Bang on. The financial rules were to pull the ladder up behind them and everyone agreeing to never be able to compete was absolutely nonsense.

Yes but the rules are there! You can’t have them and then just let city get away with it. Do I have a problem with clubs buying all the best players to win the league? Not really. Do I have a problem with clubs breaking rules and committing fraud to do so? Yes

This.
The reason City are going to be punished and I'm glad is because they had a chance to challenge these rules, and use their army of lawyers to make the league fair for all.
Instead, they thought they could cheat while at the same time using the rules to institute the glass ceiling below them.
This is where people are failing to understand where a lot of us stand.
We don't agree with city at all. Their actions were completely wrong and they should be dissolved and forced to restart at the foot of the pyramid.
But, the rules are also completely anti competitive.
If city had used their trillions to fight for a fairer league we would all be better for it.
However they saw the rules, thought they could cheat, and then also benefit from the rules cementing the glass ceiling for the rest of us.
It's clear what they did - they wanted in the room with the cartels, and then for the rest of us to be handcuffed to said rules.
That's why they deserve to be punished. They could have fought the right way, instead the tried to cheat, and at the same time use the rules against everyone.
So fuckem all.

They'll be punished. It's just nice seeing the 3 clubs who feel entitled and who want everything, squirm.
To me, it doesn't make any difference if 6th is our natural consistent limit and the Red clubs winning 95% of titles, or 7th is our natural limit with City in there, too.
Not being able to dream, though, makes me side more with what City have done.
3
u/charlos74 3d ago
I just don’t see anything to admire from what City have done. They saw the broken rules, and rather than try and challenge them or win anyway while playing within them, they just cheated.
They’ve just joined the same cartel you complain about and have made it many times worse for other clubs looking to challenge. The rules were tightened for us, points deductions for PSR began, and we’re under more scrutiny than we’d ever have been.
If we build a title challenging team despite these rules, we’ll have a right to be proud. I don’t want us to be associated with City.

