the towering genius (left out of the film for script reasons)?

* **Demis Hassabis**, no question.

# The other side

**Heisenberg** — stayed in Germany (China) and led the domestic program?

* **Liang Wenfeng of DeepSeek**, without a doubt. (Track record and résumé both fit.)

**The émigrés from Germany** — Fermi and Bethe?

* **Bethe**: no idea who. (Heavyweight talent, deeply trusted by Einstein and Bohr.)
* **Fermi**: no idea here either. (Legendary genius. Experimental instinct and intuition were divine.)

**Klaus Fuchs** — the spy passing bomb secrets to the other bloc (China, Russia)?

* Fuchs: unknown. (For now.)

# Ideology

What are the AGI-era equivalents of the film's political backdrop — the enemy ideology (fascism), the dissident ideology (communism), and the persecuted group (Jews)?

* Right now the dissident ideology, as seen from the mainstream (accelerationism, e/acc), is decelerationism (Doomers). But decelerationism will probably become the mainstream by 2027, so this one's hard to pin down. I'll just list the leading candidates.

The dissident ideology (communism) might turn out to be: a revisionist socialism preaching a basic-income utopia? Or anti-Dataism (a species-wide rejection of the "religion of data")? Or an anti-AI/AGI movement (an AGI-era Luddite movement)? Or, for the third bloc that could eventually build ASI (Russia), an African accelerationism? Or a "neo-humanism" — a kind of anti-AI hymn to humanity, a Second Renaissance? Or a great backlash against the Great Physics Empire — an anti-rationalist, spiritualist movement?\*\*

Or the positions could flip entirely, with the accelerationists denounced by all of humanity as the war criminals who set civilization back. (Note: in the branch where civilization is wrecked but humanity barely survives.)

# The physics

**The neutron (Chadwick)** — the discovery of the medium that makes fission possible?

* Whoever realized semiconductors could be used to build AI (what Demis Hassabis calls the invention that "turns sand into intelligence").

**The fission reaction** — recursive self-improvement (RSI). First discoverers?

* The authors of the **Transformer paper** (Otto Hahn and Fritz Strassmann).

**The critical mass calculation** — the Frisch–Peierls memorandum ("a few kilograms of U-235 will explode")?

* The authors of the **scaling law papers** (Kaplan 2020, Chinchilla 2022).

**Fissile material** — uranium / plutonium?

* Uranium: **GPUs**
* Plutonium: **Cerebras** is the closest thing (or maybe some high-efficiency machine that doesn't exist yet).

**Isotopes** — looks usable, isn't?

* Uranium: AMD/Intel GPUs
* Plutonium: variants of the high-efficiency machines?

**Uranium during enrichment?**

* An AI's weights during training.

**A leak of enriched uranium?**

* Open weights.

**Criticality?**

* An AI in training reaching the critical state where RSI starts to run.

**Uranium enrichment vs. plutonium enrichment** — the two development paths to AGI?

* Uranium enrichment (current mainstream): Transformer × scaling laws (on GPUs)
* Plutonium enrichment (high-efficiency): ??? × scaling laws? (on high-efficiency hardware)

**The bomb's blueprint** — the recipe?

* LLMs, RLHF, and mechanisms still unknown.

# The chain reaction

**The first idea of a chain reaction** — the intelligence explosion?

* **I. J. Good (1965)**, no doubt.

**Atmospheric ignition?**

* Human extinction via runaway AGI/ASI.

**The first estimate and the rigorous examination of atmospheric ignition** (Teller and Konopinski)?

* **Yudkowsky** (first estimate), **Bostrom** (rigorous examination).

**The first formulation of the alignment problem?**

* **Wiener (1960)**: we had better be sure that the purpose we put into the machine is the purpose we actually want. (Machine in the Shell.)

**The basic solution to atmospheric ignition?**

* The alignment problem.

**The exact solution?**

* The core alignment problem.

**Fermi's bet** — the night before Trinity, the scientists bet on whether the atmosphere would ignite?

* **p(doom)**: "What's your subjective probability that AGI ends humanity?"

