Business Select

This company is very greedy. (I believe is the correct word) when it comes to business select. First they want us to push so hard that every person walking into the door walked out with a business account even if they’re just buying one pen. so we pushed and pushed and pushed till literally everyone we know has a business account. Now because there’s too much people with business select the company says NO we’re going to deduct the percentage off of everything that we promised you to begin with.
I wish the company would just stop.

Closing thoughts

-After 490 days with the company, I am officially done at my position at OfficeMax.

-Firstly, the people I worked with were amazing and I will have lifelong friendships.

-Upper management on the other hand needs a complete overhaul. Unrealistic expectations and an overly rigid and competitive culture are ruining the company from the inside out. DSMs are clowns!

-FedEx needs to go. Profit margins are low and it just adds unneeded overhead and stress to everyone. People are so mad always and don’t understand that we are not FedEx.

-One person in print is diabolical. Why the fu€k are there four people on logistics and one in print? Criminally underpaid.

-We are overpriced…

-Business Select is a scam for 99% of ppl.

- The company has to focus on printing rather than selling products that most people don’t need.

Promoted to customer!

Officially been promoted to customer! I wish those of you still working at this company the best of luck.

After 5 years with the company, they officially let me go. Over those five years, it was a wild roller coaster, to say the least. I went through several restructures, moving from part-time to full-time to management positions about 5 to 6 times. Over those 5 years, I have had 3 different GMs, multiple ASMs, and a district change. There was also a gap between my first and second GM where I was without a GM for 8 months and had to help run the store while also doing that big reset a few years ago.

My store is one of the oldest OD in the company it’s located in a college town so a lot of customers are college kids or young professionals that don’t have a ton of money and only come in once or twice a year for a few schools supplies or need to print a project or resumes. The store gets plenty of foot traffic and does good with sales but not so great on upsells on paper or Selects or leads because we just don’t have the customer base for it. But to DM and corporate that means the store failing even when the store has been getting the company around $5 to 6 million in revenue every year.

Here is just a small glimpse on why I was let go. A few months ago, my second GM got fired for pushback on how to run the store. Now my store has a new GM who's been with the company for over 25 years and was transferred to my store. When I tell you, this guy doesn’t have an effing clue how to be a store manager or do any store functions. This man doesn’t know how to refund a Gmail order, check someone out, order store supplies, or do a DnD pallet. For 25 years at a tier one store, he made his management team do everything for him. You ask a question about how to do something, and he goes and says, “just go email somebody,” “look at the portal,” or “look at the how-to guide. When I tell you he is way in over his head is an understatement; he went from a tier one store, which he was failing at mind you, and our DM begged him to take over. The DM already knew he didn't have the qualifications, and since he was failing at a tier one store, my DM thought it was a good idea to promote him to a tier five store, a 35k sq ft store where there isn’t an office supply store within 75 miles. Our store averages around 275-300 transactions a day, and around 550 during peak back-to-school. That is more than double the size and foot traffic of his old store.

So basically, within the first two weeks, 8 associates quit because of his antics. He made two of the associates cry in front of customers on the way he handled each situation. No one at my store can stand him; he's been forcing his objective onto everyone. But guess what? His way is the complete opposite of what the company wants. He told me straight up he gets a power rush when people quit on him or when he fires people. This guy has hated me and another ASM ever since he started. My first one-on-one with him lasted over 45 minutes, and nothing good came out of that conversation. I gave him all my input and professionally challenged him, and from the looks of it, he's never faced that before. For context, I was CPD manager; this guy doesn’t touch CPD with a 10-foot pole because he never liked deal with that department. I was written up for some pretty ridiculous stuff. When CPD customers weren’t happy and I couldn’t resolve there problem they want to talk to store manager when they did he goes “ya I don’t understand either just redo it for them, etc” but when they leave he got in face and told me “ I need you to get your CPD customers in check because those are my responsibility and he doesn’t have time to deal with them”. I was written up for trying to order too many supplies supposedly for my department; the order in question was less than $500. I was written up because one of my full-service printers lost its ability to do the ChromoCheck after the IT department messed with it, and that was somehow my fault; also for my department's numbers, like BS and paper promos, rewards, and OPC. That’s just some of the write-ups.

So I got written up for my team not meeting their metrics goals but when he said he was holding everyone accountable, I was the only one getting written up.

I was basically given two options: either get fired or improve metrics. But the metrics I was told to reach were unattainable in a realistic capacity for my department alone; they expected me and my department to get multiple business selects a day, at least 8 paper promos to help out the store, and at least 10 sign-ups a day just from my department alone. I was also basically told in a round about way I need to pad the CPD orders by up-selling them without telling them. If a customer wants basic print, charge them for the upgrade paper type or a lamination fee or something along those lines even though they didn’t want it. So either I get fired for the unrealistic metrics or get fired for doing illegal/shady stuff.

If that wasn’t enough, my DM has been trying to get me, an ASM, and an associate fired for random stuff for a while now. How do I know? He was trying to get my second GM to write us up random stuff on us, and I have receipts to prove it. Was HR contacted about it? Yes, did they do anything about it? No, they swept that sh*t under the rug! Why did my DM want us gone? tbh don’t truly know, but I can assume it was for not kissing ass and not drinking the company Kool-Aid. We were doing things that followed compliance, but it wasn’t my DMs suck-up way.

Tbh I know some people will think that I’m just a bitter former employee; that might partially be true, but the internal politics and antics were getting absolutely ridiculous, payroll being cut, idk how the company that's been stingy about payroll since the dawn of time is $3 million in debt because of payroll. They don’t want spend money on fixing up their stores that are falling apart. This company is in shambles: all the items going on clearance, being overpriced on everything, all the gimmick item being stocked, and a push to make the store basically a placeholder to boost the outside B2B side is getting absurd—the push on paper and programs that more than half the customers see no benefit from.

