If you had a bad feeling then don't ignore it, we are social animal and we pick up cues that our concious mind can't comprehend. But if you think that he is nice , then i believe communication is the key . Talk to him.

It's fine to be embarassed and still do what is right. In my opinion every relationship is way above this embarassment or ego...

You never know until you talk .. don't assume, not today and not ever. People are very unpredictable. + Even if he moved on , you atleast get a clarity. And in my opinion it's not weird
