u/Rule_Ct_5293, there weren't enough votes to determine the quality of your post...

That second poster looks like a dvd cover for something you would buy from a bootleg stall round the corner for $2

216

u/ThirdAltAccounts Aug 18 '26

Exactly the kind of cover I would have found online back in the day and put in a dvd case for one of my many pirated legally acquired movies

45

u/yamanagashi Aug 18 '26

It’s not a proper addition to the shelf if the back cover is not written is Slavic

15

u/WaitForItTheMongols Aug 18 '26

... Do you mean Cyrillic?

62

u/snoogle20 Aug 18 '26

These abominations were the official Blu-ray covers for several years. The Sony home video department hates this trilogy.

7

u/epsilon14254 Aug 19 '26

See even those are better than the crap up top

8

u/Schism213 Aug 18 '26

It’s the thumbnail used for digital copies. I don’t believe anyone actually printed these.

2

u/FunkySeeFunkyDo_ Aug 19 '26

This reminds me of the time I begged my dad to get me a Harry Potter bootleg from some guy at the Thanksgiving Day Parade (like a week after the movie premiered). When I put it on, it was just a camcorder recording of the movie trailer on someone’s tv with some people fighting in the background 😭

1

u/JimTobin89 Aug 21 '26

I literally just got this movie cover by redeeming my movies anywhere cooies of the Spiderman trilogy.

Its a travesty.

Dear God what am I looking at 💀

5

u/Scavgraphics Aug 19 '26

George Harrison's album, Cloud Nine which is quite great.

1

u/BrickBuster2552 Aug 20 '26

He's got his mind set on you.

6

u/MySchoolsWifiSucks Aug 18 '26

This is better that the marvel version

349

u/ImprintVector Aug 18 '26

Holy shit that is a huge downgrade

129

u/ntc2e Aug 18 '26

i'm not sure how people don't understand this is the result of streaming services and how online search works on TV's nowadays.

we have 3 different Spiderman movie franchises at this point in the last 20 years, and most normies don't have a clue which is which. Spiderman 2? The Amazing Spiderman 2? Spiderman Far From Home?

they will however know if they see Tobey McGuire's face which series they are watching.

just like how if you go look up the Harry Potter movies, they have the number on the poster because not everyone can remember that the 4th movie is Goblet of Fire and the 6th movie is the Half Blood Prince.

56

u/username32768 Aug 18 '26

they will however know if they see Tobey McGuire's face which series they are watching.

They really should have gone for a still image from this scene. And nothing else.

https://giphy.com/gifs/oW4csEbiMzVjq

6

u/jackinsomniac Aug 19 '26

This is the correct answer, don't give a fuck what the other guy was rambling about

24

u/SirLesbian Aug 18 '26

I get wanting to put his face on there... I just don't understand why it has to look so bad.

6

u/Stormwrath52 Aug 19 '26

I mean, I kinda get it in the case of movies with subtitles instead of numbers, because most people aren't gonna remember the actual order.

But like, this poster has the number of the movie and the date it's from, and I feel like that's enough information to figure it out or google it.

Like, I know it's the "there's a significant amount of overlap between the smartest bears and the dumbest people" type of consideration, but like, if someone can't open the trashcan and leaved their trash on the ground that's bad for the environment; if people can't be bothered to figure out which movie they're about to watch, or in some cases pay to rent, there is only a consequence for them. And I think maybe we can have nice posters and let some people figure it out.

12

u/Private_Kyle Harry Potter Aug 18 '26

Its like looking at Indian VFX images

1.1k

u/Henchman4Hire Aug 18 '26

I have never seen that second poster in my life.

907

u/MissingLink000 Aug 18 '26

That's understandable. it's from within the last week or so. Sony updated the posters for all the spider-man movies on digital storefronts/streaming platforms

573

u/Henchman4Hire Aug 18 '26

Ah, then yes, that is probably the biggest movie poster downgrade in human history.

216

u/nerdystoner25 Aug 18 '26

70

u/JakeWalker102 Aug 18 '26

s y n e r g y

68

u/Ok-Computer-8726 Aug 18 '26

I'm not saying this is good, but it's so very casual streamers can tell which movie they are watching. The original poster doesn't give a low informed customer much clue about which of the like 10+ Spider-man movies they are watching.

"What is this?! Where is Zendaya?!"

