Please Note The Subreddit Description Change

Please note that the description of this subreddit has been modified to add the second paragraph (in bold). I think any change in subreddit’s description should be highlighted by the mods, and so I’m pinning this post.

Current description of r/OaklandFood

Everything food related in Oakland: restaurants, food shopping, pop-ups, catering, farmers’ markets, different cuisines and definitely reviews, especially video reviews of food in Oakland.

Also, food is inherently political and political discourse will not be curtailed in this sub. However, posts and comments clearly violating Reddit Rule 3, such as revealing someone’s personal or confidential information, and instigating harassment based on such will be deleted.

Clove and Hoof space goes to a local team-up, with smoothies in the day and sandwiches at night

Thumbnail bizjournals.com

The empty Clove and Hoof space on Broadway is being split between two local entrepreneurs who are taking a novel approach to the uneven Oakland scene - Drink Thicc smoothies will be served during the day, and Town Beef sandwiches will take over at night, with plans to stay open until 2 a.m.
"We want to show that you can share individual dreams and aspirations in a combined space," Town Beef owner Craig Smith said. "We may have different visions, but we're aligned in our goals – and in our character."

Story should be free to read within Reddit's internal browser.

Restaurants with $0-$20 corkage fee

Does anyone have a list of restaurants in Oakland or Berkeley that charge no or very low (sub $20) corkage fee? I’ve seen other threads attempt to address this but they got very off topic. Plenty of nice restaurants in the $30 range, so not very interested in those. In fact, would rather know about the Thai or Szechuan spot that is permissive.

Sfizio is usually $0, but they tend to rush you out of there.
Champa Garden is also $0 (bring your own wine key; learned this the hard way).

Where to get birthday cake that's "not too sweet"?

I get this request often and have no idea where to go.

Nothing has ever appeased my mother.

EDIT: Oh, I should have added. Any non-chinese cake recs too? Another family member doesn't like the sponge fruit cakes! (I love them though)

Resturant with small party room, excellent menu.

I’m trying to plan ahead for this May event. kid graduates from college the same week of a significant family birthday and of retirement. Trying to find and book an excellent resturant in Berkeley or Oakland for a big family dinner - about 15-20 family members, including very elderly grandmothers. Good vegan options and GF options appreciated. Comfortable family style, does not need to be fancy, but not super noisy (oldsters with hearing loss).
Thank you !

Good Place to Celebrate?

Want to celebrate our engagement on Sunday evening and we are looking for recommendations.

Limitations: Sunday Reservation before 8pm. One of us doesn’t eat pork and can only have a small amount of beef. Love seafood. Under $500 (tips included) for a nice full meal and 3-4 alcoholic beverages between the 2 of us.

Was thinking Sirene, but wanted to see what people might suggest. Thank you!!

What’s your favorite thing at Arizmendi?

Love the pizza, and a friend turned me on to the corn cherry muffin. Perfect balance of sweet and savory and that corny flavor. 👌👌

What am I missing?

Best fried tofu in Bay area ?

Post image

We recently moved to the Bay Area and my wife is craving her favourite fried tofu (pictured above). It’s from a Laotian restaurant called Gai Noi in Minneapolis.

Looking for recommendations where we can find a similar tofu dish in the Bay Area ?

recs for a weekday day date?

my SO and i have a rare, child-free day off together next tuesday and want to make it into a local date day.

any recs for lunchtime spot that feels a little more special / fun than your every day (or is more of a crowd on weekends, etc) but still casual enough that we can show up in our post-gym clothes?

this is one of our very very rare meals out without our kids AND without any major time constraints (aka getting back to work or our kids) so we want to make it a good one!

Flipside closing at the end of the month.

Just learned today from one of the owners that October 31st will be their last day of business. Covid did a number on them that they never could recover from apparently.

If you're looking for classic diner style fare and a good atmosphere for the next two weeks, I can't recommend it enough. Their burgers are excellent, and I'm a huge fan of the buffalo chicken strips.

Cream filled croissants?

7.5 months pregnant here. I try not to overdo it on sweets, but I could really go for some cream filled croissants. Regular vanilla cream sounds good, but so does flavored creams like chocolate, nut or fruit creams. What should I try in the Oakland area? Doesn’t have to be a croissant either, but other types of cream filled pastry recommendations in Oakland would be awesome! Thank you so munch!

Any updates re: old Kaspers on MacArthur?

Post image
38 Upvotes

I recall it was bought by Trybe and briefly open under their ownership, but it has looked closed up for months, and the shipping containers and outdoor space look newer to me (though maybe they’re old and I just never noticed them).

Does anyone have information re: the current state or future plans for this space?
