General Nigerian "luxury"

I watched the American critic criticize the so called Nigerian luxury and I laughed so hard the moment the video started šŸ˜‚. There's so many things working with that home to the point the host had to defend the developer. The lack of privacy, finishing, and functionality in the home is absurd. Just imagine buying a house like this just for you neighbors to see you using the restroom. That's really embarrassing. The state of Nigerian architecture is at a all time low. There's no personality in these homes and we've been missing that for awhile now. Everything looks the same. The homes or mansions that Nigerians copy don't fit with the climate and the environment we live in. It very important to build your home by the environment you're surrounded by but Nigerians just want a home based on aesthetics and how expensive it is to brag to their next door neighbor. Unbelievable!. Anyways if you're an architect, what are your thoughts? Do you think there's need for a change in architecture in Nigeria? Let me know please.

Pic You did Tinubu. Now do Obi.ā€ Fair enough. 500 parts. 662 sources. The Obi Files are here.

Some of you forgot about me. That's fair.

Some of you noticed the quiet and thought: where did that annoying guy with the 3,000-word posts and the budget PDFs go? Did they finally get him? Did he run out of documents? Was the whole thing a campaign after all?

None of the above.

On 1 October I said goodbye, and I meant it. But before that, in this same subreddit, I made you a promise with a date on it: the Obi Files, 15 October.

Today is 15 October.

Back in September, a lot of you asked one question, in a hundred different ways: "You did Tinubu. Will you really do Obi the same way, or is that just talk?"

Today you get the answer, and you don't have to take my word for it.

You also had fifteen days with the Tinubu Files. Fifteen days to tear them apart, check every page, redo every sum. Where we got something wrong, the correction is printed on the page, dated, with our original words still visible above it. Nothing is quietly deleted. That deal holds for this file too.

When we published on Tinubu, we were "opposition". When we published on Obi, we were "APC". I said then that we don't stand on any side. I hope by now that sentence needs no defending.

Same method. Same grades. Same refusal to say one word more than the paper says. Different man.

Here is one thing from the file that, as far as we can find, nobody has reported before.

FILE 01: "I LEFT WHEN I BECAME GOVERNOR"

Obi's account has always been simple: he stepped away from his family's businesses when he took office in March 2006.

His London company is Next International (UK) Ltd, company number 03199858. Its filings are public, free, and you can open every one of them yourself.

4 July 2006. Two months into his governorship, the company files its annual return. It lists one director: Peter Obi.

Read the annual return — Companies House

20 June 2007. Six days after the Supreme Court gives him back his office, the next return lists him again as "Director 1", and as the holder of 1 share. The other 999 belong to Next International (Nigeria).

Read the next annual return — Companies House

22 November 2007. The company files its 2006 accounts. Page 2 reads:

"Approved by the board on 22 November 2007 / And signed on their behalf by: / Peter Obi, Director"

Read the 2006 accounts — Companies House

He was the sitting Governor of Anambra State that day.

16 June 2008. Companies House finally receives the form ending his directorship, dated back to 16 May 2008.

Read the directorship termination — Companies House

WHY IT MATTERS

The Constitution does not stop a governor owning a business. It stops him running one. The Fifth Schedule, paragraph 2(b): a full-time public officer shall not "engage or participate in the management or running of any private business".

Approving a company's accounts is what directors do.

WHAT RUNS IN HIS FAVOUR

You get this part too, at the same length.

  • The November 2007 accounts were filed electronically by the company's agents. The "signature" is a typed name, not his handwriting.
  • In August 2006 the company appointed a full-time director, his brother Josephat, as Chief Operating Officer.
  • The handwritten signatures on the company's paper filings from 2006 onwards are not Obi's.
  • From 2010 the company was dormant.

So the document shows what the company told the UK registry. It does not prove that Obi personally saw or approved those accounts. Only the company's board records could settle that, and they have never been published.

No court, no tribunal and no Code of Conduct Bureau has made any finding on this. We asked Obi's side for comment repeatedly from September, and we have had no answer.

ALSO IN THE FILE

  • The full Pandora Papers trail, read from ICIJ's own database rather than from the headlines, including where the original reporting got it wrong.
  • A Nigerian company registered in 2021 in which the beneficial-ownership register lists Obi at 50%.
  • The ₦75 billion he says he left. Anambra's own 2014 budget book backs the size of that figure, and we say so plainly.
  • "Owing nobody", set against the Debt Management Office tables and the courts.
  • 94 of his own statistics, each tested against the dataset it came from. 45 hold up or come close. 28 don't.