67

u/Any-Emu8824 Aug 18 '26

You know, I wanted to disagree with you. But, I remembered a week or two ago when I went to see the new Spider-Man with my dad.

He was silent for like 20 minutes after the credits rolled. I asked him for his thoughts on the movie to try to break the silence. All he said was

“Where the fuck was McGuire? And why was Mary Jane not a redhead?”

I decided I didn’t want to open that can of worms so I just said “yeah, I idk pops. That’s Hollywood for ya. Just changing actors with no reason”.

43

u/Seiridis Aug 18 '26

The idea of you father thinking it's a direct continuation of the last movie with McGuire and being left with that conclusion up to right now due to your ambiguous reply is sending me. 😆

18

u/Any-Emu8824 Aug 18 '26

I think my dad just lost the ability to retain new information in like 2006. He got laid off literally 24 hours after signing on a 30 year mortgage he couldn’t actually afford and he’s just kinda been confused and out of touch ever since.

7

u/Seiridis Aug 18 '26

Oh god. This took a turn. ☹️ So sorry this happened to your father.

6

u/MikeHunt1237 Aug 18 '26

Innit, I bet they didn't wanna spend much on the new posters being that it's largely done for convenience

3

u/doogie1111 Aug 18 '26

Its basically a thumbnail to appear on streaming lineup. Yeah it looks worse, but it communicates which one it is at a glance a lot better.

5

u/clintnorth Aug 18 '26

Probably so people would know Tobey Maguire is in it. There’s a whole bunch of different Spider-Man reboots at this point.

69

u/Fast-Prior4504 Aug 18 '26

I thought the second poster was made by someone who was trying to prove a point that movie posters are shitty nowadays due to the Endgame effect😭No way that poster is unironic its horrendous

14

u/Stahlios Aug 18 '26

Holy shit I saw those like 10 different times on social media and everytime I thought the source was just that someone made them for the memes, like "shit was better before, imagine old poster with MCU posters style".

Never ever thought that it was something official.

8

u/Tuomas90 Aug 18 '26

Holy shit! That's disgusting.

I thought it was fan-art.

1

u/niazine Aug 18 '26

That's real?? Looks like the fanmade ones

1

u/Opening-Garlic-8967 Aug 18 '26

WHAT, I thought it was just a poorly made meme to mock newer poster trends

1

u/Marvl101 Aug 18 '26

See this is why Plex let's you pick your own posters

1

u/IdioticZacc Aug 19 '26

Wait thats an official poster? The bad cropping on the venom spider man made me think this was just someone making an example of what spider man 3 poster would look like in modern time

1

u/clydefrog811 Aug 19 '26

Why would they update the posters of 20+ year old movies?

1

u/Mrdemian3 Aug 19 '26

Disney+ also has a bunch of posters that are much less interesting than the original ones. I especially hate the ones that have just the main character/characters in front of a basic background

12

u/AccurateJerboa Aug 18 '26

So the real answer is that this style is much more popular in asia.

I worked for a mobile game company, and our marketing always had to be clean for America and Europe, but wildly busy, with as many character faces as possible, for the Asian market.

That's what shat happened and why posters are now just a series of faces and colors. Different markets respond differently to design.

54

u/Rhokai Aug 18 '26 edited Aug 18 '26

I think the idea is what it would look like if it was made today.

Edit: apparently they are real, but i’m in a state of disbelief

8

u/eydirctiviyg Aug 18 '26

I don't know, that right one looks like packaging for an action figure line from the 2000s

4

u/RoutineCloud5993 Aug 18 '26

It's only been used on streaming services. And even then services tend to use onenof many options depending on which one it thinks will make you watch.

2

u/Prudent_Particular25 Aug 18 '26

I have. the cd came in a sealable plastic bag and the art printed on paper...

46

u/Oturanthesarklord Aug 18 '26

"Endgamification"

It's called a Floating Head Poster, they were very common in the Golden Age of Hollywood. Some of the most iconic Movie Posters of All Time were Floating Head Posters.

-3

u/Cthulhuareyou Aug 18 '26

But they used to be painted and had more to it then just  photoshopped slop.

18

u/Oturanthesarklord Aug 18 '26

That's not new either.

2

u/Cthulhuareyou Aug 18 '26

Yeah , and it was definitely the start of them getting lazy, but there's still some thought and design put into it.

