Current cheapest exchange for BTC?

Which is the cheapest exchange for purchasing bitcoin that accepts NZ bank deposits and transfer to cold wallet?

I’ve been using Swyftx but I also see there’s PIN and lightening pay? I’ve just been accumulating like 1k before transferring to my cold wallet to save on fees

Bitcoin Education I made a plain-English bitcoin site for Kiwis: buying, IRD tax and self custody. Keen for corrections

Kia ora all,

Friends and family keep asking me the same questions about bitcoin, so I wrote the answers up in one place: whybitcoin.nz

It’s free, it has no ads and it takes no referral fees. It doesn’t name any exchanges either. It points people to the FSP register and the FMA warning list so they can check a provider themselves.

What’s on it:

  • Why bitcoin: the case for owning some, with every figure linked to a source in the footer.
  • Buying bitcoin in NZ: the main ways to buy, what fees to look for, scam red flags, and what the new CARF reporting rules mean.
  • Bitcoin tax in NZ: how IRD’s purpose test works, when tax applies and when it doesn’t, a worked example, and record keeping.
  • Self custody: setting up a hardware wallet, how to store your recovery words, and inheritance. There’s also a section on recent hardware wallet incidents, and why you should buy devices straight from the maker.

It’s meant for people new to bitcoin, so it keeps things simple and includes a section on the risks.

What I’d like from this sub: if anything is wrong, out of date or missing for NZ, tell me. That goes double for the tax page. There’s a contact form on the site, or just comment here and I’ll fix it.

Cheers.

Hi All, Has anyone dealt with Taxhawk for a Crypto voluntary disclosure / Tax submission? I have been in contact with Taxhawk since the start of the year, and I am now having issues with a submission with IRD. Just trying to find out if this is a legitimate accountant. Thanks

NZ Bitcoin Startup I spent the last year building Flow Crypto, a Kiwi owned crypto brokerage. We’re now live!

Hi everyone, I’m Eli, the founder of Flow Crypto.

For roughly the last year, We've been building Flow from scratch. We recently launched, so I wanted to introduce ourselves here.

The idea is straightforward: make it easy for New Zealanders to buy and sell crypto using NZD, with purchases delivered directly to their own wallets, with over 50+ coins supported. We’re NZ owned and operated, use a local BNZ account for NZD payments, and also support swaps and recurring purchases.

Getting here involved a lot more than building the website. Banking, compliance, identity verification and everything behind the scenes have been a big part of the journey. It’s exciting to finally have people using something I’ve spent so long working on.

We’re still small, but we’ve already welcomed a few customers and received some really positive reviews on Trustpilot, which has been lovely to see.

To help people try Flow, we’re offering the first 100 new signups NZ$10 in credit towards their first purchase. - If you have already signed up message me and I will credit your account.

The website is https://www.flowcrypto.co.nz/

I’d genuinely appreciate feedback too. Whether you’re an experienced crypto user or just having a look, let me know what’s clear, what’s confusing and what could be better.

I hope everyone who gives us a go has a great experience. Ask questions here or message me directly. I’m always happy to have a chat or help where I can.

Thanks for taking a look!
Eli

Offboarding Stables to Fiat - What is everyone using nowadays?

I know this comes up a fair bit but I want to get the latest consensus on what solutions Kiwis are using to off ramp crypto to fiat. I’ve been out of the loop for a few years and missed that easy crypto is gone. What are the current options for cashing out a relatively large amount of stables?

So far I gathered a very basic understanding of 3 options:

  1. Lightening pay - open banking, BTC only (presumably some people are going from stables - btc - fiat?)

  2. Independent Reserve - BTC only as above, is it reliable for withdrawal to any NZ bank acc?

  3. swyftfx / previously easy crypto - bad reviews and best avoided ???

Any other options?

Bitcoin Education [Auckland] Two free Bitcoin basics sessions + a heavily discounted self-custody workshop — 16–18 September

Post image
9 Upvotes

Hey r/NZBitcoin - Simon from Stacked here.

We’ve teamed up with Francisco and Luli from Bitcoin Journey and Radical Investment to run three small, in-person workshops in central Auckland for people at different points in their Bitcoin journey.

The first two are free Bitcoin Basics sessions: for people who are curious, have bought some bitcoin but never had the fundamentals explained, or know someone who has been meaning to get started.

