Political News House control all but gone, top Republicans privately concede

I have been assuming the senate will be 50-50 and the dems will get a 15 to 20 seat lead in the house since May. Once they all completely rolled over for Donald they were reliant on him being successful to be successful themselves. They tied their cart to a crazed ox and then shot the teamster and threw his body in a ditch and hoped for the best, didn't work out too well and none of them have anything to run on besides culture war BS.

I'm assuming 51-49. But then Fetterman makes its 50/50 and a Vance tie break, enough to slow down judge appointments, and stop another huge gift to the wealthy like the obb bill was

u/g1rlchild 4h ago
I'm really hoping it's 52-48, which is well within the realm of possibility. A full blue tsunami where we carry Kansas (which is polling really close) is 54-46.

u/Stryke4ce 7h ago
He doesn’t need to be successful. He knows it’s over in two years and he won’t be around to see all of the destruction. He would not want anyone else to come in and get any recognition.

u/MChaney3563 19h ago
Republicans and "concede" is not a thing because we know they will contest every single damn race. The upcoming midterms is a test of how well they can do this, then again during the elections, but mainly how they can secure Trump from being removed from power/ensuring a Dem can never become president again.
18
u/Pockydo 19h ago
I think the best outcome for reps (and one of the worst for america) is Dems get house and reps retain a small majority in Senate
This lets them blame the Dems running the house for all their problematic stuff especially the BBB which is set to hurt soon. So in 28 they can go "see dems bad vote for us again"
5
u/Coyoteishere 18h ago edited 18h ago
The federal government also just made RIFs easier avoiding all the red tape normally required. Besides veto power and relentless EOs, the only thing they will have left is control of the departments. I am expecting them to absolutely destroy the rest to the point the average American feels the pain from the lack of federal services, IRS, CDC, SSA, USDA, etc. They will want Americans to see how bad it gets so, like you said, they can point at dems and say “look how much worse it is now!” This also serves P2025 goal of privatizing the gov. Couple that with a financial collapse and these idiots will believe it’s the dems again. Things are going to get much worse before they get better, if they ever do for America again.
5
u/OriginalLie9310 18h ago
I doubt they’ll be able to pin things on the Dems that easily.
Obviously the cultists will continue to support them regardless, but the economy has been in major decline since Trump’s inauguration, measles outbreaks and response being botched by the fda, immense numbers of food recalls due to deregulation, and this isn’t even the blatant corruption and unlawful wars Trump is waging.
Yes the cultists will still support their leader, but Trump has destroyed the Republican Party. And he also doesn’t really care as long as things work out the way he wants. When he’s gone it’s all gonna collapse unless they’ve rewritten the constitution by then.
4
u/Urabraska- 18h ago
The timing of the cuts is specifically put in because they knew from the get go all this would be unpopular enough that there was a high chance they would lose the midterms.
→ More replies (1)2
u/GearSalty2775 18h ago
Watch the economy crash sometime shortly after the midterms and democrats take all of the blame for it. Just watch.
6
u/Ear_Enthusiast 18h ago
Yep, and they'll refuse to confirm anything that they deem "corrupt" on their terms. There will be protests in the streets, and Trump will declare martial law. I 99.9% think that's what is going to happen. I think there is the tiniest chance that the house abandons Trump and his coup, so they can finally be done with him. At this point I think they're committed to the coup. They've come this far, and they're all in.

From POLITICO:
Some top congressional Republicans have privately concluded that it is likely impossible for them to keep control of the House of Representatives in the midterm elections, and they are now focused on limiting the scale of the defeat and salvaging the party's Senate majority.
Five senior Republican lawmakers, all granted anonymity to speak candidly about their party's dire position, told POLITICO the House had all but slipped away.
One senior House Republican said the GOP's goal at this point was to "save as many Republican seats as we can." The president, this person said, was not helping.