u/stprm 3d ago edited 3d ago
I'm so tired of our fans trying to defend man city. I totally get the desire to hate cartel, but mancity deserve very harsh punishment.
Mancity would have won half of everything they did, if they didnt cheat. They were set up for good because they bought star players before FFP, even tho their early recruiting was awful. But they wanted everything and now. They didnt used to rules (because their kings live that way), they came and arrogantly broke the rules.
They also voted for FFP, so they took off the ladder that they climbed. They didnt wanted new competitors either.
Also, call me crazy, I dont think any club should be able to just buy the league. There should be a spending cap. If half of PL is gonna be a PSG and the other half are just "punching bag" - I dont think that would be very watchable. That is just a super league lite. You should think about the pyramid, EFL and non league, too. Spending a lot of money is also a problem for fans - in terms of tickets and watching sport legally without being overpriced.
The issue right now with rules is that cartel has almost unlimited spending power and others dont. It should be as close to a level playing field as possible, but imo, with spending cap and other rules, like to force owners who want to spend, to put some money away, in case of admin and etc. When they sell the club, they get their money back.
1
u/PurpleGalea 3d ago
I think city should be punished for sure, they broke the financial rules. I bet they get 50 points at least, having said that the thing that annoys me is everyone treating breaking these financial rules means what they did has been invalidated. Just buying the league is not possible though, look at at Manure, they've shit the bed and spent huge money over the last 10 years.
If they'd paid off refs, used drugs, paid off other teams, sure I'd agree. But somehow Barca paying off refs is less of a story than city breaking financial rules? And no one cares about Barca? Yet that is significantly worse to me.
People seem to be hell bent on the money side, which I don't really care about, I care that they got an unfair advantage over mid table teams, sure. But I don't think it's that bad to be honest.
2
u/charlos74 3d ago
It is invalidated. They refused to play by the same rules as everyone else.
-1
u/PurpleGalea 3d ago
Ok chief, have you said the same about Barcelona?
2
u/PenIsBroken Ellen Sheeba 3d ago
Do we have to add our outrage about Barca every time we talk about City now? What a weird comment. There are places to discuss that too but this thread is not about Barca.
2
u/PurpleGalea 3d ago
No that's not what I'm saying, but you understand my point right? I think paying refs is worse than breaking financial fair play rules, for some reason most people don't.
That's the point I'm making
EDIT: and the second point is, somehow financial rules means all their achievements and invalidated ( I'd don't think so, I hope they get relegated, but they did win fairly on the pitch imo ). Yet somehow Barca get away with nothing for paying off the refs? Wild to me
2
u/PetalumaPegleg 3d ago
I'm unclear where I suggested they should get away with it. Not sure why that means I have to like the financial rules and their goals.
28
u/BruiserBroly 3d ago
Meh, if City used their wealth to lobby against these rules they deem unfair then I’d be more willing to believe this narrative that they were doing this for the other clubs but they didn’t. They just ignored the rules and forced the league to spend money that should be going to those clubs on investigations and legal fees.
17
u/TheHellequinKid 3d ago
I don't get why people can't see this. They aren't benevolent saviours. They just think the rules in life that lock down the rest of us aren't relevant to their higher status.
Football would be much much worse if the only way to get to the top was to be bought by rich dictatorships. Welcome to a new servitude.
4
u/TotalBlank87 Kevin Keegan 3d ago
I don't agree with the rules in practice. They are overly restrictive. But City's cheating was obscene. Have you seen the emails!? It's incredible
4
u/TheHellequinKid 3d ago
The rules themselves are fine in theory, the problem is we aren't starting from the same baseline. In this situation is does entrench the status quo. But the way to get to parity would be better revenue sharing or in a more extreme world, some sort of hard cap on squad spending.
In the meantime it's just important everyone follows the rules, otherwise it isn't parity.
1
u/TotalBlank87 Kevin Keegan 3d ago
Don't talk about parity when 2 clubs competing in the same league are not allowed to spend anywhere near the same money. And never will!
2
u/TheHellequinKid 3d ago
Name me a league in any sport where all teams have equal spending, without there being a hard cap....
2
u/Regular-Principle575 2d ago
Name me a league where you have a group of 3-4 clubs beneath the elite with the financial means to compete?
1
u/TheHellequinKid 2d ago
Beneath the big 6? That's also 3x the number that compete in Spain, 6x Germany and France, and 2x Italy. So already I question the premise.
However, to play the game... I think Newcastle, Villa, Everton under the right ownership, could all grow to compete with the big 6 through increasing commercial revenues.
I think there's a next tier who aren't competing financially but are on the pitch through better scouting, player pitches etc and that's Brighton, Bournemouth and Brentford. Because what is starting to become clearer with the new UEFA structure is that the Europa and Conference tiers can now offer a route to a trophy that really didn't exist before. And if they aren't in Europe they are less fatigued. Couple that with severe downturns on the pitch for Spurs and Man U in recent years and it's led to faster opportunities.
This isn't me saying it's perfect, just that's it's better than unleashed financial spending. As I said at the start, better revenue sharing will smooth it further, for example not basing payments on league position as heavily or more evenly splitting the TV revenue. But that's hard to do and takes time. You can see the big 6 feels threatened though, that's why ideas like the Super League get thrown around, it's a way to lock their elite status in before the rules reign them in.
2
u/Regular-Principle575 2d ago
Ourselves & Villa have grown commercially massively the last 3-4 years. It doesn't touch the sides of what the establishment are making. As big as we grow, those clubs just grow bigger.
1
u/TheHellequinKid 2d ago
I'm a Toon fan as well, one of the big criticisms post takeover has been the slow growth of commercials, yet we've still won a trophy and been in the UCL twice. Not small feats and absolutely necessary to disrupt the top 6. Same with Villa. It can't happen in a short time span and it does need phases to succeed, but in 5 years I'd expect us to be bringing in the same as Spurs from sponsorship and other commercials, possibly with the new stadium close to completion. That's not half bad.

