Its like 2-3 cans a day every single day even if its yearly
25
u/Maleficent-Hawk-318 21h ago
That's a very plausible number, though. I've known people who easily average that many drinks at a bar, because they go have at least 1-2 most nights of the week, and on weekends they'll drink heavily to bump that average up.
Used to date one of them, in fact. Highly paid engineer in a low cost of living area so had plenty of cash to spend, very social so he found a bar to become a regular at, and also definitely was a functional alcoholic. The owner of the bar once joked about how he was all set to hate me, since my boyfriend didn't go nearly as often once we started dating and it hurt the business.
There was actually a whole group of engineers like that, you could go into that bar any night of the week and find most of them. One wound up marrying one of the bartenders, lol.

Which likely wasn’t the case it was more like he went a couple times a week or once a week and drank all of them in one go. Which shame on that restaurant for letting happen is the case

Depends if it’s profit or sales

u/Bxk__ 1d ago
I still think even if it were sales, 6000 bucks of White Claw a month is probably a little bit unhealthy
95
23
u/WanderingFlumph 1d ago
That would be about $200 per day spent, even at an outrageous $10 a can that's 20 drinks a day every day for a month.
17
u/SobiTheRobot 1d ago
If it was monthly, and based on another comment, that'd be 25 cans a day...
If it's quarterly, that's still 8 cans a day...
10
u/JohnBGaming 1d ago
Well if it's annually the dude is putting up 2 cans a day which is the most reasonable number, so we can assume that

u/jackaroo1344 1d ago
I wonder how much ai has hit the artists out there making money off furry porn. It was apparently a serious money maker for a lot of artists.
Now that furries can get porn of their animals free on ai I imagine that's put a dent in the artist community.
22
u/lavendel_havok 1d ago
Furry is a pretty tight bit community and as a whole extremely against AI. Lots of commissioners are if not friends with at least on friendly terms with the artists they regularly commission and are actively purposely supporting friends, and AI art is also just lacking. Commercial artists are much more vulnerable than fandom artists

Had a single customer at a store who was responsible for $20,000 in sales a month. He brought in something like 1/20th of the profit for that department every month on his own. Covid disrupted the supply lines for the 3 things he bought and it was easily measurable.
26
u/Mysterious-Falcon221 1d ago
Was he drinking $1000 bottles of scotch?
40
u/TerribleBudget 1d ago
he was buying $700-1600 of oil per day, and oil has a huge ass margin.
16
u/Mysterious-Falcon221 1d ago
All the other comments were about alcohol so I thought you meant he was spending 22k a month on booze. Lol, I was having a hard time imagining that.
7
7
u/queerkidxx 1d ago
Did he own a restaurant? How does someone go through that much oil a day
20
u/TerribleBudget 1d ago
Truck oil. He ran his own shop and it was more profit for him to buy from us in 2.5g bottles than to make a contract with a company to install a large tank to get serviced. He'd buy it from us and use it during his truck services where, as part of the service, it was marked up some ungodly amount again.
Right when the supply started coming back a while after covid he would show up and buy a whole pallet of the stuff every few days alongside his normal 1-2 shopping carts full.
6
82
u/getahaircut8 1d ago
I mean people also tend to order what they see, if there is a regular customer who always is in drinking white claw - they're probably driving other customers to drink white claw.
43
u/lopingwolf 1d ago
And you know that dude was buying rounds or drinks for others. So while he may have averaged purchasing 20 a day, he likely didn't drink them all.

u/naturalinfidel 1d ago
Reminds me of the story that the local supermarket requested to be notified when the brother leaves for college so that they don't overstock on chocolate milk.

I'm fairly certain I was fueling a particular convenient store's entire Red Bull sales at one point.
234
u/Fuzzy-Butterscotch86 1d ago
I've seen this post a few times now, and every single time it solidifies my lifetime refusal to drink at bars.
Assuming this is a mid level bar the average cost would be $8 a can and the customer would've bought 772 cans in whatever span of time elapsed.
The same money spent on buying average priced 24 packs equates 4,940 cans.
49
u/Dxpehat 1d ago
Don't think about it in terms of the product only. You pay for the table, the ambience, the music and somebody to clean the glasses afterwards. Also if you have kids or live with your parents or whatever, you can get wasted somewhere where nobody is going to be ashamed of you lol
9
u/Fuzzy-Butterscotch86 1d ago
All valid points. But for me none of that justifies a 700% markup.