251

u/globmand Aug 18 '26

True. Just look at this Endgamified piece of garbage. All endgame's fault. Completely.

79

u/Kinky-Cookie-Cutter Aug 18 '26

People just wanna blame marvel for stuff cause it's huge and popular.

Also... i haven't seen that many floating heads type posters... i'm guessing specifically BECAUSE Endgame did it and that was like, the final stage of it. So now it's more minimalist stuff like the Backrooms poster or that other one i can't remember now lol... Feed?

3

u/SmugglingPlums Aug 18 '26

So what you're saying is that it's Disney's fault then. I can agree with that!

28

u/bohemu Aug 18 '26

This is what they're all trying to replicate but because the stars have egos (or contracts with egos) everyone's gotta be on the poster at the same size and position like they fight about the names on posters so now we get the BS version that's like fighter game selection screen.

And also, like someone else said, so people who can't or won't read know who's in the movie they're about to watch because mainstream stream users or moviegoers just want dopamine and don't read up on plot or cast beforehand.

18

u/casual_creator Aug 18 '26

This is basically it. Everything, and I mean everything you can possibly imagine related to a movie is negotiated by the studio and an actor’s agent, included the order of their name on a poster and how prominent they are on it.

And that’s a huge part in why the floating head poster style became in fashion - the marketing team wasn’t/isn’t privy to those aforementioned decisions until late in the game, so the floating head design made it really easy to update the poster as needed.

“Sharon Stone got her name first? No problem. Oh, now Dustin Hoffman’s head gets to be bigger and center stage ? Got it. Poster will be ready this afternoon.”

This type of flexibility just isn’t possible with better posters like what we used to get from Drew Struzan (RIP).

12

u/Cthulhuareyou Aug 18 '26

That's actually painted and thought was put into it.

5

u/globmand Aug 18 '26

The point isn't debating the quality of the poster, the point is that the format and layout of the poster isn't some new, marvel, endgame enshittyfication. Yes, the one above is clearly shitty, and I don't particularly like marvel, but acting like it's endgames fault is rediculous

5

u/Cthulhuareyou Aug 18 '26

No, but the quality is definitely part of it.

There's nothing wrong with the floating head design if done well. Marvel just half asses all their posters. Marvel has an entire roster of artists and of Art going back almost 90 years and they still half—ass their film posters.

If the floating head was done well (like the Struzan star wars art) people wouldn't be complaining about it.

4

u/Shenanigans80h Aug 18 '26

Tbf one of the major problems with MCU posters is that every single hero has their mask off and gawks in the distance. The poster on the left is all about Spider-Man whereas the other one is Tobey Maguire looking into my soul

1

u/OldSpray9986 Aug 19 '26

I mean, on top of this, ROTJ has new posters and 'covers' from 1995, 1997, 2004 and multiple later re-releases, a lot of which would look like a downgrade compared to this poster, too -- if you put up the same meme with the 1983 poster and 2004 DVD cover, it's the same trend as this but nobody would be blaming Disney or Endgame. Home video covers are usually a downgrade from a movie poster unless they reuse poster art but it's an old trend.

0

u/StarSpangldBastard Aug 18 '26 edited Aug 19 '26

there are things going on in all of these classic star wars posters beyond just the characters, and more importantly they actually look good. there's an art style to them rather than than the characters just being what look like screen shots from the movie

1

u/Cthulhuareyou Aug 18 '26

Yup. Drew Struzan. Legend.

63

u/megazordsez Aug 18 '26

This was a problem before endgame.like everything in life, trends come and go

17

u/ThatchedRoofCottage Aug 18 '26

I was gonna say I feel like Star Wars movies always had a version of the poster that was just “here are a bunch of characters in the movie”

I’m not saying I like the new poster, but I would not be surprised if there’s some market research that says the people respond to it

78

u/WorldsWeakestMan Aug 18 '26

If Spider-Man 3 was as good as its poster then I’d have left the theater happy in 2007 on opening night.

26

u/RealPrinceJay Aug 18 '26

Spider-Man 3 is a bad movie, but I can’t imagine leaving the theater unhappy after seeing it. It’s genuinely hilarious and a great time

6

u/WorldsWeakestMan Aug 18 '26

Unhappy about parts of it, not all, it could have been so much more. I was a big Venom fan at the time and they made a mockery of him is mostly the reason.

