[Request] Tv shows that you swore you’d never watch but when you finally caved, it was the most amazing thing

Andor. Other half knows I'm not into Star Wars but he put it on anyway because he's a shit. Loved it.
8
u/Snowy3121 16d ago
One of the best shows this year. You should watch Rogue One because Andor is the direct prequel to that movie. It also finalises the story of Andor. Although it doesn't have the amazing soundtrack of Andor.

Only good things about Disney SW are Rogue One and Andor. Happily, they're set before the new trilogy so you can just skip those.

Same! I remember seeing the ads for is and completely blowing it off as "looks kind of dumb." Only when my wife started watching it on Netflix did I pay attention.
Possibly the most satisfying ending to a network show ever.

So few shows stick the landing at all. Its amazing when one does. And even better when it was as good as The Good Place managed.
I may be musremembering, its been a few years since I watched last. But they managed to hold onto the feeling, at least that they had a story to tell, and told it, and.peaced out insteadmof dragging the show on

u/ChickieN0B_2050 15d ago
The other day I read a lonnnng series of posts in the TGP sub full of nothing but people’s favorite quotes. It’s been some years since I watched the show but it was a joy how quickly all the quotes came back to me.
JASON, TALKING ABOUT HIS MOTHER (S4E8):
“I lost her to the big C. That’s what we called the crocodile that lived by my house. I’m just playing. It was cancer.”

How long does it take to get into it. I’ve watched a few episodes and it seemed kind of cheesy to me. Does it get better?
32
u/mpbh 16d ago
The cheesiness is part of the charm. If you don't like it after the season 1 finale then it's probably not for you, but I'd at least give it a go through the first season. It's pretty universally loved for a reason.

u/RedOctobyr 16d ago
If you're willing, I'd suggest watching to the end of season 1, before deciding whether to continue. Do not do any reading about the show, important spoilers abound. It is one of my favorites.
21
u/Fearless-Fart 16d ago
I just checked it, Looks like I left off mid episode six. So maybe I’ll give it a go through the end of the season and then decide.
29
u/Darkest_97 16d ago
It's cheesy but there's a reason for it. Keep going I'd say. One of the best endings of all television I think too

u/onorsworthy 16d ago
The character development in that show is amazing.
30
u/glitterally_awake 15d ago
First time I tried to watch it I was like oh no pooor rich people I don’t wanna watch this.
Friend insisted and I saw a Moira Rose vs famously redacted files magazine spread and I went back to watch it. Realized Moira is having a meltdown that you can’t put these two wigs together because they don’t LIKE EACH OTHERRR!! Locked in. Ugh, maybe I should watch that again.
19
u/onorsworthy 15d ago
Oh do yourself a solid and rewatch. The characters start off self obsessed and needy, by the end of the show they’ve all completely changed and you honestly don’t notice. It’s like they keep there “isms” but the intent behind them changes. Season 4-the end are where it really ramps up but its all so good!

Shrinking. All of the commercials made it look like "Jason Segel is a middle-aged white guy stuck in his well-paying job. And that makes him sad :-( ". Then I saw a short on Instagram and it turns out to be a hilarious, but surprisingly sensitive story about grief and how we cope with it. It also has, in my opinion, one of Harrison Ford's best roles.
86
u/baidu_me 16d ago
This one is mine too. Refused until I walked in the room while my wife was watching and sobbing. Just minutes earlier I was in my office and swore she was audibly laughing.
Turns out, that’s the show in a nutshell. Incredible layered characters, an honest (albeit upper middle class white leaning) look at grief, and an unbelievable performance by Harrison Ford. Oh and Ted McGinley just steals every scene he is in and makes my short list of best TV husbands of all time.

GLOW. I'm a lady and wrestling is gross to me. But it's actually a show about how hard it was for a woman to make it as an actress in LA, and finding community in odd places.
Similarly, it took so long for me to get my mom to watch Ted Lasso. Because she doesn't like sports. I explained to her that it's not really about sports, it's about how to be a decent man in a world that teaches manhood requires a lot of horrible, toxic behavior. Thus centering the story around a professional sports team requires the hero to do that in the most masculine, toxic environment possible. Of course she now loves the show.

Imho in the first season it’s still feeling its way through being a goofy animated comedy, then in season 2 it becomes “what if the existential dread but incredible snappiness, style, social commentary and character development that combine to create Mad Men were instead animated, and Don Draper was instead a talking horse?” and magic was made.

My partner and I fell off that show probably around the end of the first season/beginning of the second, and this was around the time the last season was airing and everyone was in full Schitt’s Creek fever, including a lot of people whose taste is usually similar to mine! I was so confused — the show did not gel for us AT ALL. And I was a big fan of the Christopher Guest mockumentaries so loved Eugene Levy and especially Catherine O’Hara! I was so surprised I wasn’t liking it more.
Eventually I started from scratch when my partner was out of town and blew through it once Patrick was introduced — I feel like it really finds its footing from there and becomes a much warmer show. I absolutely love it now. (I told partner all this and he still refuses to try again.)