Honestly the alcohol is just an incidental (though delightful) reason I go to bars. I’m usually in a bar 4-5 days a week but I hardly ever drink when I’m at home. Most of my bar friends don’t like drinking at home either.

u/AltForObvious1177 1d ago
People drink at a bar to socialize.
17
11
3
u/MainichiFuwaFuwa 1d ago
Some do it to try and hide the extent of their alcoholism from their family, not realizing that the huge amounts of money gone after coming home fall-down drunk each night are kind of a giveaway.
-26
u/Fuzzy-Butterscotch86 1d ago
I know. But it's so easy to socialize without dropping hundreds on overpriced booze.
For most people.
70
u/AltForObvious1177 1d ago
Is it? Because, statistically, over half of adults don't socialize at all.
18
14
u/WeevilWeedWizard 1d ago

17
u/Dull_Amphibian5124 1d ago
It's in leisure if you care to paruse. But it's at 31% participating in in-person interaction for leisure.
2
u/Evening-Stage5320 1d ago
Sorry, but this article doesnt really support the idea that most people aren't social at all. It says that on an average day, 31% of people engaged in in-person interaction for leisure. If every participant of this study 'was social' and hung out with a friend twice a week, then on any given day that's 28.6% of people. So it's easy to see where that 31% comes from even if most people are social (and busy, who has time to socialize more than twice a week??)
Also ''in-person interaction for leisure' is waaaay too broad and open to interpretation to draw any conclusions from. Hanging out at home with your family is 'in-person interaction for leisure' to me, but if everyone agreed with me on that the number would have been way higher than 31 %
Okay ramble over sorry my pet peeve is statistics applied incorrectly
2
u/Dull_Amphibian5124 1d ago
Oh for sure, like that doesn't even account for probable sampling bias, or the fact that it is self reported. But, I do think the trend, duration, etc going down says something.
Additionally I think that going to the bar for 4 hrs once a week would put you into that 31% on an average day because it's time spent socializing averaged through the week. So, if that was your only activity and you did it once a month instead you wouldn't be included. But still all of this is a self report.
12
u/ehs06702 1d ago
Most people just have a few drinks (if that) while socializing, so to act like this person's drinking habits are the norm is odd.
-2
u/Fuzzy-Butterscotch86 1d ago
I'm not acting like it's the norm at all.
But even if this person only bought 6 of these drinks while at a bar they were still grossly overcharged, which is the only point I was making.
2
u/ehs06702 1d ago
Then you should have communicated that specific sentiment instead of being judgemental.
2
u/Fuzzy-Butterscotch86 1d ago
No part of anything i said was judgemental. Every comment I made was about the money being overspent. Even when stating that people don't need to drink to have a conversation i pointed to the cost of the booze as the reason, not any kind of personal failings.
"It's so easy to socialize without dropping hundreds on overpriced booze" is a critique of the price you pay at the bar, not the desire to drink socially. You can drink at home or at a party and not overpay. You can also go to a bar without burning through hundreds of dollars by not drinking alcohol without sacrificing any social aspect of the experience. Or by drinking in moderation, which the White Claw drinker clearly wasn't.
People wanting to take it as judgemental may want to look inward. The cost was the only subject of my judgement the entire time.