500 parts. 63 supplements. 7 sections. Around 226,000 words. 662 sources.

Every finding numbered. Every source named, saved and fingerprinted, so that if a page disappears from the internet tomorrow, the record of it doesn't.

Obi supporters will find things in it they won't like. Obi critics will find things in it they won't like either, because the record supports him in places where his opponents have been loudest. That is not balance for the sake of balance. It is what happens when you follow the paper instead of the crowd.

So here's my last request, the same one as always.

Don't trust Dr Vero. Check him. Open the four filings above before you read a single word of ours. Then open the file, and do to it what you did to the Tinubu Files. Break it if you can. If you find an error, post it here. It will be corrected in public, on the page, under your eyes.

Two files down. One to go: Atiku, 30 October.

The annoying guy didn't disappear. He was reading.

Truth has a paper trail.

Politics APC, The ruling party seems determined to lose, and I honestly don’t understand the strategy

These past few weeks have been horrible for many Lagosians , and I’m genuinely beginning to wonder whether the ruling party actually wants to win the next election.

First, the power supply has been absolutely terrible, especially here on the Lagos Mainland. I live in an area with a large student population, in one of the local governments that voted against the ruling party in the last election. You would think this would be the perfect place for the government to make a concerted effort to win people over, but everywhere you turn, you see their posters, while the things that actually affect people’s lives seem to be getting worse.

The cost of housing has become ridiculous. Rents have skyrocketed, in some cases to several times what they used to be, and developers seem increasingly determined to squeeze every last naira out of people. Meanwhile, the government appears largely indifferent to the situation. Young people are struggling to afford accommodation, students are struggling to keep up with the cost of living, and ordinary Nigerians are being stretched thinner by the day.

Then there’s the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road project. Businesses have been demolished, livelihoods disrupted, and people have had to deal with the consequences of a project that has already generated so much controversy. Now, watching the project take another turn after all that disruption only adds to the frustration. What are people supposed to make of all this?

And yes, the government can point to student loan schemes and other interventions as evidence that it is doing something for young people. But what does assistance with tuition really mean when the cost of virtually everything else keeps rising? Students still have to eat, pay rent, buy transportation, and keep themselves alive. You cannot point to one intervention and expect people to ignore the broader economic reality they are living in.

What gets me is the apparent disconnect between political campaigning and people’s actual experiences. There are posters everywhere, but posters don’t provide electricity. They don’t make rent affordable. They don’t put food on the table, and they don’t restore the businesses that have been destroyed.

If anything, this should be the period when the ruling party is working hardest to win over people who didn’t vote for it last time. These are the months when you demonstrate that you understand people’s frustrations and are willing to do something meaningful about them. Instead, it feels as though the strategy is to rely on political machinery, money, and electoral calculations rather than genuinely earning people’s support.

Sometimes, it honestly feels like the ruling party believes it can simply buy its way through the next election, or rely on whatever advantages it has, rather than actually winning people over. I don’t know whether that’s truly the plan, but the way things are going makes you wonder.

How do you expect people to feel enthusiastic about voting for you when their everyday lives are becoming more difficult? Is there a political strategy behind all this that I’m not seeing, or has the ruling party become so comfortable with its position that it genuinely doesn’t understand how much goodwill it is burning through?

Because if your goal is to win an election, surely making people’s lives better is a more sensible strategy than plastering their neighbourhoods with posters while giving them more reasons to be frustrated. P.S: Seeing Tinubu’s face plastered everywhere is the worst eyesore. Can’t stand his ugly face nor his failed policies.

General Visa Appointment Frustrations

For Nigerians in Nigeria, how do you guys secure visas to travel please?

I have an ongoing master's that's online with a university in Barcelona, but there will be a week long face to face study on University premises in January 2027, and I have been trying for months now to secure a visa appointment with the Spanish consulate so I can join my class, but there is no appointment availability.

I decided to try securing a visa through France since its all Schengen visa areas so I can travel to Spain from France, still no availability.

I've been setting alarms so I wake up at 2am and look up availability, because I learnt dates are released around late night to early morning hours, still nothing.

Its so frustrating and upsetting, I don't know what to do.

I'm the only African in this program, I already feel some level of self consciousness, I can't join conversations where people are planning their travels and now I'm honestly ashamed to tell them I might not join them because I can't secure a visa appointment, to talk less of even getting the approval that will allow me travel.

