Photojournalist Bernard Gotfryd; February 1979.

I remember running to the music store when this album came out in 1999.

💫 The Soul Showdown That Defined Motown 25

Part of Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever, this iconic face-off had two of Motown’s greatest vocal groups trading hits in a playful, competitive spirit. It wasn’t just a performance it was a celebration of 25 years of Motown magic, harmony, and showmanship.

🎤 Why It Hit So Hard

• Only two original Temptations were present, keeping the group evolving yet classic.
• All Four Tops originals delivered Levi Stubbs’ powerhouse vocals live.
• The “battle” energy made it feel like a full-on soul concert, not just a TV special.
• Inspired later joint tours and special Motown reunion performances.

🔥 Fun Facts

• Aired on NBC May 16, 1983, but taped March 25 at Pasadena Civic Auditorium.
• The segment paired hits like Reach Out I’ll Be There vs. Ain’t Too Proud to Beg.
• Michael Jackson’s moonwalk stole headlines in the same special.