Yea I think I saw the first ep or 2 when it first aired and it didn’t grab me. Had no idea they retooled in season 2 and recast in season 3 to great effect both times. Wound up randomly seeing a late season 4 ep without context. The one where Ben gets his campaign clock cleaned by Jen Barkley.
I didn’t know he’d recently been fired and lost his confidence. I didn’t know he’s kind of dweeb but smart. I didn’t know any of the dynamics. So I just thought it was this painfully unfunny show about a competent woman and her small town country bumpkin idiot boyfriend. It could not have lost me more.
After finally watching the whole thing boy howdy was I off. Great show. Great season. Great episode.

Justified. I grew up in eastern Kentucky, and I noped out over the brown dusty hills of California pretending to be the verdant mountain forests of my youth. Gave it another shot after a year or so and never regretted it. Learned to overlook the dusty backdrop (and the round trip from Lexington to Harlan being a quick jaunt rather than an arduous day trip). Boyd Crowder and Mags Bennett are two of the greatest TV characters ever.

Ted Lasso. Why would I watch a show about football? Yeah... Wrong! I've never cared for a team so much in my life!! One of the most beautiful shows I've watched in a long time
Edit to add: The Orville. Never have I ever cared for any of star Trek kind of shows... Then I watched a couple of episodes of this and I became obsessed. I'm still mad there's no more seasons

Yellowjackets, I thought it was going to be a boring drama but my wife said let's give it chance. Turns out it was a really good show.

Santa Clarita Diet - based on the initial teaser trailer, I thought it would be corny. Boy was I wrong, the comedic writing was extremely well done. Timothy olyphant steals the show. Still can’t believe Netflix cancelled it on a massive cliffhanger

One Piece Live Action. I had seen the manga around and really disliked the drawing style. I watch anime and enjoy a lot of it, but the OP stuff just didn't attract me at all.
Then a friend persuaded me to watch the Live Action version, and it's one of the most beautiful things I have seen. Brilliant cast and wonderful production values. Funny, heartfelt, exciting- it's something I have revisited several times now (Season 2 is even better than 1 for me).

I didn’t swear I would never watch it, but as a guy, I figured Gilmore Girls wasn’t really for me, but boy howdy, I have been enjoying the character work the writers put into that show.

The Leftovers.
Took 3 tries years apart to get through the first season, then when I did I was hooked and season 2 especially was an experience.

Downton Abbey. I had a hard time with the first episode because I didn’t understand the whole financial arrangements with marriage and that when a woman married, her money became her husband‘s

Both Parks and Rec and Schitt's Creek. It took a couple of tries to get into both shows but once I made it a few episodes in I loved both shows. I wonder if the Office would be the same because every time I try to watch it I just cant connect.

The Queen's Gambit. Kept seeing it, have zero interest in chess so wasn't interested. Clips of it started coming up on TikTok and I thought I'd give it a go. Have now seen it 4 times!

Modern Family It was everywhere I looked and every time I turned on the tv to watch something on my favorite channel I find it instead. And it had sooo many seasons it felt like it never ends.
Anyway it's in my top 3 comedy and comfort shows ever now lol

Gilmore Girls. I really didn’t know much about it. I started watching it while on the treadmill at the gym.

My friend told me about a junk-food college, sex-drama show he was watching, and that I ”had“ to watch it now because I forced him to watch The Chair Company.
The show was Tell Me Lies and I blew through the seasons to catch up in time for the final season. I hated nearly every character in the show, and wasn’t giving it a chance really (about 6 episodes in or so), and then it clicked. You aren’t SUPPOSED to like the characters. The show is so much more entertaining when you root for the sociopath and I think back on it and miss it, honestly.
They nailed the finale, and stayed true to (the incredibly flawed) characters.
The moment I got hooked? S2E3, Main Character let psycho manipulate/fuck her over her entire freshman year, and so for the first two episodes she is “a changed girl!” “fuck Stephen!” And then episode 3, we get this: I have never laughed so hard. Stephen is so cold and fuck Lucy, lol.

Virgin River. I thought it would be so boring, and it was. But it was also cosy and quite funny. It became one of my fav easy-watches.

Better Call Saul. I just wasn't interested, though I'd watched Breaking Bad when it aired and loved it. Last month I decided to watch since folks close to me insisted it was amazing. Wow.

Halt and Catch Fire. In my defense, there were barely any PR when this came out so I checked it out when the show was already over and I was absolutely floored

Bob's Burgers. I was originally put off by the animation and Bob's voice, but after watching on a whim while recovering from surgery, I was hooked.
I also didn't watch Archer because I thought his voice sounded dumb. Now H. Jon Benjamin's voice has a calming influence on me.
