I work for my local Parks department and this summer the greenhouse sent us artichokes and Swiss chard with this year's flowers.

The chard actually grew really well.

Yeah both artichokes and chard can be really nice in flower gardens

u/weirdoldhobo1978 1d ago

The artichokes never fully bloomed but one of them was like three and a half feet tall. Damn thing looked like a triffid.

I had an artichoke plant for like 2 years and that fucker didn’t grow shit except more leaves

I can almost guarantee multiple people peed in there.

That's among the least offensive things in there.

I’d like to stay innocent thank you.

I’ve already subscribed, you don’t have to try to convince me

And kale is already gross enough without hobo piss as dressing.

The exhaust fumes, tire particles and urine give it that flavour that you just can't get from farm fresh

Doritos R&D Team intensifies

Fun/Not-So-Fun Fact: tires account for roughly 28% of microplastics on land and in the air (second only to textiles/synthetic clothing at 35%).

It's crazy that most clothing now is basically plastic (polyester).

It's funny. I just saw a European's Tiktok about the decorative cabbages in Chicago. It made me question how common/unusual decorative cabbage/kale was

13

u/Muted_Substance2156 1d ago

It is everywhere in New York. It’s pretty cold-hardy but with how ubiquitous it is in the city when I’ve seen it nowhere else I have to imagine one particular landscaper is just a massive fan.

Good thing ornamental cabbage is still an option.

Has that person been heard from since they posted this?

I mean grocery prices the way they are…

Now it’s in a pot. But i have read that you shouldn’t eat kale that has been planted in and by city streets because it absorbs heavy metals and toxins from its surroundings. So dont eat the city kale.

Use a sharp knife to cut the kale leaves off of the stem. Discard the stems, then chop the leaves into smaller pieces. Set aside.

Peel and cut the onion into small dices. Set aside.

In a large pot or dutch oven, melt the fat over medium heat.

Add the onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes.

Gradually stir in the kale, continuously cooking as you do. The kale will shrink a lot!

Add the broth and mustard. Cover the pot with a lid and turn the heat to low. Simmer for about 90 minutes.

Check occasionally to make sure that the kale isn't too dry. If needed, add more broth.

At the end of the cooking time, add the rolled oats and cook for another 10-15 minutes. Season to taste with salt and black pepper.

Serve with red smoked sausage or your favorite meat and boiled, boiled candied, or fried potatoes.

Like most kale recipes, I feel like this would be improved by replacing the kale with literally any other brassica cultivar.

Kale is an ornamental that happens to be edible if you don't mind kidney stones. This is a more appropriate placement than the grocery store.

I googled it and it really sounds like unless you're eating a bunch of raw kale every day it shouldn't be a problem. It's actually widely considered a super-food. Unless you already have kidney problems, the extra potassium shouldn't really be an issue.

Ok, but hear me out, it's also disgusting.

(And it's not the potassium that's an issue, it's the oxalic acid.)

I mean as I said, unless you're literally eating kale every day in large amounts or have a kidney condition, it's not an issue. Kale has 2-20 mg of oxalic acid per 100 grams which isn't actually that high. In comparison, spinach has up to 750 mg/100g.

I definitely get why you'd find it repulsive though haha (depends on how you cook it tho), but you shouldn't spread misinfo to justify your distaste for it.

Sure but the good Lord made butter for a reason.

Same with begonias. Though it didn't stop Black Forager from nipping a few flowers off when she found them in front of a business.

I just watched that video

I love her so much! She's fun and educational and unabashedly, whimsically herself. As soon as I can, I'm buying her book!

Until about 10-15 years ago, Pizza Hut was the biggest buyer of kale. They didn't serve it to eat. They used it to decorate the salad bar