u/TotalBlank87 Kevin Keegan 3d ago
I can't name another league in the world that actually enforces unequal spending!
3
u/TheHellequinKid 3d ago
Of course you can. Barca and Madrid in Spain, PSG in France to the extent they even rearrange games to favour them, all European leagues are subject to UEFAs spending rules too.
City cheated the rules and should be punished accordingly. Anything else is a matter for the clubs to discuss, they almost unanimously voted in these rules anyway so they must value them against the alternative.
3
u/TotalBlank87 Kevin Keegan 3d ago
You want it to be like the French and Spanish leagues? And what alternative? Is there only one alternative situation?
2
u/TheHellequinKid 3d ago
The alternative is they can't agree on spending rules and it becomes unrestricted, which is how we got Chelsea and Man City in the first place.
My point is disparity exists everywhere, in the PL it's actually not that bad compared to other European leagues. Soon to be even better when City gets relegated. It needs tweaks to get more parity long term but it's much better than unrestricted spending and more oil barons / states juicing the league.
1
u/Regular-Principle575 3d ago
I don't think they were, but it's put the microscope on the laws which have been lobbied for by those clubs. They'll get punished but other clubs fans need to start to rally against those laws, otherwise, like i say, expect decades of Red titles with no-one getting a look in. We could have such an exciting league with more even rules.
3
u/Anonamoose12771 Sir Bobby Robson 3d ago
City could have been the driving force to rally against that and took us all with them. Instead they chose to cheat and then pull the drawbridge up behind them by voting in FFP and joining the Super League.
The fact so many fans in this thread are drinking the city kool-aid is sickening. They’re cheats, nothing more.
1
u/Regular-Principle575 3d ago
They were the ones who took legal action against the Premier League when APT rules were introduced the day after PIF bought us.
2
u/Anonamoose12771 Sir Bobby Robson 2d ago
Yes but they were only ever looking after their own interests. ATP rules aren’t necessarily a bad thing either. Sponsors should be genuine and at market rate. Would it be fair if we were just allowed to pour as much money in as we wanted through sham deals like city did?
0
u/Regular-Principle575 2d ago
If there was a fairer Financial Fair Play system, this wouldn't be necessary. Like i said though, the bigger clubs in this country since 1990 have took greed to levels where the only way to compete, is by doing what Chelsea and City did.
1
u/BruiserBroly 2d ago
A case they settled with the Premier League when they got what they wanted out of it, for their Etihad shirt sponsorship renewal to be approved. That’s all they wanted, they couldn’t care less about changing the rules for anyone else.
1
u/Regular-Principle575 2d ago
I wish our ownership had a bit of that "oomph" about themnand challenged the Premier League a bit more to be honest. City will get charged and we'll get to challenge to be the 6th biggest club rather than 7th. Yay.
1
u/BruiserBroly 2d ago
Eh, I’m not as negative about the rules as others. There are areas in the rules that encourage investment like the women's team (all revenue they make helps us), the academy (not only for bringing through players for the first team but making money through sales), and infrastructure that we haven't exploited as much as we could.
If we've done everything we can within the rules and we're still miles away from the elite then sure, I'd be more willing to back the calls for reform and we'd be in a better position to argue that they need to be changed. At the moment, we've only tried one thing.
0
u/Anonamoose12771 Sir Bobby Robson 2d ago
Is that the same oomph that could get them expelled from the league?
0
u/CareBearCartel 3d ago
It's because they see city win those titles and think we could be like them. We are a club where our ownership is an absolute mirror of city's. So these people think "well if city get away with it, then we can too".