Such a reddit moment for a comment like this to get downvoted. Apparently claiming that talking to people without being drunk is easy is incredibly controversial.
Redditors never beating the allegations
0
u/Fuzzy-Butterscotch86 1d ago
I know, lol. Made me laugh too see it when I got back to my phone.
I even added the allowance that it's not easy for some people, because my wife is absolutely one of those people, but still rubbed people the wrong way enough to justify their downvotes.
-25
u/Fletch71011 1d ago
Hot take, you don't need to drink at bars or can just drink before you go. Or honestly go anywhere else, alcohol kills more people in the US than every other drug combined, and you're willing to spend like 10x what it costs to consume it? It's an actual poison and carcinogen.
15
u/The_Afton_Rabbit 1d ago
frankly, as a recovering alcoholic who's nearly died from alcohol poisoning & withdrawal too many times to comfortably count, even im sick of this "it's poison! it's a carcinogen!" shit.
like yeah, it's true, but that's not the point. lots of fun stuff is addictive, unhealthy, dangerous, etc. if you cut out everything that has negative consequences, your life will be boring & unfulfilling. everything has pros & cons, risks & benefits. you have to weigh them & decide what you do & dont want to do.
if alcohol makes you feel physically & mentally awful & addiction is ruling your life, the cons arent worth the pros. but if youre just grabbing a few drinks in moderation to elevate a fun night with your friends every now & then, the bonding & memories that make life rich & beautiful are worth the potential health repercussions.
same with the money aspect. no self-respecting alcoholic goes to the fucking bar, but as an occasional treat when chilling with the homies? the novelty & the experience of hanging out somewhere new can be worth it.
moderation. responsibility. thats all you need

Ya, maybe I was too harsh. I was abusing alcohol myself after getting in a car accident, but you're right. I was stashing bottom shelf vodka and drinking alone constantly. The stuff fucks you up beyond belief though and the more I learned, I realized if you want to abuse substances, like nearly anything else is better. Alcohol is one of the worst drugs out there and we treat it like it's normal.
8
u/myychair 1d ago
So you’re an example of why it’s better to drink in bars. Social drinking while paying more to drink is a lot safer than blacking out by yourself from your secret stash of booze.
I get that you’re maybe trying to be helpful in your first comment but the tone isn’t great and now you appear a little hypocritical
3
u/Fletch71011 1d ago
I don't think I'm being hypocritical. If I could go back in time and tell myself one thing, it would be to never take a sip of alcohol for the rest of my life. I want people to learn from my mistakes.
5
u/The_Afton_Rabbit 1d ago
replying to this one too, because it hits hard.
i understand the sentiment, but i dont think anyone has ever listened to that kind of advice. they need to witness or experience it. most alcoholics wouldnt have listened if they were warned not to drink, or told how badly it would affect them. especially if it was what one turned to to cope with physical or emotional trauma. when one is desperate, momentary relief trumps longterm consequences.
an aversion to alcohol cant be lectured into someone. it comes from watching loved ones suffer, or suffering oneself. it's time to let that sentiment go, because it isnt helping you or others.
2
u/The_Afton_Rabbit 1d ago
im sorry youve been there too. alcoholism is hell on earth. ive spent far too many nights chugging bottom shelf vodka alone in my room, abandoned warehouses, in the bathroom at work, etc.
but it honestly gets easier once you see alcohol as an option that youre choosing not to partake in, but that others can if they want to. it gives some sense of control & autonomy when the cravings get bad. it's easier when youre able to see it as a fact of life & not solely as a temptation or a danger. it sounds counterintuitive, but seeing it as something normal means the feelings associated with it are less intense, which makes it easier to make the intentional choice to not drink. it makes it less stressful to be in places where others are drinking too.
your heart's in the right place. you just dont want anyone to end up like us. but it's so much easier once you stop seeing alcohol as dangerous, as crazy as that sounds. i wish you well with your recovery

Wouldn’t you have that same problem with most typical beers and coolers then?

Probably, but when I drank I was mostly a liquor drinker; 2-3 glasses of any decent single malt Scotch was my happy place.

u/40MillyVanillyGrams 1d ago
Drinking 12 12oz White Claws at 5.0% ABV is nearly equivalent to an entire 750ml bottle of 80-proof liquor.
That much alcohol over 4 hours for a 180 lb male gives an estimated 0.19 BAC. About 2.5 times over the legal limit. Dude is not fine. Dude has a problem.

If you don't like the drink and drink slowly
Otherwise 2 an hour will get you drunk at a normal rate. 3 an hour an express rate and 4 an hour will get you blasted quick smart