Tbh I’m glad it’s over; finally in a better place. I will miss my co-workers, but not this company or those entitled/incompetent customers.

Peace out, y’all!

RECYCLING TONER

Hi Everyone,

I just want clarification. If I bring in toner for recycling. I would receive $2 ($3 if business select) only If I make a $10 purchase at the time of submitting them or can I make a $10 purchase within the same calendar month. AND does the $10 purchase have to be made in store or online?

I don't recall this $10 purchase condition being required before. Used to just receive the credit with no purchase required.

Completed Order instructions

My coworker didn’t complete an order correctly, so I have to redo it 💔
However, it’s been completed in the system and customer hasn’t come in with OPC instructions.

Is there a way to check order instructions through Gmil?

This is, thankfully, not due until tomorrow evening. I need to get this printed today, then complete the rest tomorrow. I only see quantity.

Thank you!

Edit:
I finally got that order done. It has been haunting our print center since the 1st but we were out of cardstock until Saturday. I appreciate the replies, I was losing my mind. Thank y’all again :)

Needoh aren't searchable in the scan gun anymore

I've been off since Thursday and went to see if we finally got the Halloween calendar in and sold through them so I can flex over that spot, and there were no hits for "needoh" or "schylling".

Will ODP likely bring back Samsung tablets that run on cellular networks?

Currently, they only have the SM-X210 available which is wifi only.

www.officedepot.com/a/products/8596245/Samsung-Galaxy-Tab-A9-Tablet-11

Others like the SM-X218U say no longer available.

www.officedepot.com/a/products/5603483/Samsung-Galaxy-Tab-A9-SM-X218U

Is it a temporary stock out or do they feel like they can't compete by selling tablets in the price range, so they gave up? About 1-2 years ago, they had about 8 different Samsung models, now only 1 Samsung.

I want to buy a CELLULAR tablet in the $200-300 range from ODP, but can't do it if they don't offer them anymore.

Any ideas or suggestions?

2 things CPD needs

A slip-in sleeve non-lamination pouch sized for social security cards and birth certificates and other documents. Just a little sleeve of stiff, thin plastic we could sell for 3$ or 5$ instead of the coming onslaught of snow birds coming in to ask us to laminate their handicap parking pass or something. Just an idea. small sleeves, big sleeves.

Question ?

Question for someone that’s been with the company for several years : Does anyone know if a manager ( ASM) decided to step down to part time could they still keep there medical and life insurance benefits but pay the monthly premium . Obviously things change but it would be nice to keep the medical and insurance benefits if the monthly premium is not too high .

Cant even go to the restroom.

Remember when we had enough payroll to have an extra 4th or 5th person on staff so you could go take a dump instead of holding it for 5+ hours? I swear this is going to put someone in the ER who feels pressured to stay in position against the pain. Its more messed up because we are entitled by law to have a break IF we want one or IF we need one, and we dont have to take a break, but even if corporate started to force us to take a break, WITH WHAT F ing COVERAGE?! I only ever just need a 15 to use the restroom once or twice a shift but i cant be off the floor that long or everything falls apart and the phone rings for needohs. I stopped eating food before my shift and its taking a toll on me. This 3 on, 3 off, its messing up everyone's health. Half of my staff is working with a flu. I have more call outs because of it the stress of not having support that we get even more inundated with this bs. People dont want to work if they can't go take a piss for 5+ hours and we have no one we can call in. How are you all doing at your stores?

So what is the point of full serve?

Our DM is crawling up our ass about fucking opcs and I'm getting fucking of sick of hearing it.

They want us to run everything as a self service sku or send them to self serve. At this point let's just had small orders away.

I mean seriously, they must be make fucking bank on selling customer data, it's getting out of hand with these out of touch DMs

Say Goodbye to ESS45 App

Well, as some of you may have seen today WFM has changed to a new format. What you may not have seen is the ESS45 (and ESS41 I guess) are no longer being used as well. You have to download a new app, Workcloud Shift, to your phone to access you schedule, clock in /out, etc.

I had no problems getting the app loaded in my phone, and deleted ESS45 as well. Now I find that after I logoff when I access the app I don't have to login again. However, my daughter who works at another one of our stores logged off, she is now being asked to scan a QR code for the app. The old QR code which worked for the ESS41/45 app will not on this one. Does anyone here have the new QR code? Thanks.

Print questions

this is my first Reddit post. please bare with me. but to all of my fellow print managers, how are you accommodating walk ups? my OPC percentage has tanked when I’m not in the building, I’m really the only print ”coworker”, and when I’m on shift I have too many print orders to accommodate walk ups.

my district manager has professionally read me the riot act for my lack of counter orders and OPC drop when I’m not in the building, but there’s only so much I can do in my 8 hours and I cant control the night team when I don’t work nights. And our night team tells customers is “the print center is closed.”

im getting extremely overwhelmed and I’m about to walk out due to how I’m treated about things I genuinely cannot control at this point.

TLDR: to my fellow print managers, how are you controlling your “coworkers” when you’re not in the building and are you dealing with extremely overbearing DMs regarding OPC.

Number Invoices

Does any one know how to number invoices? We have a lot of customers asking for it in our store, and the only way most of us know how it to type the number in one page at a time. There’s gotta be a simple easy way to do it. I know a long time ago I was shown how to using excel and publisher together. But since they took publisher away, I haven’t found another solution.

Edit: I would love to not do it in store. I would love to able to send it to RPC, but the issue isn’t me. It’s everyone else who work in my store. And my manager not caring what happens in CPD. So I’m trying to make things work the best I can. It’d be me against everyone. I’ve been trying to get them to push for online orders cause they still work from the email. It’s a losing battle for me.
