Cat pregnancy is 63 to 65 days, those kittens look about a month old, so either the cat was so pregnant she was about to pop before she escaped, or she’s a a kitten thief
I feel like the rarity has become overstated. 20% is more uncommon but not "you'll never see it" rare. Male torties are also rare but actually really rare with 0.3%. Either of these colours usually is a specific gender but the more rare gender is very different levels of rare.
We got one in at the vet clinic where I used to work. Everyone was so excited! I remember one technician took pictures (including a rear shot to prove it was a male).
Klinefelter, or the one-in-a-million chimera calicos? I know Klinefelter isn’t as crippling as some of the other genetic disorders, but I still feel bad for them.
It was a small rural hospital, so no tests were run to confirm. I just remember that one of our vets said that he likely was XXY. He wasn't in for any problems. It was something routine (maybe vaccines, I don't remember).
And? I've literally never found a female orange, anywhere. I've lived in multiple states, found multiple strays, owned multiple oranges, and have been to many pwt stores. Not a single one.
In a way a female orange is like finding a wild Abra (even odds aren't too far off 20% vs 15%), rare on any given encounter but try a few and you succeed. A male calico is more like finding a wild shiny without any assist like shiny charm (odds are 1:3000 vs 1:4069).
I foster and was given two orange 3mnth olds. They has numbers for names when I picked them up. Wasn't keeping them so named them Butch and Sundance, to post pictures and look how cute please consider. Butch turned out to be a girl (i think it was assumed and not checked closely) so Pickles and Sundance. Pickles got adopted by a wonderful family that had white cat named taters:) Sundance is still making my life difficult as will not get picked up let alone be put in carrier! He got all the orange brain cells of litter!
I had one growing up and didn't realize that it was rare. She had escaped from home and got caught in a trap when I was an infant. She had to have her leg amputated and she was a three legged cat as long as I knew her. She was very agile!
For those wondering, 80% of orange cats are male because the recessive genes for it are "exclusive" to their X chromosomes. So while a female cat requires having the genes on both X chromosomes to be orange, a male cat only needs to have it on his one X chromosome because there are no equivalent genes on the Y chromosome that can take over.
This also explains why 95% of colourblind people are male!
And if you ever meet one you’ll see that they know EXACTLY how rare they are 😅 My Elizabeth struts around like a freakin’ queen expecting to be worshipped.
Nah, orange is more likely male, but it actually just skewed to 75%-80% male orange, and 20%-25% female. Orange is recessive and carried on the X so males just need one for the gene to be expressed, while females need both chromosomes to have it (XX).
So if you have a population of breeding orange males already, the chances of orange females starting to pop up around them increase dramatically just by sheer probability. If this girly found an orange male for a mate, which seems likely given she's 3/3 on solid orange kittens, the kittens are pretty equal on the odds of male/female.
You may be thinking of calico or tortiseshell, which are almost always female because it always requires a certain set of codominant genes from across two Xs, so male calicos pretty much have to be XXY for it to happen, which is exceedingly rare.
yes, i’m so glad that you said buff because I’m scared that I’m going to say that to someone and they’re gonna be like “your cat’s just super muscular?” My female is also buff.
Hahahahaha I’ve never actually considered that being a thing to non cat people. I love it! I grew up showing rabbits in 4-h so random color names are normal to me. I’ve never thought about what they sound like to non animal people.