I see Nigerians who live in Nigeria traveling to these countries when I go online, but I don't know anyone personally to ask how its being done. Do they possibly have dual citizenship or is there a method to securing this thing that I am not knowledgeable on?

This is my first attempt to pursue a visa, I have only travelled within West Africa up until this point.

Pic Kenyans need about $824 to get into the Dangote IPO through Nairobi. Nigerians need ₦5,250. Is the low ticket actually getting people in?

Post image
5 Upvotes

Disclosure: I write Harmattan, a newsletter on Nigerian capital markets. This is from this week's edition.

The minimum application for the Dangote Refinery offer in Nigeria is 10 shares at ₦525, so ₦5,250. That is about $3.94 at the CBN rate.

Kenya approved a route through depositary receipts listed in Nairobi. The minimum there is 2,000 receipts at 53.50 shillings, which is 107,000 shillings, roughly $824. That is about 209 times the Nigerian minimum.

So on price, the Nigerian door is wide open. But price is not the only barrier. You still need a broker or bank channel, your identity checks have to clear, and the payment has to go through before the list closes, now 27 October.

For anyone here who has applied, or tried to: what was the hardest part, and how long did it take?

Discussion Need advise after friend robbed and had loan pit in his name

I send my friend money to help him we have known each other many years. He got sick and made friends with a nurse to the point I helped pay for her brother’s surgery…… so maybe a week ago I won a contest so I sent a big amount of money to try helping him get his life in order. The nurse was taking the money to get things and then get a letter today she took her brother and mother to Abuja sold their property and took out a loan in his name for almost 860,000 Niara…… now the bank is going to go after him for the loan and he has bo way to pay what she took he barely even makes enough money to get food. We are very panicked on what to do. I literally just sent him like 200,000 niara too that he went to her thinking he was giving to her to put towards a car so he could do taxi service like her brother but in actuality she was stealing it as well :(

Reddit My Friend built a Nigerian fashion game and I need people to judge it 😭

He has been working on a little fashion game called Slay Naija and he finally put it live. This is me supporting.

The main mode is basically a fashion competition: you get a theme, have 90 seconds to style your character, then the judges score your look. If you score high enough, you move to the next round. If not, you’re sent home

He’s still improving it, so I’d genuinely love feedback from people here especially on whether the game is actually fun, the clothes, scoring, or anything that feels annoying/confusing.

And if you play, drop your score because I need to know who here actually has taste

Honestly, watching this foolishness play out has made me realize how much racism can hold back the critical thinking of a lot of people. Now I wonder, has anyone being in a situation where the answer was obvious, but others simply refused to acknowledge it due to racism?

Discussion Insanity of Data Spend (MTN)

So I recently just got back to Nigeria and live in Ibeju Lekki. Initially I had already set aside money that I’d realistically spend on data but what I was not prepared for was the bizarre rate at which it finishes.

Please spare me the ā€œyou forget say you dey Nigeriaā€ comments, as either way it’s insane that MTN is fucking Nigerians in the ass with no lube and there’s little alternatives. I’ve spent under $30 in the space of two weeks as I work in design and content but I don’t see how viable it is to keep dropping that amount in the time I have to spend here

I’m considering wifi as an alternative but I’ve been seeing that my area — Ibeju Lekki — is mostly wireless due to limited fibre rollout. Any one have suggestions or thoughts?

I’ve also seen that MTN FibreX may be good but not sure if I’m going to still be scarred lol

General 30 year old Nigerian roommate being unreasonable (I just turned 19)

• Upvotes

Im a current sophomore living with a Nigerian roommate, its a double bed room with a shared bathroom. Today I came back at around 12:30 midnight and I saw him eating in the room in which the whole room smelled like crazy, he was also watching tiktok or reels with a pretty high volume and the lights on his side was hella bright it even shined over to my side a little. So my unit has 1 shared room and 3 other singles and one of the single room is not taken and the door was unlocked, mind you this is the middle of October so the chances of any student leasing this room is close to none. I grabbed my pillow and blanket to the room and a few minutes later I hear him come out being all ANGRY that I left the room and I’m not supposed to sleep there blah blah. Ok I am actually not allowed to stay there (on paper) because I leased a different room, but come on why did he get all mad about it like isn’t it better for him because he doesn’t have to share, one less the better. Im planning to change units because im fucking scared of this guy, bros 30 literally unc status and gets mad for things that actually benefits him and also doesn’t affect him in any way. I don’t interact with a lot of Nigerians but my first impression of one is down the drain.