3

u/casual_creator Aug 18 '26

That was me. One of the very few movies where I left completely disappointed when it was over.

3

u/poland626 Aug 18 '26

I mean, back then it was riding on the tails of 2. We wanted a scene to top the train scene and didnt even get that

2

u/Holow4499 Aug 18 '26

When I was a kid, spider-man 3 was my favourite because I really liked how the symbiote costume looked, but now.. 3 is still my favourite just because of being the most fun to watch, even though the story/plot is nowhere near as well put together as the other 2

2

u/Random_Critical Aug 19 '26

I'm gonna put some dirt in your eye

5

u/Max_Speed_Remioli Aug 18 '26

That movie is probably up there for top 5 biggest movie disappointments of my life.

-7

u/gooch_norris_ Aug 18 '26

And my daughter would be fat

2

u/ManOfTurtles2118 Aug 19 '26

What does that even mean?

14

u/Win32error Aug 18 '26

Not that this isn’t terrible since its apparently real, but movies have since a pretty long time had multiple posters afaik. Usually there’s some more stylized, and at least one with the entire main cast on it. The style of the latter has been getting used more as far as I can tell, probably especially with marvel because a selling point of the movies is which heroes are in them.

I very much prefer posters do the more artistic thing, but when it comes to marketing iirc it is pretty important to show off the cast properly. Or I remember reading about research they did many years ago, which is the reason you don’t see a lot of truly stylized posters anymore.

9

u/FerretAres Aug 18 '26

Shoot even the original trilogy star wars posters did the floating heads design

3

u/Invisibleb0y Aug 18 '26

It was so iconic that it became an unfortunate standard.

15

u/cockaskedforamartini Aug 18 '26

"Endgamification" when Endgame was just replicating what Star Wars did 40 years prior.

7

u/_forum_mod Aug 18 '26

Why did they start doing that?

5

u/julz1215 Aug 18 '26

Why are we pretending like this started with endgame? Star Wars posters have been like that for decades.

5

u/SystemAny4819 Aug 18 '26

Because modern movie bad

Marvel = slop, and they’re the reason movies are bad in 2026

Recency bias but for capeshit instead lol

8

u/Jimbobsama Aug 18 '26

Could be worse - this set up but in the blue and orange trend that was popular in the late 2010s

5

u/EmperorFooFoo Aug 18 '26

The hatred of Marvel for trends they didn’t start needs to be studied

3

u/EmilePleaseStop Aug 19 '26

It’s a way for tedious nerds to sneer at ‘normies’ but pretend that it’s cultural critique

6

u/FangornLeghorn Aug 18 '26

Why even change it? The release image is a classic and perfect already.

8

u/maxpenny42 Aug 18 '26

If you look at all the other movie posters it becomes clear. They’re trying to more easily differentiate which movie is which. Most of the old posters look interchangeable. Doesn't show which actor played Spidey, doesn’t show villains in most cases. The new version is bland and ugly but it does quickly and visually show you which movie you’re clicking on.

7

u/Eleeveeohen Aug 18 '26

Idk...this explanation isn't very effective for manufacturing outrage

2

u/CrazySnipah Aug 18 '26

Thats a good point. They make a bunch of different posters for each film, too.

13

u/Doomsday40 Aug 18 '26 edited Aug 18 '26

That second one isn't an official poster. It's fan made

Edit: fuck me it's official, just released many years later. Wow that's fucking horrendous

26

u/nonamehendrix Aug 18 '26

No actually marvel released posters in this style for all three spidermen. These are official.

3

u/Doomsday40 Aug 18 '26

Holy shit. I'll leave my original comment up but if that's the case....who the fuck approved that 😂

1

u/OldSpray9986 Aug 19 '26

I believe it was Sony.

5

u/purplebeanz3457 Aug 18 '26

It’s the poster used on all streaming services for all the Spider-Man movies, at least in Canada.

6

u/CarmenxXxWaldo Aug 18 '26

My favorite is when theres a black person they have to remove them for the version that gets released in China.  And everyone treats china like their old crazy grandpa "haha you old scamp at it again.".

