tbf this is most anime companies. Its a stark contrast to america's media where sexualized things are more heavily censored then gore.
18
u/Justanotherrandoonli Jun 30 '26
I honestly think that is a significantly smarter practice. Like I would much rather my child see a naked breast (You know, the thing that literally provided them food for 1-2 years of its life. You didn't mind it seeing a naked tit back then) than graphic violence a body mutilation. Like people freak out at the idea of a 10 year old child seeing a naked body even though that 10 year old child is also expected to get naked and shower every day, but if that 10 year old walks in on an episode of the walking dead and see's a zombie getting split in half with its guts literally falling out then it'll probably be ok. Its just incredibly realistic special effects after all!
11
u/Not_Wrong_Tho Jun 30 '26
Also sex and sexuality is, hopefully, going to be a normal part of their life when they're adults.
Graphic violence, hopefully, won't.
It makes perfect sense which of the two's portrayal should be more closely scrutinised.
2
u/Pizzamess Jun 30 '26
No I completely agree. I've always felt that America's culture of sexual taboo was intensely hypocritical considering how loose its regulations on violence is.

Really, itās not that itās fanservice, itās that itās really common and awkwardly timed, if it were handled a bit better I donāt think people would care too much since in the manga the only real point of contention is that Oda draws hot women the exact same every time, never really that he puts them in awkward situations all the time

And all of the unnecessary ass and boob shots of Boney in the manga, even DURING Egghead. I just scrubbed through the 1st 12 chapters of Egghead and found 5 panels (actually 8, but 3 were borderline so i left them out) with Bonney being shown in a unnecessary fanservicey way. And that was just in the 1st 12, and i clearly remember there being fan servicey shots of Bonney AFTER THE BACKSTORY in the manga.
Oda does it too. I mean look at the outfit he put Rebecca in, then decided that she was 16. Just make her at least 18 if you are gonna dress her like that man, c'mon!
Then there is the 15 year old Shirahoshi. Again, there is 0 reason she had to be 15. But he made her 15, so he could at least not drawn fan service of her.
People are getting waay to comfortable letting Oda get away with this creepy shit by blaming it all on the anime. WHO DO FOLLOW SUIT AND EVEN PUT EMPHASIS ON THE MOMENTS, WHICH IS ALSO BAD! But the author could have just designed these under aged women to not have their boobs and asses out for no explicable reason. Or he could have just made them adults.

I mean, I think in general people can be in to weirdly exaggerated proportions in animated characters. Iām imagining the classic dorito shaped men of the DCAU or the 6ā11ā 12-pack thwunks of manhwa. I donāt think finding something sexy in an anime really correlates much to irl preferences
7
u/eclectictiger0 Jun 29 '26
The dorito shaped men werent shaped that way because people found it sexually attractive if thats what youre implying. Even then, a lot of the shows with men with crazy builds like that still had more diversity as far as male body types went.

I ADORE fanservice, but something about One Piece's strikes me as Off.
Probably because women are either sexpots or ogres in the series. Also the art style tends to make the sexy women have the same proportions a 12 year old would draw up. It wasn't always that way either, which makes it more irksome.

I am a panpoly woman afflicted with male gaze.
I fkn love anime tiddies. I love ass and legs for miles even more. I love them even better when there's a solid story backdrop, and solid proportions to dem tiddies. Witchblade is one of my enduring favorite anime series because there's big ol' honkers and ass for days AND it makes you feel things. But fanservice is also fine in smoothbrain ass anime, so long as you are informed of what you've signed up for. Knights of Ramune is a great example of something that is smoothbrain and chock full of fanservice Just Because. Kill La Kill is a good example of Just Because but Also There's a Reason! None of these series pretend to be anything else.
One Piece flips the script partway through, it's a rug pull.
It doesn't do anything in One Piece but make me feel like a 12 year old took up the helm partway through. I say this because I was drawing that exact shit when -I- was 12. It doesn't bring on any endorphins, just skeeves. It doesn't fit what the story is trying to tell. Imagine those designs in Berserk, lmao. It's not a match, it shows up wahaaaay later and people are put off by it.

For me itās the fact that a female fan wrote an innocent fan letter to Oda about how the fan service made her and her friend uncomfortable, so in response he made the post-time-skip designs even more revealing because this grown man felt he needed to dunk on a teenage girl I guess

I think it's gotten much more overdone over the years, too. Like Nami had big boobs pre-time skip too, but they were still at least somewhat believable proportions. And they were more covered up more often, so when she was in a bikini in Skypeia or in the dancer outfit in Alabasta, it was hot. But now she's got like a 10 inch waist, 50 inch boobs, and always is only on a bikini. So it's just too much now.

Yes I actually do mind especially in the later arcs, because the themes have been getting serious, and it's hard for this story to be taken serious if juvenile fan service is still present. 2
u/Parzival2436 Jun 30 '26
It's gotten a relatively fresh resurgence too. I think the media is genuinely pushing people to ultra-prudishness because powerful companies like paypal and Mastercard are also pulling their services for things that go against their views.
They're using banning NSFW as a springboard but they're definitely not stopping there. SFW LGBT games have already taken a hit because of the same wave of puritanism.

Not particularly. At least itās not THE selling point like a lot of anime at one point. HotD, Monster Musume, High School DXD, etc. where there might have been a story, but it was just an excuse to show off the women. One Piece is story first, fanservice second.

u/PrincessMold444 God Usopp Jun 30 '26
i'm a straight woman and it doesn't bother me at all when watching the show but sometimes it stands out in art stills (specifically ones of robin) and just looks ridiculous to me š¹š¹ reminds me of that meme that was like "she breasted boob-ily down the stairs"
3
u/iRealllyAmThatGuy Jun 30 '26 edited Jun 30 '26
As someone who grew up on Dragon Ball, it doesn't bother me at all. There has been MUCH worse fan service in older anime, because animators could get away with flashing nudes. Bulma literally flashed her vagina to Roshi and animators sneaked in a boob scene in OG Dragon Ball. Let's not even take about OG Ranma. Straight up nudes all the time.
One Piece fan service is genuinely not even that bad compared to other anime. Some bikini shots and jiggle physics is pretty much lightweight.

Okay, so thatās inaccurate, because most female pirates were not trying to be found as woman, as seeing as having woman on a crew with lonely and criminal men was a bad idea, and it was seen as bad luck, so that would mean that women on pirate crews would be the captain, which only two record of a female pirate captain is known, being Anne Bonney and Mary Read and records of them are inflated to be more exciting by the press, a female pirate revealing herself would sell headlines, but no concrete proof of it exists outside of news articles, but those might say that to sell more articles and be more shocking.

Fan service can have value when it makes sense. If Nami was wearing togs in Drum Island and didnāt acknowledge the cold, or wear something over her outfit thatās where I feel it would detract from the story. Sometimes people really do just be wearing nothing or borderline nothing at all, anime characters should be allowed that freedom too. However at some point a line should be drawn, and considering that One Piece is a shonen in which young kids would be drawn to it, I do wish it was toned down some.

I think itās hilarious that this is attributed to Toei more than Oda, because they make the cleavage a bit larger.
Oda is the one designing these outfits and the vast majority of proportions. Oda is the one who makes most females have a smaller torso than actual organs would have room to fit in.