u/Rickwan101 Old badge (1983-1998) 3d ago edited 3d ago
I just watched the highlights from today. Literally the whole time I'm thinking "would this team really be thing" without the cheating. It's already tainted. Southampton last year got -4 for sending a dude to someone else's ground to take pictures. This changed a whole clubs trajectory. The punishment needs to fit the crime and this is massive. To me it's crazy to think differently.
7
u/TotalBlank87 Kevin Keegan 3d ago
The players would just have signed for Man Utd, Chelsea or Liverpool instead and they'd have just won more trophies. Wow, how incredibly exciting for us all
5
u/Regular-Principle575 3d ago
You'd most likely have seen 15 years of Haaland & De Bruyne at Arsenal, Rodri at Liverpool (with Sterling staying there), Stones to Man Utd and so on. The Red clubs pulling even further away from the rest, getting richer.
I saw someone have the cheek (Liverpool fan), saying City's cheating means we're watching Anderson at Man City. Unironically mentioning that it's these PSR rules which meant we had to sell him and Mimteh (who very ironically) almost signed for Liverpool for big money this summer.
I wish they hadn't cheated, but I've preferred these 14 or so years to the alternative.
9
u/charlos74 3d ago
The rules are broken, but City’s cheating doesn’t help us at all.
They could have challenged the rules, but instead they cheated and tried to get away with it.
2
u/Regular-Principle575 3d ago
How else were they, or anyone else, going to regularly compete for the title?
2
u/Anonamoose12771 Sir Bobby Robson 3d ago
City had a head start before FFP even existed. Two years under Shinawatra and three under Abu Dhabi. They had the money and the platform to compete, but were too impatient, greedy and arrogant.
Nobody’s denying FFP/SCR protects the established elite, but flawed rules don’t justify breaking them, especially not to the extent City did.
Had they put a fraction of the effort they put into cheating into lobbying for fairer rules, we might have a system where clubs can genuinely compete. They’re a huge part of the reason we are where we are. I hope they get fired into the sun.
1
u/charlos74 3d ago
Exactly. With the head start you mention and continued investment within the rules they’d still be top 3 now.
1
u/Opposite-Peanut-8812 2d ago
I don’t know, maybe ask Man Utd or Liverpool?
-1
u/Regular-Principle575 2d ago
I don't understand. How would asking two of the greedy clubs and have championed to stop any other club from competing get a fair answer?
1
u/Opposite-Peanut-8812 2d ago
They have never cheated by inflating their income or hiding their outgoings.
And they still won a fuck lot of trophies.
20
u/20Kudasai 3d ago
How has city cheating their way to a bunch of trophies been of benefit to anyone else? Obviously the rules are bent but city aren’t some plucky underdog who beat the cartel. They just cheated their way into the cartel then lobbied to pull up the ladder behind them. They pushed for the super league along with all the other Sky 6. I hope they get obliterated
6
u/PMYAIceland 3d ago
Saying what City did is fine or should be celebrated is fucking insane. Yes the rules have benefited certain clubs, but we’re talking about the biggest instance of cheating in the history of sport.
-3
u/PurpleGalea 3d ago
I mean they cheated financially sure, but there has been drug abuse, paying off refs etc, even the Barca news story recently of paying refs I think is significantly worse
I can't get my head round why people think this is the worst kind of cheating, I honestly don't really care. Sure they got an unfair advantage over other mid table teams financially, but looks at spurs, look at Chelsea, look at Manure, it's hardly all about money.
2
u/PMYAIceland 3d ago
It is all about money, you pay more and you win. The scale of the revenue they’ve falsely reported is absurd, 900 million from 09 to 17 and that’s without even looking at the years after. All in all it will be over 2 billion.
0
u/PurpleGalea 2d ago
Why haven't Manure bought the league then? They've spent and are currently spending enough to do so? How did Liverpool or recently arsenal beat city? It's not all about money at all and you know it
2
u/PMYAIceland 2d ago
It is about money broadly speaking, money isn’t just what you spend on transfers, it’s what you spend on wages. Guess which club has the highest wage bill? So no, I don’t know it you prick.