1

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '26

[removed] — view removed comment

11

u/Laphad Aug 18 '26

Only one I can think of is the Force Awakens trailer where they removes Jon Boyega, and how he stopped working for a perfume company because they removed him from their Chinese ads for a white(? Maybe Chinese i can't remember) actor despite him being the spokesperson

9

u/Invisibleb0y Aug 18 '26

Black panther too. Chinese poster he had his mask on, while the original poster has chadwick with his mask off

3

u/CommanderFuzzy Aug 18 '26

Didn't they also have the new Captain America as a silhouette in some promotional material? Or facing away from the camera?

I know they edit out gay people too, some media was chopped to bits when distributed there

2

u/InflationLeft Harry Potter Aug 18 '26

1

u/Laphad Aug 18 '26

From your website it seems to be that it was only available in China?

2

u/skeks_ Aug 18 '26

Not much to be studied. I used to make key art for tv and the studios always wanted the talents faces to be prominent. It was very limiting creativly.

2

u/Bagelbuttboi Aug 18 '26

It looks like they left a space for Harry Osborne in the top left and edited him out due to James Franco’s allegations and didn’t bother restructuring the poster

Legendary L edit

2

u/ConfectionTotal8660 Aug 18 '26

One sec, I know I have an explanation for this.

Basically, people see famous people, people wanna watch movie

2

u/eshian Aug 18 '26

I'm betting it has to do with actors requiring poster space in their contracts.

2

u/EMB93 Aug 18 '26

I heard somewhere that the floating head posters are a result of many mig stars having a clause in their contract saying that their face needs to be on the poster. So once enough big stars are in the movie these kinds of posters become inevitable.

2

u/CardiologistNo616 Aug 18 '26

It's because they want to put all of the big named actors into the poster to make people want to see the movie. Meanwhile the old poster was aura farming.

2

u/Your-Momigator Aug 19 '26

Why he looking at me like that bro 😭🥀

4

u/Zacharacamyison Aug 18 '26

Enshitification for no reason whatsoever

2

u/ptvlm Aug 18 '26

That happens a lot, sadly. Lots of movies with great posters ended up with a half assed Photoshop job thrown together in 5 minutes for a release on dvd and so on. Check out the original poster for Zardoz, for example, then the laughable dvd and VHS covers

2

u/D_Simmons Aug 18 '26

Now when you're scrolling you have no idea which movie is which because they all have the same poster. So stupid.

1

u/TsuntsunRevolution Aug 18 '26

Floating head posters tend to be pretty shit, but I don't think even the newest Spider-man used that style at all.

1

u/Shayden998 Aug 18 '26

Well, yeah. The first one's shit. It doesn't even show all the actors. /j

1

u/the_millenial_falcon Aug 18 '26

It's like they all started using the Star Wars poster format.

1

u/Significant-Way9330 Aug 18 '26

Why is he shooting a web from his lowered hand in the second poster.

1

u/Tuomas90 Aug 18 '26

He's just excited to see MJ, okay?

Give the guy a break, man. It's Kirstun Dunst FFS!

You think you wouldn't shoot your web-fluid early?

1

u/cookieaddictions Aug 18 '26

The one on the right looks fan made. Are we sure it’s official?

1

u/Novaer Aug 18 '26

Yeah, I'm somewhat of a Spiderman 3 poster girlie myself.

1

u/BoonDoggle4 Aug 18 '26

Is that a poster or a streaming service thumbnail?

1

u/Court_Jester13 Aug 18 '26

Hey, they've still got space for Harry above MJ

1

u/Substantial_Pop_5673 Aug 18 '26

This crap is to help people who are trying to find the right Spiderman movies now that there have been 3 different Spiderman franchises in our life times. Just last week my sister in law was looking for Spiderman 1 with Tobey in it and she started watching Homecoming first before realizing it wasn't it. They are catering to the people who don't know anything about the movies.

1

u/sadsackle Aug 18 '26

Whose nephew did the second one?

1

u/mokrieydela Aug 18 '26

I'm so glad I have the dvd of those movie. That cover is one of my favorite movie images. Why change it

1

u/Bram-D-Stoker Aug 18 '26

I suspect the poster is to work better for streaming services. It shows which actor to immediately tell you which series it is a part of. So from a UX perspective I imagine it is much better for casual users that didn't grow up with the toby movies

1

u/Aggravating-Chef9562 Aug 18 '26

The one on the right looks like a ugandan remake lmaoo.

