Question Self-taught producers, how did you do it?

Interested in music production and wanted to ask those who are self-taught. What softwares/youtube tutorials did you start with? How long did it take for you to produce your first track and how long until you produced the first track you were satisfied with?

Discussion The "talent fluke" feeling

Anyone else randomly make a beat thats just so much better than what you usually make and just leaves you sitting there like "how tf did i make this?" The other day I sat on my couch and made a quick 30 min/1 hour beat. And ts genuinely has me questioning how tf i made it? Like none of my other beats reach this level of ear candy, but for some reason out of the blue it feels like I just got a fucking fluke of talent?

Question Seeking breakbeat drum programming guidance

I'd like to learn how to make lower bpm breakbeat/downtempo drum patterns (not jungle/dnb).

I've been messing around with simple patterns, but I'd like to be able to produce patterns like in the following tracks:

A lot of the tutorials I've seen are mostly focused on jungle/dnb, but I'm more interested in a dreamy style.

Any tips/resources would be greatly appreciated!

Question How to make my drops hit harder?

I’m not sure if this is the proper place to ask this, I apologize if not. I have a bad problem with lackluster drops. I enjoy making trap, hyperpop, future bass, and trying to learn more about drum n bass, specifically neurofunk. With trap and hyperpop it’s pretty simple for me, but with dnb and future bass tracks, I can’t ever seem to break through to the drop.

I will create this super cool buildup, it has energy and I’m loving the way it’s going, then when it gets to the drop, I just can’t seem to make it stand out and make it sound nice, it always just ends up sounding like a continuation of the buildup, and all that energy is lost. I don’t really know how to break through this, or really what to add to make the drop work. I’ve watched tons of videos, I’m learning some sound design, I think my problem is I don’t really understand what it is that makes a drop hit so hard. I just end up getting frustrated, then adding a heavier bass, and stack chords, then just scrap the track.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated, if it helps, I can go in later today and create something to show what I mean.

Question Used all my ability to make a song and there are gaps that could make the song better

The problem is my skill level is below what could plug these holes. I want to put it down and come back with more experience. But, ive showed it to a lot of people atp and they say it's already a good song

I have an ep coming in December with 2/4 songs finished unmastered. This could so easily be the third one on there. I will put in comments under spoiler text so that people aren't forced to see it

Question Music equipment needed for Stereo Piano Recording

So I recently bought a Shure SM57 with a Scarlett 2i2 4th gen. My take after some research was that a dynamic mic was the way to go for untreated rooms and that it's a nice budget option since I'm a student.

I recorded some stuff and noticed the very flat sound the piano produces, and so I'd like to get a nice open sound in stereo... meaning I'll have to get another mic.

I was hoping you could suggest how I should go about it? Do I get another SM57? It seems like SM57's are more built for guitars and drums. I also see those dual condenser mics advertised, though they can be more expensive and I kinda don't wanna feel like I wasted my money on the SM57😂

Hello everyone! This is my list of the "Top 22 Best Audio Plugins" I made a couple of years ago. I'm planning on updating it to 25 this year. What are some fundamental ones that should get included? Also, below is an example of a song which uses stock plugins from Logic Pro exclusively (for contrast): https://open.spotify.com/track/5G6uD7gOb3ynDtjjgEGf9y Hope they are useful to you in any future musical experimentation; All are downloadable in a completely legal way.

Let me know what you think! 😄 Thanks.

Question How do you stay organised and follow a workflow when producing music?

I want to learn how experienced producers approach making a song from start to finish.

When I produce, I sometimes jump between choosing sounds, making drums, arranging, tweaking effects, and other tasks without knowing what I should focus on next.

How do you organise your workflow so you know what to do first, what comes next, and when to move on?

Do you follow a step-by-step process, use checklists or templates, or just work intuitively?

I’d love to hear your actual workflow and any tips for staying focused, avoiding endless tweaking, and finishing songs without feeling overwhelmed by too many options.

Question Music for a series

Hi. I'm a beginner to music production and music as a whole (I've played a very small bit of piano, guitar and bass barely any though, and have made one song on onlinesequencer, basically no music theory though). I however wanna make music for a project of mine, a series with atmospheric ambiance and intense themes. I wanted to know if any of y'all had any advice on getting started (be it free DAWs if possible, techniques to learn, or if it's even worth trying at all) making music for that project?

Question How does publishing a song and getting rights works ? (Sorry for bad english)

Im getting interested in producing music, but i wonder how artist do to get the rights from their songs. I heard a lot about artists who post on spotify and then get their work robbed everywhere. So i dont know what do you need to do to get them and how can you publish a song somewhere else than on soundcloud/spotify, because idk if just posting a song on them would make it a real thing, since its really accessible for everyone or if you need to do some paperworks or idk. Like before streaming, what does posting an album meant if you didnt signed with a label or smth ? I ask all of this to avoid being that kind of artist that is only recognized as a tiktok artist and whose songs will never go on the radio, or get CDs... im sorry if this is really poorly writed.

PS: I also wonder from your experience guys if getting like 1 millions of stream with your songs is like a nearly impossible achievement, or if it is kinda mid/not too hard

Discussion Southeast Asia underground cassette boom?

Has anyone else heard or used the underground cassette craze that's going on in Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia? Apparently there's a huge boom going on right now especially with indie bands in the shoegaze, grunge and Goth genres through about a dozen different labels and distributors in that region. I've heard of American bands doing a split tape with local bands in that region and getting lots of exposure.

Has anyone else used or heard of this pipeline?

Techniques Gear and setup recommendations for someone looking to transition to a “live” electronic music workflow.

I’ve been learning music production in logic for a few years now, and all I’ve ever used is keyboard, mouse, and a 2 octave midi keyboard. The drag and drop, loop and hit play setup is just not sparking much for me creatively any more. I’m constantly getting stuck in “loop hell” and I feel like I need to start working on a more live, musical workflow.

I know that just buying gear is not gonna make me more creative or my songs any better, and I don’t have money to waste on things that I’m not gonna see a huge benefit from. But I have seen videos of people using physical samplers / drum machines and analog synths and it just seems like the way to go. One of my favorite artists, overmono, does a whole “live set” where they seemingly don’t use any traditional DJ equipment and recreate there songs on hardware.

Ideally, I’m looking for some kind of hybrid setup on logic but with some hardware as well. ideas that I’ve had are to maybe get some kind of DDJ (I want to practice live mixing as well) in order to like loop and mix drum breaks or samples with FX, a larger midi keyboard running into logic or some synths, or maybe that MPC sampler drum pad thing. Just looking for recommendations or advice on how people have achieved a similar setup, whether it’s specific hardware or some tips for how to use the DAW in a more musical way.