**The yield predictions just before Trinity** (≈ AGI timeline predictions)?

* Amodei: 2026–27 ("broadly better than humans at almost everything")
* Altman: within the current presidential term (by 2028)
* Hassabis: 3–5 years (50% by 2030)
* Hinton: 5–20 years
* Sutskever: "I'm not saying when. I'm saying that it will." (declined to bet)
* LeCun: "LLMs will never get there" (= bet on a dud)

(Historically: Bethe 8 kt, Rabi 18 kt, Teller 45 kt, Oppenheimer 0.3 kt, Ramsey 0 (dud). Actual: about 21 kt.)

Actual measurement? → Not yet.

**The theoretical guarantee against atmospheric ignition** (the extinction scenario)?

* No. We don't even have an alignment theory.

(General Groves: "It's going to be fine, right?")

# Trinity

**The Trinity test site** — ground zero?

* **Stargate**.

**The military observers at Trinity** — the first live test of AGI?

* Masayoshi Son, Peter Thiel, Aschenbrenner, Andreessen Horowitz, and the other big investors?

(Historically it was Groves, Farrell, Bush, and Conant — agents of the State. This time it'll be agents of Capital.)

**Was the Trinity test** — the first AGI test — **a success?**

* Not yet.

**Feynman** — the one guy who didn't wear the protective glass at Trinity, played bongos at the celebration, oddball with impeccable taste, postwar Caltech teacher?

* **Andrej Karpathy**, on character and teaching alone. No one else comes close.

**Szilard** — who submitted the petition to stop the bomb from being dropped?

* Silly question. It's **Yudkowsky** and no one else.

**The petition itself?**

* *If Anyone Builds It, Everyone Dies* (Yudkowsky & Soares, 2025).

(Historically the petition was drafted by Szilard and signed by 70. This one is a two-author book.)

**Truman** — the president who made the final decision to drop the bomb?

* For now, **Donald Trump**, I suppose? Runner-up: Vance?

**The Non-Proliferation Treaty** — an AGI non-proliferation treaty?

* Of course not. Not yet.

# The hydrogen bomb

**The H-bomb** — ASI: imploding AGI via RSI, the idea of using fusion?

* The idea that if you put AGI through implosion (RSI), you can build an even greater superweapon: ASI (superintelligence).

**Teller** — calculated and pushed for the H-bomb (ASI), fell out with Oppenheimer's Los Alamos crowd?

* **Ilya Sutskever**, a.k.a. Mr. Will-Absolutely-Build-ASI?

**The motivation** — "we must rush the H-bomb to beat the Soviets"?

* Aschenbrenner's *Situational Awareness*.

**The theory for the gun-type (uranium) bomb** — AGI via LLM × scaling laws?

* The scaling law papers (= the Frisch–Peierls memorandum). Already covered.

**The theory for the implosion-type (plutonium) bomb** — AGI via RSI (von Neumann et al.)?

* Not yet.

**The H-bomb (ASI) yield calculation** — Feynman and von Neumann on ENIAC?

* Not yet either.

**The developers of the world's first hydrogen bomb (ASI)?**

* No one. Not yet.

**And above all — where is the next Hiroshima and Nagasaki?**

I got so carried away with the casting that I forgot my original question.

**Whose name goes in the title?**

Altman? Elon Musk? Donald Trump?

— No.

My guess: none of the above.

The person who most deserves to have this movie named after them is

**the first person to reach ASI without alignment.**

That person.

Because that person is the one who "becomes Death, the destroyer of human history."

Yes — the person who reaches criticality *by accident*.

**Louis Slotin, of the Demon Core.**

In 1945 he assembled the Trinity core (the first AGI, in this analogy) with his own hands. The next year, during a demonstration with the plutonium sphere meant for the third bomb — the Demon Core — he was holding the reflector open with nothing but a screwdriver, bringing it to the edge of criticality ("tickling the dragon's tail"), when his hand slipped. There was a blue flash, he took a lethal dose, and he died nine days later.

In the same way: the person who, without sufficient alignment and without meaning to, lets RSI run on an AGI and reaches ASI first.

That person is who this movie should be named after.

Except this time it isn't only the person who dies. It's the world.

So the title will be a name that nobody knows yet.

One last thing, though.

If alignment succeeds somewhere between AGI and ASI —

then it'll safely be **Sam Altman**.