I really dont get the whole red cartel thing. The three teams in question have won 4 of the last 16 titles. Man City have cheated everyone and have dominated in that time. If anyone's the cartel, its them. People acting like they do it for the good of the league instead of for their own gain is baffling.
8
u/EmbarrassedPizza6570 3d ago
Thing is those 3 would’ve won 15/16 of those titles if not for city and Chelsea.
At that point, how is the prem any different to la liga.
4
u/shepaz_93 Joeelinton 3d ago
How is it different to Bundesliga or Ligue 1 if City just dominate and spend freely while everyone else follows the rules. They need booted out, and the financial rules can be looked at sure. But spending with no rules certainly isnt the answer. In an ideal world we would have salary caps so that the top teams in the league cant pull away, but the clubs would never agree.
1
u/EmbarrassedPizza6570 3d ago edited 3d ago
City cheated sure but man utd and Liverpool have no leg to stand on. They spend just as much if not more in man utd’s case than city have. Difference is man utd spend it on Antony, sancho, pogba, casemiro etc. city spent it on kdb, Rodri etc.
there’s a lot more parity in spending between city and the rest of the top 6 in the prem than there is between bayern or psg in their leagues.
-5
u/Phantomfox07 3d ago
Yes, however there is one small difference.
Man Utd and Liverpool arent owned by a foreign state and Man City are. As much as i detest United and the Scouse, they generate their money all above board to finance the players they buy, have the global brand etc where as City were bought by an oil state and had money pumped into them.
1
u/EmbarrassedPizza6570 3d ago edited 3d ago
Right. So Liverpool can get their sugar daddy in the 60s and it’s all good. Everyone else can get left behind
They both have the highest revenue because they outspent everyone for decades without financial restrictions and built their brand.
8
u/MushuFromSpace 3d ago
They think they had a divine right to win.
Man City are going to be punished. That'll play out the way it plays out and that'll be fun.
But fucking hell, their fans are insufferable.
Like a bunch of Facebook mams who cry conspiracy at every turn and can't ever be wrong.
Surprised they're not being looked at closer given the volume they've spent of late tbh.
6
u/DazSmashh Happy Clapper 3d ago
The whole thing just stinks and, I'm sorry, two wrongs don't make a right imo.
City cheated their way in to the cartel, and can you blame them really - we can all sit here and virtuously say that we would turn down that opportunity but - aside from the dross atmosphere at the Etihad - the consistent success, titles, world class players, Champions League title, we would all take that. Any fan in the world would.
And Aguerooooooo is arguably the most iconic footballing moment of the 21st century.
That said, the cartel is an absolute joke and a fat middle finger to the other 14- and as Newcastle fans, we should all be outraged that we are comfortably the richest club in Europe and completely hamstrung by these rules.
I agree that there should be something to stop clubs going like Portsmouth, but FFP, PSR, SCR or whatever acronym they use this season isn't the solution, and City aren't the good guys and never were.
6
u/POITINGOUTCUNTS 3d ago
Incredibly cringe to support anything City have done. They cheated in a basically unheard-of fashion, and they wouldn't give a fuck if they had been on the beneficiary end of the rules.

It's more oppose what the Red Three have created. Like i said, they created a world where a Jack Walker or John Hall was no longer enough to challenge the top.
The only way was what City have done. Are you happy to sit and watch Liverpool, Man Utd and Arsenal just win every title moving forward, even though there are a clutch of clubs beneath with the capability to push them further.
1
u/Opposite-Peanut-8812 2d ago
So everyone just breaks the rules then and gets punished?
If it wasn’t for Cit doing what they did, other teams wouldn’t have gotten richer from the investment created by City becoming the GLOBAL icons they have become. They’re now on the level of Barcelona and Madrid, and investment into the league has happened because of that.
Without that, investment, the ‘big clubs’ don’t get further advances and added income.
If City had done it right, we’d now be in a position to use our wealth to compete. Instead, because of city, we’ve been hamstrung into only using what we bring in, and we can’t inflate our come like they did. So it hurt us more than it helped them.
We’d be much better off now, if city did it the right way.
Personally I want them gone for how much harm they have caused us. They need to be fully punished and out of the league.
I’m not sitting here happy they’re winning games against anybody.
We’re fucked because of what they did. We cannot compete now because of the levels of investment into those ‘big’ clubs.
Fuck city and fuck the PL for allowing this to happen for so long.
1
u/Regular-Principle575 2d ago
How do City reach the top by, "doing it right"? Newcastle & Villa are, "doing it right", and both of our teams are worse today than 2-3 years down the line inspite of commercial growth off the pitch and a relative level of success on it.

