Nanny Pay 💰 [All Welcome] Nanny quit but when is end date?

Our nanny quit recently for a desk job. She has an opportunity to do a job she trained for and we are so happy she can do it - but ultimately sad since she and our child bonded so much. Unfortunately she only gave 1.5 week notice. She had already requested the Thursday and Friday of the last week off as vacation days.

Question is - is her last day on Wednesday (day before her vacation) or Friday (includes vacation days we previously discussed).

My child loved her so much so would like to give her something. Maybe some of what we were going to give her end of year bonus before she quit? Not sure what is right. Appreciate the advice!

If she had PTO days remaining per your contract, I would let her use them.

You are not obligated to pay a bonus to an employee who quita especially on such short notice

Plus many places require paying out vacation days, so OP would really do better to just let her have those days off anyways.

I would not give a bonus to someone leaving you in a semi lurch. Plus I can think of no other industry that gives a quitting bonus.

I’d pay her until Friday if she had PTO remaining. I don’t expect a bonus when I’m leaving a position. I’d still take it though. Haha

Any unused PTO should be cashed out anyway when she separates, so if she has the available PTO then you should pay that.

If you're not so formal with tracking...then I'd probably pay her the two days and consider that her bonus.

I’d just pay it if the money won’t hurt you terribly but I wouldn’t be giving a bonus to an employee who is leaving on short notice.

No bonus - ask her if she’s available for date nights

Hmm not sure what the question really means? Why does it matter wed vs Fri?

That’s two days of pay difference

She has PTO. So either she will use it or OP will pay it out. As an employer is obligated to do.

As a blanket statement, this is false. PTO payout requirements vary by state, and only a minority of states mandate payment of accrued, unused vacation upon separation. In most states, the employers written policy or employment contract determines whether a payout is required.

OP is in New York. So what I wrote is accurate for OP. Who I was writing it about.

She’s ending her employment without proper notice? Contracts go both ways.