So: where will the next Hiroshima and Nagasaki be?

That's the question I'll answer next.

*(Continued in Part 2: The Human–ASI Divorce (HAD) scenario \[2/2\])*

\*\* I suspect the title of "Theory of Everything" will go to whoever unifies physics and the brain in the language of quantum information. The 21st-century unified theory will probably swallow the brain, and even the mind. The territory of the Great Physics Empire will reach its peak at that moment — and face a worldwide backlash. Think of the Roman Empire under Trajan: maximum territory is not a period of stability but of great upheaval. Physics, which split from theology (the science of truth) after the 6th century, will reunite with it and face humanity's last great backlash from philosophy, ideology, and religion. But in the end, physics will win.

Movie Discussion The emotional impact Oppenheimer have in me

37 Upvotes

As a scientist (molecular biologist), I have a deep and complicated relationship with Oppenheimer. Every time I think about the film and the story behind it, I find myself wishing I could have been there and done something to prevent it.
At the same time, I’m fascinated by their passion for science and for understanding how things work — and by how that drive coexisted with building something so destructive. What gets me is that it wasn’t a case of the purpose shifting on them. The goal was a usable weapon from the beginning, and Oppenheimer was in the room for the decisions about how it would be used. He knew, and he did it anyway. It’s a complicated story. As someone driven by science and, I think, fairly empathetic, I can understand Oppenheimer and his love for physics. What I still can’t fully understand is how he went through with it.

My heart skips a beat & become emotional every time I hear or read hiroshima and nagasaki.😭💔🕊️🇯🇵

General Discussion [NO SPOILERS] PSA: Must understand history before watching.

0 Upvotes

If I say Emily got lost on the way. So Tim needs to get the information Carol. You will have no clue wtf I am talking about regarding my friends and what they're doing. This is the entire film if you do not understand the history. I guarantee it will be an awful movie, and you will miss out on why it is actually great. Anybody claiming to understand the movie without understanding the history is lying through their teeth (same phenomenon brilliantly allegorized in seeing emperor clothes). Everything in the film is completely impossible to apprehend based on what is presented. What makes matters worse is that the film jumps around to different time frames. Which is great for the film, but just escalates the confusion for anybody who does not know what they are looking at.

I took the liberty of the compiling the following recommendations before watching the movie. These are all curated to make sure everything is historical with no awareness or regard for the film. This will give you a full understanding of everything you need to know before watching so you get the best possible experience:

  • Crash Course History of Science #32 + 33 (2019) Start here. This gives you the foundational physics of nuclear fission in so you actually understand what the scientists are trying to build.
  • To End All War: Oppenheimer & the Atomic Bomb (2023) Watch this second. It provides the complete historical narrative from his early academic life through the entire Manhattan Project, giving you the main framework.
  • Modern Marvels: The Manhattan Project (2003) + Trinity: The World's First Atomic Bomb Test (2023) Now that you know the main timeline, watch these to dive into the specific logistical and engineering challenges of building the massive infrastructure and the bomb itself.
  • The Day After Trinity (1981) Watch this primary-source documentary once you understand the history. Hearing the actual scientists reflect on the moral weight of their creation hits much harder when you know exactly what they went through to build it.
  • The Trials of J. Robert Oppenheimer (2009) This focuses entirely on the 1954 security hearings and the Cold War paranoia. A major aspect of the film will make complete sense now that you fully understand his complex relationship with the military.
  • Oppenheimer's Shadow (2007) End with this academic breakdown. It serves as a concluding look at his historical legacy, his moral philosophy, and his long-term impact on global nuclear policy.

[NOTE - YT critique on the film failure at storytelling. This is a basic concept - a standalone story must provide its own internal context to be fully comprehended on its own terms. The film does not provide that. However, if I say something like "His phone buzzed in his pocket. He looked at the glowing screen, and read the message from his homie." I do not have explain what any of that means. Likewise, Oppenheimer doesn't need to provide explanation and context for the storytelling. Because it is based on presumed common understanding of these events and history. The storytelling is actually done very well because it is based on real historical understanding.]

Movie Discussion Depiction

Which movie or series, in your opinion, did the best depiction of Oppenheimer?