u/Opposite-Peanut-8812 2d ago

Chelsea fiddled the books
City fiddled the books
At this point I wouldn't be surprised if most of the top clubs didn't at some point.
1
u/Regular-Principle575 2d ago
We play Villa on Saturday. This should have been two top sides, pushing on and challenging the top 4 in both clubs' trajectories.
Instead, it's two teams fighting over scraps after forcibly being made to sell their best players. Players who they'd have had a great chance of keeping, and adding to, without this horrible, restrictive rules.
Do you think Man City are watching this tonight, and will be watching on Saturday, thinking, "If only we'd played nicely and sold our best players so we could thrash around in mid-table like these two*?
-1
u/Dianime 3d ago
I'm buzzing that city won, I hope they win every game except for when they play us. Fuck ManU, fuck Arsenal, fuck Liverpool.

I am sorry but the rules were not brought in to prevent competition they were brought in to prevent another Portsmouth from happening. The rules literally came in the aftermath of that and they have also been approved by a majority of clubs. I don't disagree that the side effect of the rules have largely protected the big 6 but removing all the financial rules will not create a more competitive league it will just mean that those with the deepest pockets would win. Granted that would probably be us if the Saudis decided to go all in. It also massively increases the risk of clubs spending beyond their means and going bust.
That is not to say the current rules are fit for purpose cause I don't believe they are and I don't really have a solution to allow greater competition. But there needs to be some form of financial controls in place.
As far as Man City, whether or not you like the rules, the rules were in place and they broke them and did so in a massive way. They deserve a heavy punishment
6
u/Regular-Principle575 3d ago
You are very naive. The three aforementioned clubs don't care about another Portsmouth. They very much do care that there isn't another Chelsea or Manchester City.
-1
u/93EXCivic 3d ago
The rules were voted in right after the Portsmouth situation and were voted for 14 of the 20 teams. Also even if they weren't in place and a team chose to spend like crazy there are still the UEFA rules to deal with. You are naive if you think having no financial rules makes the league more competitive

Absolute bullshit 94% of professional clubs in the UK are currently running at a loss. The rules exist only to protect the finances and dominance of the top clubs.

Yeah the Championship, League one and league two are absolutely financially unstable. Look at how many clubs have either gone bust or come very close in the recent past. IIRC the EFL is bring rules in.
Once again I don't like the current rules. They have somewhat locked in a massive advantage for the "big 6". But the argument I see saying basically scrap them and have no rules is silly.

Portsmouth's debt was £105m-£135m when they went into administration. Why did FFP/PSR allow clubs to go £105m into the red over 3 seasons if the rules were to protect clubs from going bust? Plus, why would Spurs and Man U be allowed to go £1bn+ in debt?

I never said they were good rules but if it was some conspiracy by the red cartel why did 11 teams join them in voting them in

Because they didn't want to be left behind and their owners didn't want to get asked by their fans why they aren't investing like other clubs are. There's some clubs who are happy just staying in the PL and not competing, taking the scraps they can get, but if they didn't go with the cartel clubs and vote the rules in then their chances of being relegated would increase as there'd be less places they could compete for. There's more to maintaining the status quo than keeping the teams at the top.
