I’m actually not sure if I’m more tired of the Dodgers themselves or the ridiculous narrative that they’ve achieved some kind of historically unprecedented dominance to the point it’s ruining the game.
Either way, will be thrilled to see both go down in flames this series

The Dodgers genuinely don't have shit on the late 90's-early 2000's Yankees as much as I hate those teams. The National League in the 2020s has been incredibly weak in comparison.

Yes this is exactly what I mean! Like the dynasty Yankees are very much still in living memory but people are acting completely brain broken by the Dodgers

The $325m World Series MVP, a pitcher on the precipice of a megadeal, and the presumptive 2026 NL Cy Young combined to go for just 12 IP in their first NLCS starts.
Even a "proven ace" can't guarantee 6 IP. Need to have confidence in your pen.

Guardians were declared dead going down 2-0 in the ALDS. Now they stole game 1 in the CS from the Rays. Never been impressed with the Guards in the past but props to them would be a really fun WS surprise

Can't believe I'm reading comments from Mets fans saying we should get rid of Lindor.
Thank God the FO doesn't act based on Reddit comments
6
u/myassholealt F8 2d ago
It's every damn year since his first year. And the calls will get louder once the off season officially starts. One of the many things that make the sub not as fun during the off season for me.
10
u/traded99 2d ago
It’s crazy. Pointing out that Lindor probably wont be the player he was in the upcoming years is fair. That happens with age. But he happens to be on a hall of fame track, and one of the best short stops of all time. There isn’t a good replacement for Lindor out there. I hope he finishes his career as a met, gets 12 retired, and wears a Mets hat in cooperstown.
8
u/Prestigious_Money447 New York Mets 2d ago
that’s why the Mets should be trying to get him a World Series to lock up his HOF case before he becomes an aging bit player at the end of his contract.
4
u/traded99 2d ago
Agree. We got Soto and Lindor on the same team at the same time during their core. Not going all out to make sure the pitching is the best it can be, and they have enough support in the lineup is fireable. Can’t kick the can down the road, might not have 2 players on the same team at the same time ever again.
4
u/NuanceManExe 2d ago
Running out of time unfortunately. The Mets never approached it that way. They could’ve. But they didn’t. Wanted to “build the farm instead” while paying first round draft pick penalties for 4 years consecutively.

Totally agree. Signing Polanco and neglecting the pitching staff was a masterstroke. Surprised it didn’t work out. 😒

Why did Stearns tell Peralta to regress and Holmes to break his leg? Is he stupid?

Signing Polanco to replace Alonso still needs to be studied for its stupidity.
2
→ More replies (1)5
u/banana455 2d ago
I don't think going out and trading for Peralta was neglectful. It just didn't work.
The neglect was in the 2024-25 offseason when they signed Manaea, Holmes, Canning and Montas instead of going out and trying to get a real top of the rotation starter. Dumpster diving when they had Soto, Lindor and Alonso in their prime - shit is sickening to look back on.
8
u/Doc-Spock 2d ago
Sadly, there are a lot of incredibly stupid people in this world. Every MLB team has them in their respective fanbases, including the Mets.
3
u/Prestigious_Money447 New York Mets 2d ago edited 2d ago
I see a lot of comments on this subreddit about how the Mets are doing a rebuild and winning is not a priority for next year (assume there is a next year etc). if that’s the case then the absolute 100% right move is to get rid of Lindor, and to get rid of Soto too. there’s no point in having 2 prime/near prime players on the roster if you aren’t trying to win. Just get rid of them for prospects, shed salary, get under whatever theoretical CBT or salary cap exists, and see what happens. it’s also not fair to those two guys who were brought in here to help the team win a World Series, not tank.
now, I absolutely do not think this, but this is the logical conclusion to what I am seeing from Mets fans at the moment.
6
u/0rangePolarBear Jacob deGrom 2d ago
I can see the logic in moving on from Lindor, who may have began his post prime years now, but Soto is only turning 28 later this month. He is only 3 years older than Nolan McLean.
With that said, preference is to keep them both.
→ More replies (1)3
u/Prestigious_Money447 New York Mets 2d ago
Soto costs $56M a year and in his prime. It’s much easier to get under whatever cap or threshold exists without him and you are a worse ball club which helps with drafting. Teams that are rebuilding don’t sign free agents in their prime. That’s the point. and also a rebuild is not what you sold to the guy.
I don’t think the Mets should be rebuilding and i think they should be trying to win. But if they’re not it simply makes no sense to keep those guys.
3
u/0rangePolarBear Jacob deGrom 2d ago
I don’t view them going through a total rebuild right now. I see them kind of like the 05 Mets going into 2027. They have their young studs established in the league now (Benge, McLean, Ewing, Scott, etc.) and paired with the star players (Soto, Lindor, Bichette, etc.). I believe the team can be competitive in 2027 based on the current roster.
Now I think your point is if the Mets were committing to a full rebuild, it would logically make sense to trade both.
3
u/Prestigious_Money447 New York Mets 2d ago
i totally agree with your point about their competitive standing next year. if Stearns picked better players in free agency they would have been competitive this year. but when I read “winning isn’t a priority next year” then the obvious conclusion is to let go of these high priced vets.
2
u/0rangePolarBear Jacob deGrom 2d ago
Oh man, I may have missed a quote. Did David Stearns say “winning isn’t a priority next year” ?
3
u/Prestigious_Money447 New York Mets 2d ago
no, I’m basing this on opinions I have been reading in Mets forums. I don’t think Stearns has ever said anything to that effect, in any year.
4
u/0rangePolarBear Jacob deGrom 2d ago
Yeah, there are a lot of bad opinions in these Mets forums haha.

