How do we actually fight back against the massive data center expansion in Colorado? We need to start organizing.
I want to start a serious discussion because I feel like this is becoming a massive problem, and we're not doing nearly enough to address it.
I'm in the Nunn/Windsor area, where a data center project has been moving forward, and it has me thinking about the bigger picture. These massive facilities are popping up all over the country, including in places already dealing with water concerns and growing demands on the power grid.
What really bothers me is the double standard. Regular people are told to conserve water, follow watering restrictions, and do their part, while massive corporations are building facilities that can demand enormous amounts of water and electricity. Meanwhile, we're expected to trust that the benefits outweigh the costs, even when the long-term impact on our communities isn't always clear.
I'm not against technology, and I understand that data centers serve a purpose. But I think we have every right to question how many are actually necessary, how quickly they're being built, who benefits financially, and who ends up paying the price through our water resources, utility bills, and the environmental impact.
And there's another issue. How much of a say do the people who actually live here get? A project can move forward even when residents have serious concerns. We can attend meetings, submit comments, and contact elected officials, but it often feels like the decisions have already been made and we're just being given an opportunity to voice our objections.
So here's what I really want to discuss: What can we actually DO about this?
I'm not interested in just complaining about it online and then moving on with our lives. I'd like to see people come together and figure out what actions could make a real difference.
- Are there local groups already organizing against data center expansion in Colorado?
- What legal, political, or community actions have actually worked in other places?
- How can residents push for enforceable limits on water use, electricity consumption, and future expansion?
- Can we push for stronger local or state regulations before even more projects get approved?
- How do we organize people across different communities so we're not all fighting these battles separately?
- What can ordinary people do when showing up to public meetings and contacting politicians doesn't seem to be enough?
I'm especially interested in hearing from people who have researched these projects, attended local hearings, worked on environmental issues, or been involved in successful community opposition elsewhere.
I know people have different opinions on this, and I'm open to a genuine discussion. But I don't think we should just accept whatever corporations decide to build in our backyards without asking hard questions and demanding accountability.
Our water, our power infrastructure, our environment, and our communities matter. We should have a meaningful say in what happens to them.
If you're concerned about this too, let's talk about what we can realistically do together. I'd much rather see us sharing information, connecting with people, and building a plan of action than watching these projects continue to expand while we argue amongst ourselves.

Seeking assistance for an individual fleeing religious cult
I’m hoping that there is a group or individual in the Greeley/Loveland/Fort Collins area that can help me find a temporary landing place for a young person (and their dog and two cats). They’re coming from the PNW and have a job in FC lined up, and a roommate situation imminent. They do not drive. Someone suggested there’s an organization that can help with getting folks away from religious entrapment situations, but I can’t find it. I am unfortunately going to be out of town when their plane arrives, so cannot help with transport or housing. Is anyone aware of such sanctuary and support?

Flag Football in FoCo!
Looking to get some flag football games going, like on Sunday mornings for example. All we'd need is 10 people for a good 5v5, at the minimum. I have some equipment from when I used to run a league. Let's get out there and have some fun!
