Libdragon archived

Does anyone know why the libdragon repository was archived on GitHub? I noticed it was archived on October 2nd.

Original repo creator reappeared after many inactive years, decried all use of AI, and referred to current contributors as 'fucking thieves' and 'slimy motherfuckers':

N64Brew has forked the existing work into a new branch within their org and will likely rename the project at some point: https://github.com/n64brew/libdragon

Considering how litigious big-N is then the author is very right to be concerned especially since the projects genesis had to do with copyright status that many current contributors seems to be totally oblivious to or non-caring about.

That said, being mostly inactive and then stepping in assuming to still be a welcomed BDFL is missing social context and then throwing a tantrum when being called out on that isn’t a highpoint.

I think separation is a good thing, if they step over the border on the fork and get DMCA’d, the original should survive (hopefully).

current contributors do care and you are talking without knowing anything

at least just go a bit through the project before you give this type of nonsense opinion

Based on u/AcademicSecret4464 's post, it reads as if the Original creator went on a menty-b and did it, out of god knows what.

The original author stopped maintaining it, and took a step back to focus on Dreamcast dev, which at the time (2018 or so) gave their blessing for others to continue on development.

out of god knows what.

Taking her ball and going home, I guess.

On the one hand I get where she's coming from, even as someone who generally disagrees with AI bans. Libdragon is valuable specifically because it's entirely independent of any Nintendo intellectual property, and therefore (unlike libultra) can be used to create Nintendo 64 games entirely independent of any Nintendo intellectual property. An LLM inadvertently pulling snippets of code from libultra, or from one of the various ROM decomp projects floating around, could be catastrophic to libdragon's existence, since it gives Nintendo (famous for its litigiousness) grounds to invoke a DMCA takedown or otherwise legally intervene. Same reason why Wine prohibits LLM-generated code contributions: it ain't worth risking Microsoft having grounds to take down Wine.

On the other hand, developers can use (and apparently have been using, in libdragon's case) LLMs to assist in other areas of development besides just generating code. It's excessive to prohibit those uses, and the arguments for their prohibition (in that GitHub issue thread and elsewhere) are weak, at best. Wandering into a project you haven't touched in a decade and a half, making a bunch of demands around how the current developers should do their development, and crashing out when you get pushback, is all just plain silly. This sort of “my way or the highway” attitude seems to be pervasive among the anti-AI crowd, and it makes it hard for me to take them seriously or assume good faith from them.