1

u/Dangerous_Reporter14 Aug 18 '26

The first one is trying to sell the fantasy. The other is trying to sell tickets.

1

u/_b1ack0ut Aug 18 '26

I don’t think this is an endgame thing lol, considering this format of poster had been going on for decades before that

But sure, ‘endgamification’

1

u/Jayhuntermemes Aug 18 '26

Ah yes, Star Wars Poster Syndrome

1

u/Redditeer28 Aug 18 '26

I'm trying to figure out where the Web in Spidey's right hand is supposed to be going.

1

u/Krimreaper1 Aug 18 '26

The posters are designed to be able to be easily identified as thumbnails on video apps at a distance. Not to be artistic, that’s why they suck.

1

u/Tuomas90 Aug 18 '26

The original is something you wanted as a huge poster and hang it up in your bedroom.

The new one...definitely not.

1

u/azul360 Aug 18 '26

I mean tbf the one on the right is pretty much just movie posters nowadays. The one on the left is back when movies cared and you'd get posters with actual creativity behind them.

1

u/N4hami Aug 18 '26

Isn't this more the "star-warsification" of movie posters.
I'm curious what would the difference between the two be. Cause this looks like the trend star wars started first to me. (even if it started before the spiderman 3 movie orginally came out)

1

u/Fire257 Aug 18 '26

That new movie poster gives me 2000s Memphis rapper album cover vibes. Just floating heads and people that are in the project floating over some bs

1

u/Shen_ishere Aug 18 '26

No way I thought that second one was a parody 😭

1

u/Prince_Marf Aug 18 '26

It's really the Star Warsification. The poster for A New Hope is probably the most famous movie poster of all time. Makes sense that uninspired designers would just copy it.

1

u/IFrame- Aug 18 '26

They dumbed it down for simpletons so they don’t get confused and expect Tom Holland to be in the movie

1

u/HoldenOrihara Aug 18 '26

Wasn't posters like this since the force awakens?

1

u/BlackberryAny1307 Aug 18 '26

One of the best movie posters of all time to one of the worst.

1

u/nick2k23 Aug 18 '26

The Spiderman 3 poster can't be real, looks like I made it, it's so bad

1

u/mr_falkone84 Aug 18 '26

Maybe it's so you know which fing one it is out of the litany of movies now.

1

u/TrapaholicDixtapes Aug 18 '26

Idk. Going from Bob Peak and John Alvin to whatever intern made this garbage in photoshop is pretty egregious, imo.

1

u/bijosnafu Aug 18 '26

Even bro looks sad on the cover

1

u/lorca_guernica Aug 18 '26

I like how Venom is the little devil on Peter’s shoulder telling him to be naughty.

1

u/Scavgraphics Aug 19 '26

It is studied. It's called "Marketing".

1

u/MechaGodzilla876 Aug 19 '26

This is so weird considering they already had streaming exclusive posters like this

My dude, they’ve been making shitty posters like this since the moment Photoshop got cheap, Endgame didn’t even remotely popularize this kind of thing.

I mean, I get it, people who haven’t seen a single piece of media made before 2012 have to pathologically blame everything they don’t like in movies on Marvel. But this is beyond low-effort.

They need to differentiate it with Tom Holland trilogy that just released. Hence why they unmasked spidey to show Tobey and the female lead is not Zendaya

1

u/spazzing Aug 19 '26

With love, that looks like Tobey's Driver's License photo.

Endgamification lolol look up photoshop blockbuster posters and you will see this has been a weird trend for much longer than endgame

Totally agreed on the downgrade, but a lot of movies do not and have not had their poster art used for home video for decades. All the classic "Star Wars" had different VHS covers in 1995 and 1997, DVD covers in 2004 and 2006, etc. that did not use the classic poster art. The "Jurassic Park" VHS and DVD covers were different and then the later reissues also had different art, including some Photoshop-looking garbage later on. The VHS tapes and DVD art for Disney films were often distinct. "Godzilla" films -- in 1998, Simitar did original art, then 2002 Classic Media and the 2004 Sony DVD releases of various "Godzilla" films separately used entirely new and distinct Photoshop work, and poster art was only changed back to later once the original Japanese edits entered circulation.