u/honeybabysweetiedoll 18h ago
You should look up how a new Congress is seated, because what you’re saying can’t happen. You’re just making stuff up and getting angry about it, which is delusional.
15
u/Glittering-Prize-241 17h ago
The story of the last ten years is the story of stuff that “can’t happen” actually happening.
21
u/UnionHelpful8135 18h ago
For real. There is real doomerism to prep for but “seating” the 2027 congress, nor anything to do with Mike Johnson is one of them.
6
u/Anarye 15h ago
Shit man, its what they did to our Airzona representative for 7 weeks.
4
u/mdb1023 14h ago
Important context being left out: that was in the middle of a term. Mike Johnson has no power over the new congress unless the GOP wins control of the house by some miracle.
→ More replies (1)4
u/JakeConhale 14h ago
Can only do that obstruction with a Speaker of the House, who doesn't exist until after the incoming Congress is sworn in at their first assembly.

u/ineugene 15h ago
True but this iteration was already seated after election the whole thing is tossed and restarted as a new congress.
2
u/Mr31edudtibboh 13h ago
Don't try and fight the doomerism. Reddit is convinced that Trump is going to somehow be obeyed by the military to the point of bombing American cities, and this too. The same hivemind that was confident in Harris winning 2 years ago.
6
u/BeligerentBard 17h ago
The number of things that people have said "can't happen" with this administration is entirely too high to feel comfortable about this.
7
u/addiktion 17h ago edited 17h ago
I've read similar but we should expect the worst from this administration. This has never been attempted before but we just don't know where MAGA is going to attempt to stress cracks in the process.
If they knowingly are getting rich off of the corruption and they know they are committing crimes I don't think its unreasonable to assume they will do literally anything to delay, deflect, distract, and destroy our democracy to stay in power.
So I think we need to all be prepared for the worst case scenarios of attempts to undermine our election systems. Whether or not it happens is on the people to decide if they will accept this or not because it seems inevitable with Trump at the helm.
6
u/AnewTest 17h ago
Yeah, sure. The Republican Trump cult never has held someone’s swearing in back so there’d be one less Democrat, right?
Oh wait, they did. https://thehill.com/homenews/house/5529055-republicans-grijalva-swearing-in-house/amp/

I mean what's stopping them from just denying them access and having ICE arrest them for some fake charge?
Legitimately, what is stopping them from rejecting the election and not letting them have access to the building?
2
u/VanguardAvenger 14h ago
Executive branch law enforcement have no actual authority on the capital grounds.
And the capital has not 1, not 2, but 3 different law enforcement agencies thay do not anwser to the Executive branch.
And in fact, 2 of those 3 groups are explicitly empowered to bring elected representatives to the floor of congress if they are anywhere in the limits of DC.
And unlike the President, Congress does actually have immunity from arrests in the Consistution if they are executing their offical duties
So I suspect any ICE agent who attempted to detain a Congressman en route to the floor gets arrested themselves.

I don’t remember where it is, but there is a clause in the constitution that you can not stop them from traveling to congress.

Sure, they have shown the utmost respect for the Constitution up to this point… /s

u/ChiSaint 15h ago
I mean, what’s stopping them from looking up everyone who made a political donation to the Dems this cycle, rounding them up and imprisoning / executing them?
What you are talking about is a full scale tearing down of the American constitutional system of government. Could they try it? I guess. But that is many steps further than what has been done to date (even including all the shit after the 2020 election).

That would be a coup. Very serious indeed. I hope any legislators or officials contemplating this fully comprehend this.
3
u/DogsOnMainstreetHowl 17h ago
I agree that this general scenario is likely. But there is big risk. Of Republicans retain the Senate they might accept the results and save official totalitarian power grab for the next presidential election in 2028.
Dems can annoy Trump with the House, but they can’t convict him of anything or stop him from him rolling out a coup in two more years.
3
u/abagofsnacks 17h ago
Didn't a few dems win special elections and Johnson dragged out swearing them in for several months?

There will not be a Speaker Johnson. There is no Speaker until the newly sworn-in members of Congress elect one. The previous Speaker has absolutely nothing to do with swearing in the Congress.