u/lilleff512 Forever my Captain 2d ago
Getting rid of Lindor could make sense given the right deal, but there's no way it makes sense to get rid of Soto unless we are getting another perennial MVP candidate in his 20s. To the extent that there is a "rebuild" going on, it is with the purpose of realigning the roster around Juan Soto's timeline (i.e. the next 5+ years rather than just the short-term future). Juan Soto is closer in age to Carson Benge than he is to Francisco Lindor.
4
u/Setec-Astronomer 2d ago
I don't they they should get rid of him, but I'm also willing to see what a return may look like.
I think your take is as unreasonable as the strawman you're using to make it.
2
u/futhatsy Don't Call My Name 2d ago
Francisco Lindor is not going to get traded because he has an NTC and very few other teams would want that contract right now. But if this front office could get out of that deal right now without taking on an equally shitty deal, they absolutely would.

That was an old school manufactured run.
3
u/SR626 2d ago
Skubal is the same age as Scherzer was when he signed with the Nats, and a year older than Cole was when he signed with the Yankees.
To sign him would require an uncomfortable amount of dollars and term, but no-doubt, proven aces of his caliber actually hitting the market is a rarity. Maybe once or twice a decade. If you want to wait a few years for Skenes you can try, but you also never know if he’ll get traded elsewhere and fall in love with his next destination. And if you miss him, well you’re gonna be waiting a long time later.
Do I believe the Mets will actually sign him? I do not. I believe pretty strongly every offer is going straight back to LA for the chance to match and if there’s any time pressure to sign before the CBA expires to lock in grandfathered terms that only tips the scales heavier in LA’s favor.
An offseason requires many plans, and you have to accept he is probably NOT a Met in 2027. But that doesn’t mean you just pass altogether. You have to try to pounce when an opportunity is there, even if threatening to back up the truck only means more the Dodgers have to pay.
→ More replies (1)2
u/Setec-Astronomer 2d ago
I wouldn't complain if the Mets got Skubal. Like at all.
But the Mets need depth. They have "depth" as in shitty bottom of the order options. But not actual depth. That allows McLean and Scott to slot down to less pressure spots in the rotation.
I would go get two reliable veteran arms. (Just for the sake of explanation, like Holmes and Gausman).
Holmes, McLean, Gausman, Scott allows the Mets to keep developing the young guys to take on the back end.
Skubal alone doesn't.
Of course, if the Mets can get Skubal and Gausman I'll be happy. :-D
2
u/muziklover91 2d ago
Holmes is a given. Would like a lefty to complement him. Not sold on any of the other young outfielders I’ve seen so I’d also try n get Taylor back on a 2 year deal. Soto needs to buy a first baseman’s glove.

He's not as smart as he thinks he is. And full transparency neither am I but atleast I have the balls to admit it unlike 60-70% of sports fandom if not more. Even if the Brewers don't win I've watched enough of them this season that they are absolutley the real deal.

If Milwaukee manages to win it all, will that be a defense or an indictment of Stearns?
7
u/Caledor152 Starling Marte 2d ago
And if they don't win it all will it also be an indictment on Stearns? Doesn't matter someone will always twist it to whatever they want it to say

I think for many it's a preconceived notion.
Stearns' defenders will point to it and say "see!!"
Stearns' detractors will point to it and say "see!!"
I think it'll be in part both really.