  • Wednesday 16 September, 6:00–8:00pm
  • Thursday 17 September, 10:30am–12:30pm
  • 167 Victoria Street West, Auckland

They cover the same material, so choose whichever time suits. No prior experience needed.

Francisco will also running a separate hands-on Self-Custody Workshop:

  • Friday 18 September, 10:00am–12:30pm
  • Heavily discounted at NZ$350, including a hardware wallet to take home and NZ$5 of bitcoin to practise with
  • Bring a laptop

It’s for people ready to properly understand holding their own keys: setting up a hardware wallet, receiving and sending bitcoin, long-term storage, privacy, fees, and the mistakes worth avoiding.

The photos are from previous Bitcoin Journey workshops, so you can see the kind of class these are—not a sales presentation.

Full details and registrations:

If you know someone in Auckland who has wanted a straightforward, in-person introduction to Bitcoin, please send it their way.

New Zealand Police have no system built for cryptocurrency fraud

The NZ Police have no offence code for crypto fraud. Without a category, there's no structure to the data. Cases sit scattered, and the only way to pull them together is a keyword search Police say they lack the capacity to verify.

No structure means no insight - you can't see whether the same method is hitting different victims, or the same offender is showing up across reports.

And what you can't see, you can't measure, control, resource or fix.

Seeking Feedback New at Stacked - On-Chain DCA (direct to your cold storage) and Pay Anyone Links

Hey All,

Just giving you a heads up that Stacked has made a few major changes today.

Autostack directly On-Chain

Probably our most requested feature at the moment. You no longer need to use Stacked Wallet or another Lightning wallet to setup a recurring bitcoin purchase through the Autostack feature. When you setup an Autostack in your account, you can now choose an external on-chain address by:

  • Simply entering your on-chain address during the Autostack setup process
  • Or, save an on-chain address to your account in Settings, and use it when you setup Autostack

For those of you that are using Stacked via your hardware wallet or other on-chain wallet exclusively, you're now able to up your game and setup a truly set-and-forget stacking strategy using a combination of an open banking connection and your cold storage wallet.

A few details:

  • Minimum purchase for On-Chain is $50
  • Requires an valid Akahu connection for in your payment options
  • Setup is currently only available via Stacked in your Web browser
    • You can manage your auto stack via the Stacked Wallet mobile app, but setting up a new on-chain Autostack should be coming next week to the app as well.

We still recommend that you make your direct-to-on-chain purchases count and that you use a Lightning Wallet or Stacked Wallet for anything less than $500 (at today's prices) when you DCA. If you want to find out more about why, check out our DCA savings calculator.

Pay Anyone in NZ with a Link from Stacked Wallet

Sick of listening to your buddy who just won't get off zero? Want to pay a contractor in bitcoin and not sure how to get them started? Send them a link from Stacked Wallet and pay them in bitcoin.

Pay Anyone links allow you to generate a link, and send it to anyone via text message, email, Telegram, however you like.

  • Login to your Stacked Account in Stacked Wallet
  • Tap "Pay Anyone"
  • Enter an amount (sats or NZD), less than NZ$1000 in value
  • Choose a valid period (1 hr, 24 hrs, 3 days or 7 days)
  • Tap Share, and send away through whatever mechanism you want

To Claim the bitcoin, the recipient needs to:

  • Tap the link
  • Follow the link to download Stacked Wallet if they don't have it already
  • Tap "Claim" on the web browser
  • A new wallet will automatically be generated for them, and the bitcoin deposited into the wallet

Lastly, as the payer, you always have the capability to cancel or reverse the link back to your own Stacked Wallet up until the time it is claimed. Unclaimed links will revert back to your Stacked Wallet automatically when the link expires.

Feedback Wanted

Particularly on the Pay Anyone links. We thought it might be a fun way to get your friends their first touch point with bitcoin in a low pressure way. We have a lot of ideas on where this feature could go next, but I'd like to hear from you what you think.

Thanks

Thanks to those of you who have shared your feedback with us in the past, you've contributed mightily to our direction and the services we offer. We really appreciate it.

We're here to make bitcoin, real bitcoin, in your hands, in your control, as easy as possible for Kiwis. Let us know how we can make that easier for you next.

Crypto Conference Data Harvesting Site

Hi all,

If anyone has received or come across the following link: nzblockchainsummit[.]com - I would recommend exercising extreme caution interacting or providing information.

This is highly likely a data harvesting/phishing site, where the information will be used later in cold call scams to those who respond, similar to the fake nz police crypto calls going around recently.
