Hello, we would like to inform the community of a change to the wording of Rule 3. Previously this rule only stated that fan art must be properly credited when posted. The moderation team has interpreted this for the past few years as meaning all AI art, which inherently cannot be credited to the artists from which it was trained on, has no place on this forum. We have now updated Rule 3 to be more explicit and clear on this.
AI art on the sub is always quickly reported as such, and in the short time it is ever up, is overwhelmingly negatively commented on, so we have chosen to make this change first and open up the floor below in case we have misjudged the community’s feelings on this.
Functionally there should be no change to how the sub was already operating.
Cheers!

helloooooooooo i'm back
2 days ago, i watched the first two episodes of Neon Genesis Evangelion
i've been pretty pumped overall since i began liking it even before starting to watch it
and i like it a lot!
anyways...i watched episodes 3 and 4, here's my thoughts on it:
...
i take these for the moment where the plot starts moving a little less shyly. not that the slower pacing of the first two episodes is bad...in fact, i quite like it! but i did notice the pacing in episodes 3 and 4 is somewhat faster.
anyhow...i really like how these characters find ways to be important
even characters as seemingly irrelevant as toji and kensuke have moments where they can somewhat show who they are as people.
i really found the tension built on whether shinji would win shamsel interesting. you really get to question whether he can do it this time...and at the end he does...but then he has this argument with misato and that makes him run away, besides the stress piloting an Evangelion gives.
i'm glad that, at the end, he stayed. this series is really unpredictable so i couldn't tell whether he'd stay or leave in episode 4's ending.
...a question i do have is: it's kensuke homeless?
i mean- he's in a...tent thingy, maybe he's homeless...maybe he's not...and he did mention not having a mother, much like shinji who doesn't have yui...or well, technically has her soul in unit 01 but he doesn't know.
anyhow, i'm super excited to see more! even if i know that this series is gonna absolutely destroy me emotionally.
anyhow,
Good Night.
Good Morning.
Thank You.
Goodbye.

hellooooooo everyone.
i've been interested in the Evangelion franchise since september...around the 19th day i started to dig more and i've spoiled myself a lot of things....but only today did i start watching the series.
here's my honest opinion: it is a very promising series. i think i like the fact that it doesn't rush into action...it has a rather slow pace which helps a lot with what i assume is the worldbuilding.
i find episode 2's decision of only showing the rest of the angel fight near the end very interesting...although i didn't understand it well, but i didn't dislike it.
the scenery, the landscapes, etc...are very well done. for something made in the 90s, these look almost 3D at some points, the animation really stands the test of time
it is the first anime i'm getting into...i know that Evangelion is known to be emotionally crushing and touch upon many philosophical themes...so i'm diving with both weariness and excitement
thanks for reading, bye!

This is the 1st real parallel between the 2 shows.
We see one of the main characters appear in a place they shouldn't.
With Rei she appears near Shinji even though Shinji hasn't even met her yet and she should be back at NERV right now.
With Mort, we see him appear in Julien's dream.
Now, this wouldn't be so strange if it wasn't for the fact that we see Julien meet Mort irl for the very 1st time later in the episode.

Now we have yet another parallel, we have the protagonist's father figure forcing them into a position of power.
Gendo manipulates Shinji into piloting Eva-01.
Julien's uncle abdicates the throne resulting in Julien becoming the new king.
I'd say the biggest difference between these 2 scenes is how the protagonists react.
Julien reacts with a naive childish excitement, while Shinji reacts with self-doubt, anger, and confusion.

Later in the episode, Julien throws a party that attracts the fossa.
Now we actually see a genuine similarity between Shinji and Julien as characters.
They both tend to get sucked into their emotions.
Shinji and Julien both get sucked into one emotion in particular during these scenes, fear.
Shinji freezes and lets his Eva fight the angel for him.
Julien runs away from the fossa screaming "Everybody flee for your lives!!!"

We also see the consequences of Julien's actions and Shinji's inaction, with the angel blowing up, creating a massive cross shaped explosion undoubtably causing a lot of damage and the Lemur Kingdom being left deserted after the fossa took most of the lemurs and the lemurs who ran away never came back.

Also, not only do NGE and AHKJ have narrative similarities, they have genuine thematic similarities as well.
The 1st episode of AHKJ concludes with Julien giving a speech.
"Of course Maurice. The fossa will return, and try to slash us to pieces with their razor sharp teeth. Look, guys, we're a bunch of lemurs in the jungle baby, there is nothing here that doesn't want to eat us, to poison us, or to swallow us up in gooey black pits of deadlyness, but I learned something today. Something I already knew, but then forget, but then learned again. Even more, and it is this, if there may not be a tomorrow, then we got to live extra big today!"
Likewise EoE ends with a very thematically similar speech given by Rei, Kaworu, and Yui.
"Reality exists in a place unknown, and dreams exist within reality. And truth lies in your heart. The contents of a person's heart shapes their appearance. And new images will change their hearts and their forms. The power of imagination is the ability to create your own future, and the power to create your own flow of time. But if people don't act of their own free will, then nothing will change at all. So, you must regain your own lost form by your own volition. Even if it means your words become lost... or confused with the words of others. Anyone can return to human form... as long as they are able to imagine themselves within their own heart. Don't worry. All living creatures have the power to be brought back to life... and the will to go on living. Anywhere can be paradise, as long as you have the will to live. After all, you are alive, so you will always have the chance to be happy. As long as the Sun, the Moon, and the Earth exist, everything will be alright"

The characters of Pineapple and Kaworu also strongly parallel eachother.
Kaworu meets Shinji and they form a very close bond.
Julien is given Pineapple as an adviser and becomes extremely attached to him.
Both Pineapple and Kaworu essentially ask the same question "Will you sacrifice the person you are most attached to, to save everyone else you care about?" and I think it's interesting how Julien and Shinji's answers to those questions differ.

Shinji does the obvious thing, sacrifice the person you were closest to, to save everyone else you care about.
Julien does something very unexpected, he sacrifices himself to save everyone else.

Although in the end Julien does still make a similar decision to Shinji, choosing to have Mort destroy Pineapple with a hammer.

Both Shinji and Julien have an, unfortunate relationship with their parents.
Shinji's mom "died" when he was young and his father left him to be raised by his teacher.
Julien's parents never cared about him all that much and when the Julien family was attacked by fossa they left him with his dictator uncle.

Shinji, Asuka, and Julien all have this in common as well.
They all do a lot of what they do primarily for the approval of others.
For Shinji and Asuka it's piloting Evas, for Julien it's orchestrating his conspiracies.

Both stories also end with the main thing that has protected our protagonists leaving.
Shinji says goodbye to Yui/Eva-01 and Julien says goodbye to Clover.

Both stories also end with the main duo we've been following under a starry sky and small amounts of growth for our protagonists without them being automatically fixed people afterwards.
With The End of Evangelion ending with Shinji deciding he doesn't want to live in a world without others and Julien taking responsibility for his actions and not blaming them on Maurice in the last episode of All Hail King Julien, but Shinji still has a lot of built up rage that he takes out on Asuka by choking her and the final episode of All Hail King Julien is just Julien orchestrating one last conspiracy before the credits roll.
Also I mean, they're both shows that skew older than their original intended audience that are infamous for how weird and dark they are.
They both have self-destructive protagonists who aren't that much of fighters.
The casts of both shows are mostly made up of morally complex characters.
In both shows one of the main characters is revealed to be an eldritch being.
Both shows have weird and zany eldritch beings instead of just dull-colored tentacle dudes.
They even both have themes of learning from your mistakes and pushing on and trying to live in hard times.