I've also seen some TV shows change their streaming art annually as a way to 'signal' to people there are new episodes available, in some cases using posters tied to a specific season or art created only for the purpose. Back to movies, "Harry Potter" has had those numbered poster art versions on streaming for years and years, but not sure that art was ever used for home video.

It feels a little easier to count the movies, like Raimi "Spider-Man" and the Paramount era "Friday the 13th" films, that actually DID stick with their poster iconography.

Look man, the idea of making all the Spider-Man posters consistent is very cool, but why the fuck they did the shittiest job possible, like damn, those posters are completely awful

1

u/polp54 Aug 19 '26

We need to go back to the classics

1

u/spyD164 Aug 20 '26

god the sam raimi posters looked so fantastic

1

u/swat1611 Aug 20 '26

Check out the spider-man brand new day posters, some of them are incredible.

The second one is just some fan-made bullshit.

u/Rule_Ct_5293 Aug 18 '26 edited Aug 18 '26

it's an official released by sony (or marvel)

0

u/GwyddnoGaranhir Aug 18 '26

Care to share proof? What would be the occasion to release such garbage?

10

u/Busy-Effect2026 Aug 18 '26

They all got this treatment. The posters changed in the Fandango app (and iTunes, etc., I assume) in the last few months.

2

u/GwyddnoGaranhir Aug 18 '26

Well I'll be damned. But hey, even though it's awful, at least it's not AI. I can kiiiinda see what they were going for.

2

u/NotDeletedMoto Aug 18 '26

I feel like you’re the one who should’ve googled something before commenting.

2

u/GwyddnoGaranhir Aug 18 '26

You're right, I should have. I just couldn't believe something like this would be an official release.

1

u/Legitimate_Main8244 Aug 18 '26

Consistency is key

You guys are getting mad about this now? The Raimi Spider-man movies have been getting awful box art for years at this point. At least someone sat at a computer to make that garbage, they did this box set on their phone.

It makes sense if you let me explain:

The first poster was for its theatrical release over 25yrs ago. Tons of money was spent on marketing and there were 2 movies before so everyone knew what “Spiderman 3” was and who was in it. So you could make the movie poster show none of the stars and have it be more themed. That poster was perfect for that moment in time.

Now it’s decades later. There’s been two different Spiderman runs of movies after that original one.

No one young who isn’t a Spiderman fan will have any idea who starred in the original Spiderman movies. They might even confuse Spiderman 3 with the current movies. So the studio decided to make it clear who was in those movies, so if someone rents or buys it online, they know what they are getting.

Edit: To add even more, it also helps the people who see Spiderman No Way Home. If they decide after “hey I wanna see the Spiderman movies with that old actor”, they can easily find him on the poster.

You just have to understand that you’re either a bigger Spiderman fan or you’re old .. old enough to see the original run of the movies and not the target for these posters.

Movie posters post-MCU are so awful. Don't just show me the actor's faces, give me an idea of what the movie is going to be about

2

u/CommanderFuzzy Aug 18 '26

I call it the face triangle. Or face Xmas tree because they look like disembodied baubles hanging on an Xmas tree shape.

I miss the posters from decades past

0

u/EmilePleaseStop Aug 19 '26

‘Post-MCU’. I have bad news for you about movie posters going back to the 1930s. I understand that this may be hard for you to understand, but almost nothing that sucks about Hollywood was invented or popularized by Marvel.

1

u/Orion-the-mediocre Aug 19 '26

I mean, you can’t really deny that we’ve had more of those posters post-mcu. I don’t mean putting a couple actors in the poster, I mean making a poster with literally nothing besides faces. Though star wars did it first, I implore you to look at the marvel movie poster lineup and tell me that they haven’t been at the very least contributing to the issue

-1

u/Key_Web_9046 Aug 18 '26

Marvel's been doing this for a while. I absolutely hate it.

0

u/Twooshort Aug 18 '26

Can we see an example of an actual poster was ever used?

0

u/kingrawer Aug 18 '26

When they do these dumbass slop posters, I just have to wonder what kinda guy they're imagining who looks at the first and goes "pass, looks boring" and then at the second "hoOOOOOOoly shit".

0

u/Yuckpuddle60 Aug 18 '26

No it doesn't. In fact it's like the last thing that needs to be scrutinized in the entirety of human existence. It's a movie poster for a 25 year old movie.

u/Broofmybite Aug 18 '26

Sony offices need to be bombed for this