u/lilleff512 Forever my Captain 2d ago
Everyone will just use it to reaffirm their own priors.
The pro-Stearns crowd will say that the Brewers won because of the organizational infrastructure he built and the players he acquired/developed.
The anti-Stearns crowd will say that Stearns had little to nothing to do with their success and that Matt Arnold has been the person responsible for Milwaukee's success all along.
→ More replies (2)4
u/metsfan5557 New York Mets 2d ago
The pro-stearns folks argument you listed here is probably correct AND the anti-stearns folks should be satisfied to hear that part of the reason he hasn't been successful here is because many of the FO staff from before his time are still around.
3
u/pusgnihtekami NY Bootlickers 2d ago
the anti-Stearns crowd might say that the pro-stearns argument hinges on Stearns hiring people like Matt Arnold lol
→ More replies (1)3
u/myassholealt F8 2d ago
Any serious discussion would, I think, need a breakdown of how many guys on the roster throughout the post season were players he brought in. How many of the coaches were his hires?
I don't like many things Stearns has done here, but I also do like quite a few too, but ultimately we can't really properly grade his Mets tenure until his contract is up. 5 years is enough time to get in new hires with a couple years of work in, draftees that either graduated to the majors or are showing very good results in the minors, and successful trades with assets he accrued in our system.
If you give him a blank checkbook and say build me a winning team, so far results suggest he can't. If you give him full control and say use all your tools and knowledge and build me a winning team, we still need more time to see how that plays out for us. But it has potential.
2
u/Setec-Astronomer 2d ago edited 2d ago
I think one of the biggest difference between the first three years of Stearns in Milwaukee and the first three years of Stearns in NY is that in Milwaukee he inherited a bunch of veterans with trade value.
He was able to create a preliminary base of prospects rather quickly.
He then also didn't lose multiple first round picks (or major drops in the order) because of tax penalties.
This is key, because it allowed the Brewers (him and others like Arnold) to create the system that in theory has helped them with continued success.
With the Mets he wasn't initially able to do that. Eventually last offseason he sent some veterans but their value was lower or their salaries limited the return.
Part of the difference also is that in NY you can't do a full rebuild. And signing guys like Soto are necessary to keep revenue (fannies in the seats) flow going.
In theory he has helped create a new system here though.
I do think the haul this past deadline and recent draft picks will create a solid "first" base like Stearns was able to do in Milwaukee his first year.
His first three seasons here are mired with too many mistakes. And not enough dry powder to duplicate Milwaukee's first three seasons.
I think unfortunately one has to look at 2026 as Year One if we're comparing to his tenure in Milwaukee.
But agreed. There is definitely potential there.

u/traded99 2d ago
Stearns stepped down as the brewers POBO after the 2022 season. We’re 4 offseason removed from that, heading into the 5th. Sure he can get some credit but not all of it.
→ More replies (4)4
u/bowlofcantaloupe Francisco Alvarez 2d ago
Definitely a defense of his ability to build up a farm system and player development infrastructure. But he's already good at that with the Mets.
The issue is his FA decisions.
2
u/muziklover91 2d ago
He’s learned about certain aspects of FA. Like this years star reliever could be next years eh. I also think as he finally admitted it’s tough to adjust here regardless of who it is. Star or any player.
2
u/jimihenderson 2d ago
The truth is it doesn't matter. He obviously succeeded in Milwaukee. Milwaukee is also fine without him. What happened in Milwaukee has zero relevance to us as Mets fans. He has to prove he can do it again and do it here
4
u/Original-Paint2239 2d ago
It would be a great triumph of Stearns, he built the core. He got Yelich, Turang, got McGill for nothing, drafted and developed Miz etc.
Basically the entire team was created from scraps and built into all stars for the brewers.
2
u/Setec-Astronomer 2d ago
Basically the entire team was created from scraps
I agreed with you till that line.
The reality is Stearns inherited a team with a bunch of veterans with trade value.
He fire-saled and got a bunch of young guys that started the base the Brewers built on.
Still agree with you overall. But it definitely wasn't scraps.
2
2
u/banana455 2d ago
I don't think it says much about Stearns one way or another. He left Milwaukee 4 years ago and their current POBO, Matt Arnold, was assistant GM under Stearns the entire time during his Brewers tenure.
Stearns did some good stuff there, but it's pretty clear now that it wasn't a miraculous boy wonder job seeing how successful Arnold has been.

Whenever I hear Joe Davis what I'm hearing is someone with a painfully put on voice trying to sound decades older than he is. It's that faux wisdom and corporate professionalism that a network like FOX loves but it's so fake. We're lucky to have Gary Cohen who naturally commands gravitas through his voice but actually has a personality and doesn't just exist to serve whatever the network wants. So many people prop up Joe Davis and I've always thought of him as imposter Joe Buck.

David Stearns was criticized for trading for Christian Yelich and giving him a high price tag.
The criticism wasn't wrong in that Yelich has disappointed.
But he was also very right in that the prospects he gave up (like Brinson) never were as good as their prospect ranking. Hoarding would have been a huge mistake.
And Yelich has become the veteran leader, the Captain, of this very young team.
Stearns deserves credit for NOT listening to y'all who would have been like "Brinson is the number 2 prospect on Baseball Prospectus, you can't trade him!" and "OMG that much money for Yelich?!". You were the types who were criticizing him. He proved you wrong.

Seeing so many dodgers fans unhappy with their lineup not coming through and realizing they literally wouldn't be baseball fans of a normal team if that's where they happened to grow up. If Freeman, Ohtani, Betts, Tucker arent enough for you then you'll never be happy
