π Seeking Resources What Am I, Even?
Hello, everyone! I tried to read as much as I could before asking here.
So! Quick backstory: I was raised mostly secular by a Jewish mother and a father that "lost" his Catholic religion when he saw how much suffering there is in the world.
I tried being Christian to appease his mother (my Granny), but that felt... wrong. I tried being Jewish to connect with my mother's roots. That was better, but I still couldn't wrap my head around one God, or gods in general.
I was atheist for 14 years or so (I'm 36 currently). That felt closer, but still not right.
Recently, however, I've become interested in the spirits of my ancestors. Their wisdom, the feelings of love and history that come from thinking about my family through the ages.
I don't believe in objects having spirits, so it's not animism, right? I'm not even super sure I believe in "ghosts walking amongst us" in the traditional sense. I'd like to appease them, just in case, though!
So... what does that leave me? I'm interested in if there's a label for atheist ancestor veneration. Also, if there are any practices you all know of that I can incorporate into my life. Especially if there are any ancient Jewish traditions. I'm scared of talking to a rabbi, and I live in the rural south of the US anyway β not a whole lot of Jews here. π
*EDIT* Thanks, everyone. I have some more thinking and research to do, it seems.