5
u/abriefmomentofsanity 11h ago
Yeah I'm a bit tired of "can't happen" being used as some kind of ironclad logic. How many times do we need to see that the system is breaking down and what we thought were the rules clearly aren't anymore before it sticks. Do you have ANY amount of insurance to back of that statement beyond some limp-wristed "but that's illegal" whimpering?

I'd more afraid that the Dems win, take their positions, and then everything they pass just isn't followed up on by any executive branch Rs because who's gonna enforce anything? What if the Rs just say no? Impeach and convict? Alright, who's gonna remove them if they don't follow the listed rules and do as they say? What is the military gonna do when leadership are sworn sycophants and follow Trump instead of what was ordered by Congress and law? I hope it doesn't get to that, but the Constitution has already been shown to be a suggestion in all scenarios with the current administration.

Plus, Courts could very well invoke the political question doctrine.
That being said this won't happen. Republicans will lose control of the House and go something like 49D-51R in the Senate. It'll be two years of gridlock and extra performative bullshit
→ More replies (1)1
u/mdb1023 15h ago
Jesus Christ, some of you really need to take a civics class.
That is not how it works
The outgoing congress has absolutely zero say over an incoming congress. You're getting the process for swearing in a new congress mixed up with the certification of the votes in a presidential election.
The ongoing Speaker of the House does not have anything to do with swearing in new members. The very first thing that happens is the new congress votes on a new Speaker, and then the new members are sworn in. Neither Mike Johnson nor a "Maga House clerk" have the power or ability to refuse to seat new members.
If an issue were to arise that required intervention from the courts, this isn't something that would be delayed- it would be addressed immediately. Look at the timeliness of events for Bush v Gore if you don't believe me.
And consider this: if it was as simple as you're suggesting it is for politicians to ignore the will of the people, don't you think we would have lost our republic by now?

u/dzogchenism 15h ago
The suits are not uncharted territory. The scenario you’ve described has happened before and there’s already case law.
1
u/VanguardAvenger 14h ago
Speaker Johnson
Who is this "Speaker Johnson" of whom you speak?
Like any federal elected official, the Speaker is automatically stripped of power at the end of their term
As of noon on Jan 3, there is no Speaker of the House until the new house elects one.
So there's no Speaker Johnson, Jackson, Jeffries, Smith, Black, Etc.
a new MAGA House clerk
So funny thing about this: While the Speaker does have the authority to fire the Clerk, they explicitly do not have the power to replace them if they fire them.
If theres a vacancy the power of the Clerks office goes to the Sergeant at Arms office.
So not really seeing how the MAGA guy gets in.
This by the way is why Mike Johnson has publicly stated his considering resigning from congress if Republicans lose.
Hes knows there's nothing he can do.
1
u/AffordablePlant 14h ago
Congratulations you’re literally doing the bidding of republicans. When you talk about them like they’ve already won and there’s no reason to vote because what good would that do when they’ll just do whatever they want anyways, you give them that power.
1
u/LordCornwalis 14h ago
Yeah, that's not at all how our government works. The people currently in? Their terms are over. They get no say in whether the new Congress is seated or not.
1
1
u/Succulent_Rain 14h ago
Johnson only toes the line because of Trump. The fact that he has said in an interview that he doesn’t know what he’ll do if he loses speaker of the house and that maybe he would go open a lawn business is basically him telegraphing that he is sick and tired of GOP politics and sick and tired of Trump.

To think the party that brought us January 6 would voluntarily give up power because of something as simple as election results is underestimating MAGA.

People need to start documenting these sentiments and the expectation of poor results for Republicans in the lead up to the midterms.
Because I PROMISE you - as soon as the results start coming in every Republican is going to jump on-board with their unified propaganda that the results are an ANOMALY indicative of RIGGING and FRAUD. They will try to retcon these past few months to brain-break their base into thinking the GOP had some great momentum and support that "suddenly" vanished when the midterm results start coming in.
