I'm guessing that HPs still have shitty stylus tech. I had one, after having owned two much earlier designs for "Tablet-PC"s, and it was useless.

I now have a stylus enabled Lenovo Yoga that works pretty darn good, and a Microsoft Surface Pro 9 that works great. Plus a Samsung S6 Lite 2024, that also works pretty good.

Although, you might get some improvement by using a "drawing glove" to reduce interference from the hell of your hand touching the screen (AKA "Palm rejection."

The chances that that is caused by OneNote is very small. And you don't need to jump to an entirely new operating system platform if you don't want to. Ignore ask the iPad fanbois trying to start religious wars.

The computer is new (one month old) so I don't want to change it

When I write on one note with my finger the problem of the video doesn't happen

Have you tried other stylus enabled programs. If you don't own any, you can install Krita for free.

If it's only a month old, is it past the warranty? This is obviously broken.

What is broken the pc or the pen?

Because the pc works fine

Most folks don't know that the main part of what makes the stylus work is behind the screen. That's the part that senses where the stylus is and where it's pointing. So, that's always the part that is causing problems like this.

My contention is just that the HP Stylus technology is so badly designed that it might as well just be broken. If it has a stylus, but said stylus doesn't work with major software, then the whole stylus system is broken.

So what should I do?

Buy a pen that is not by hp? I'm clueless

No. There are various different technologies and standards for the way the stylus interacts with the sensor in the laptop. And, even when the laptop and pen are the same technology they sometimes kinda need to be custom designed to work together. I can't remember what technology is used by HP, and I have no clue what technologies they may have switched to lately. But, in my limited experience, they do a crappy job of sticking to the standard that they claim to be using.

I know it is extra confusing because everyone talks as if the stylus/pen itself is the sole determining factor. But they work as a pair.

If you can't return that laptop and get a completely different brand, then you may simply be stuck with a laptop that can't do what the label said it could do, with regards to using a stylus.

But don't give up just yet. Make sure you have all the correct stylus/pen drivers. For your specific model of laptop. Make sure you have tested it with some other stylus-enabled software. Usually, there is a testing and calibration program that comes with those drivers. Kind of like how a printer driver will often have a party of it that will print test pages.

And, there is a subreddit called r/stylus (I think) where people talk about the stylus and how it works with the laptop in a more specific way, instead of just how it works on one particular program. Folks in this subreddit are more focused on just using the OneNote software, assuming you've got a stylus that actually frikkin' works. So they may be able to help you get the stylus to work with your laptop. And then, it should work just fine regardless of which program you are using.

OH GAWD do I feel your pain. These things can sometimes work or not work so intermittently that it will drive you MAD troubleshooting it all.

Yup, make sure you've got the latest driver's. It may even require updating the firmware for the laptop itself.

The pc doesn't suggest a software upgrade or firmware upgrade, or do I have to trigger it?

Windows doesn't always suggest the correct driver's for the base PC hardware. You gotta go to the manufacturer's website and find all the drivers for your particular model. Then download and install those. One would think that laptops would come with all the correct driver's installed. But sometimes they sit around in warehouses for a while and new drivers come out in the interim. But not all of those new drivers get registered with Microsoft's update service.

I have also had this problem on a Samsung tablet. It is kinda annoying. If I remember right I had to close and open the app or log out and log back in (something like that, it's been a while since I've used it) but that is not really a true fix.

I think using the lasso tool and moving around chunks of text was one of the things that increased the chances of it happening for me too.

I would disagree that it is nesessarily bad stylus hardware because at least in my case, it could work absolutely fine for ages until randomly it didn't. So I feel that it could also be a possible bug with onenote, but I don't know enough details about your situation to really know what is going on.

So do you suggest logging out and logging in? Will I lose my notes?

1

u/birblewirble 2d ago

Yes, you can try logging out and back in. If you do this though, it is important to make sure your notes are synced to the cloud first. Anything not synced to the cloud will be lost.

If you have another device that runs onenote, you can also double check from there that things are synced. Or if you have a desktop/PC you can export onenote notebooks as actual onenotes files too if you want an extra precaution.

I have the same issue with my iPad Pro M. I find the issue is caused by the palm/ wrist making contact with the screen before the pencil is close enough that the screen recognizes it.

Im really sad about the fact that I cannot use OneNote handwriting due to this, I mean we use (as the most company’s) Microsoft office and having my handwriting notes in OneNote without issues would be a great addition..

The problem is now fixed! I contacted support and an ai bot guided through some firmware update that could be found in the section "Windows update" in the option section of the pc
